AI shopping agents can interpret a request, find and compare products, and—in some services—carry a chosen item through checkout. But there is no single ranking formula shared by all agents, and a recommendation is not the same as an authorized, accepted, and fulfilled order. The agent’s role, the shopper’s approval, and the merchant’s responsibilities depend on the platform and checkout system.

How an AI agent chooses products

A shopping request gives the agent a task and constraints: for example, “best running shoes under $100” or “gifts for a ceramics lover.” The agent can use those details to find relevant products and compare the offers it can access. The examples are from OpenAI’s description of shopping questions; they do not mean every shopping agent searches or ranks products in the same way.

OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping results are organic and unsponsored. Its published description says that when ranking merchants offering the same product, factors can include availability, price, quality, whether the merchant is the primary seller, and whether checkout is supported. OpenAI does not disclose a universal scoring formula, and checkout eligibility does not itself make a product more likely to rank. Those statements describe ChatGPT’s documented experience, not a rule for all AI agents.

What to compare in a recommendation

When reviewing an agent’s shortlist, look at the details that determine whether an offer actually fits the request:

  • Fit to the request: Does the product match the intended use, recipient, and stated preferences?
  • Price and availability: Is the selected variant in stock, and what price and fulfillment costs are shown? Taxes, shipping, or other charges may not be visible until later in checkout.
  • Product and seller: Does the offer identify the correct product and variant, and is the seller the manufacturer, a primary seller, or another merchant?
  • Delivery and checkout: Are delivery options, merchant identity, and the available payment and approval steps clear?

These are useful questions for a person comparing offers, not a published checklist or guaranteed ranking method used by every platform.

Why merchant product data matters

An agent can only present an offer accurately when it can access usable product information. OpenAI’s merchant documentation describes product feeds containing identifiers, descriptions, prices, inventory, media, and fulfillment options. It calls for a sample feed for validation and daily snapshots; required fields support correct price and availability display, while recommended attributes can improve relevance and trust.

Google’s Merchant Center documentation likewise tells merchants to keep product data and brand assets robust and up to date. For Google’s UCP-powered Buy button, the listing must be eligible and carry the specified checkout-eligibility attribute. These are merchant-side requirements described by the respective platforms, not guarantees that every product or retailer will appear in an agent’s results.

What happens when an agent checks out

A purchase involves several separate decisions and systems: the agent presents an offer, the shopper authorizes the transaction, the merchant validates and accepts or declines the order, a payment provider processes payment, and the merchant handles fulfillment. The agent interface may coordinate these steps without becoming the seller or payment processor.

OpenAI’s documented Agentic Commerce Protocol flow

  1. Select and review: ChatGPT displays products. For an item with Instant Checkout, the shopper can select Buy and confirm order, shipping, and payment details.
  2. Send checkout details: ChatGPT creates or updates a checkout session with the merchant through ACP endpoints and shares the information needed for the order.
  3. Merchant decision: The merchant validates the request, determines fulfillment, calculates tax, performs risk checks, and accepts or declines the order on its own systems.
  4. Payment processing: The merchant charges through its payment service provider (PSP). OpenAI’s Delegated Payment Spec describes a one-time payment request with an amount cap and expiry; the PSP returns a token that is passed to the merchant.
  5. Fulfillment and support: The merchant, as merchant of record, handles fulfillment, returns, customer support, and order communications.

OpenAI says users explicitly confirm each step before action, and that only information needed to complete the order is shared with the user’s permission. Its description of payment tokens says they are limited to a particular merchant and amount. Instant Checkout is for approved partners; it is not an automatic capability of every merchant listed in ChatGPT.

Google’s documented UCP checkout flow

Google says eligible product listings in AI Mode in Google Search and Gemini can display a checkout button powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). The seller remains the seller of record even when checkout takes place on a Google surface. Google’s current documentation describes standard funding primary account numbers stored in Google Wallet as the checkout payment method; it says additional payment forms may become available later.

Google describes UCP checkout as a phased rollout. Merchant participation involves meeting early-access requirements, submitting an interest form, completing technical implementation, and configuring listing eligibility. Google also distinguishes UCP checkout from its agentic checkout feature, which buys on a customer’s behalf directly on a merchant website. UCP is intended to standardize programmatic exchanges between agents and merchant backends across a broader range of commerce journeys.

How the commerce protocols differ

These systems address related but different parts of agent-led shopping. A commerce protocol coordinates commerce interactions; a payment authorization approach governs permission to charge; and a transport is a way for systems to communicate. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

System Documented role Important qualification
Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) OpenAI describes ACP as a connection between ChatGPT users and merchants for catalog data and checkout. OpenAI says it developed ACP with Stripe and merchant partners. Instant Checkout is available to approved partners. The merchant’s backend and PSP retain core order and payment responsibilities.
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) Google describes UCP as an open standard for interactions among consumer surfaces, businesses, and payment providers, covering discovery, buying, and post-purchase support. Rollout is phased, and merchant participation and product-listing eligibility conditions apply.
Visa Trusted Agent Protocol Visa describes a protocol for agent identity and trust signals, including agent-specific cryptographic signatures. Visa’s developer documentation says the protocol is in development and deployment and may not be available in all markets.
AP2 and communication transports Google says UCP is compatible with AP2 and supports API, Agent2Agent (A2A), and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration approaches. These are compatibility and communication options; they are not themselves the same thing as a merchant’s checkout or payment authorization.

Google names Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart as UCP development collaborators. It also lists Adyen, American Express, Best Buy, Flipkart, Macy’s, Mastercard, Stripe, The Home Depot, Visa, and Zalando as ecosystem supporters. These are stated collaboration or support relationships, not confirmation that every named retailer offers live agent checkout in every market.

What keeps an agent purchase under the shopper’s control

Authorization is distinct from product selection. OpenAI’s described checkout flow puts the shopper at an explicit confirmation point and limits payment tokens by merchant and amount. Its developer documentation further describes one-time delegated payment requests with a maximum chargeable amount and an expiry. These controls apply to the documented OpenAI flow; approval thresholds and safeguards elsewhere depend on the agent, merchant, and payment setup.

Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol describes three kinds of information that can help a merchant assess an agent-driven request:

  • Agent Intent: A signal that a trusted agent intends to retrieve details about or purchase a specified product.
  • Consumer Recognition: Signals about the customer’s relationship with the merchant.
  • Payment Information: Data that may support the merchant’s preferred checkout method.

Visa says the protocol is built on HTTP Message Signatures and aligned with Web Bot Auth. Separately, Visa’s overview describes programmable payment credentials and rules—for example, which account to use, how to apply installments or rewards, and which risk checks to trigger. It says a shopper may be asked to confirm high-value, unusual, or otherwise sensitive transactions. Those are Visa’s described capabilities and design intent, not a promise that all shopping agents support those controls.

What to check before approving an agent’s order

  • Confirm the exact product, size, color, quantity, and other selected options.
  • Review the merchant name, final order total, shipping destination, delivery option, and any charges shown at checkout.
  • Read the confirmation screen before authorizing payment; check that the amount and seller match what you intend to buy.
  • Keep the order confirmation so you know which merchant to contact about delivery, returns, or support.

The protocols and product documentation describe how these systems are designed to connect agents, merchants, and payment providers. They do not establish a measured adoption rate or prove that one agent finds better products or converts more purchases than another.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
