Advantech positions 5G as one option in a broader industrial IoT (IIoT) stack that includes cellular routers and gateways, wireless modules, remote management and edge computing. The combination can support use cases such as connecting equipment and monitoring it remotely, but it does not guarantee faster or more flexible operations: results depend on the facility’s network, devices and application.
What does 5G change for industrial IoT?
5G adds another wireless connectivity option for industrial systems. It may suit deployments that need to connect equipment without relying entirely on new cabling, but whether it improves an operation depends on the network available at the site and the application’s requirements. Advantech’s portfolio also includes 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS/GNSS and Bluetooth, alongside wireless modules and antennas. Advantech’s Industrial Wireless Solutions describes this range; it does not establish that 5G outperforms the alternatives in a particular factory.
For an industrial deployment, the practical question is not simply whether 5G is newer. It is whether it meets the needed coverage, latency, data capacity and resilience, while fitting the existing operational technology (OT) environment and its budget.
How does Advantech use 5G in IIoT?
Advantech presents 5G as one layer of a connected system rather than a standalone solution. Its industrial networking portfolio includes cellular routers and gateways, while its edge and data-collection offerings address what happens to equipment data after it is gathered. Exact features depend on the selected model and configuration.

Industrial wireless modules, routers and gateways
Advantech describes its 4G/LTE and 5G cellular routers as ruggedized products with features such as VPN, remote device management and customization. These are product-level capabilities, not a guarantee that every model includes the same functions. The company’s industrial networking overview covers the router and gateway portfolio.
The engineering portal’s router and gateway overview also describes an open development environment for selected applications, with Java, Python, C/C++, Node-RED and Docker, and identifies WebAccess/DMP as a remote management platform. Those software options should be checked against the exact product and deployment requirements.

Edge processing and data collection
Connectivity moves data between equipment and other systems; edge computing can process some of that data near the equipment. Advantech says device-level analytics can reduce the amount sent to the cloud. That is the vendor’s description of the architecture, not an independently measured reduction for a specific installation. Its Industrial IoT Solution-Ready Packages page describes edge analytics and related offerings.
Advantech also describes using WISE-PaaS/EdgeLink for data collection, with support for up to 200 PLC protocol conversions and OPC UA processing. The “up to 200” figure concerns protocol conversion support; it is not a measure of 5G speed, network capacity or factory productivity. See the company’s Industrial IoT overview.

Where might an industrial 5G setup be useful?
Advantech’s materials discuss factory automation, equipment manufacturing, smart manufacturing, remote monitoring and equipment management. In those settings, a cellular router or gateway may provide a way to connect equipment, while edge processing can handle selected data locally. Whether this arrangement is preferable to wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G/LTE depends on the site and use case; the cited product pages do not provide comparable performance tests across these options.
How should you decide whether 5G fits a factory?
Evaluate the proposed 5G deployment against the alternatives using the same site requirements. Ask the vendor or integrator for evidence from the actual facility rather than assuming that a technology label predicts the result.

- Coverage: Confirm signal availability in the specific buildings, production areas and equipment locations where devices will operate.
- Latency and data capacity: Define the application’s requirements and validate that the proposed network can meet them in practice.
- Reliability and resilience: Establish what happens during signal loss or network failure, and whether the application needs a wired or other backup path.
- Deployment and operating cost: Compare equipment, network, installation and ongoing operating costs for 5G, Wi-Fi, wired Ethernet and 4G/LTE.
- OT compatibility: Check interfaces, PLC protocols, OPC UA needs and integration with existing equipment and systems.
- Security and management: Confirm the model’s VPN and remote-management capabilities, support arrangements and fit with the site’s security practices.
- Device and carrier fit: Verify the router’s supported bands, carrier compatibility and availability for the country where it will be installed.
Advantech’s materials establish its own product positioning and feature descriptions, not that 5G universally improves speed, flexibility, reliability or cost. Treat those as outcomes to verify during deployment planning and, where appropriate, a site trial.

In its 2018 company publication, MyAdvantech No. 23, Advantech reported a co-creation partnership with China Unicom announced at a November 2018 AIoT forum. The publication said the partners intended to develop IoT solutions for smart manufacturing, utilities and charging applications. This is historical context; it does not establish that the partnership or its terms remain current.

The same publication quoted Xiao-Tien Chen, then identified as China Unicom IoT Executive Director: “Having entered a new era where everything is interconnected, we need an IoT platform that can support numerous sensing devices to realize a faster and smarter IoT.” This is a dated opinion appearing in a company publication, not independent evidence that a particular 5G deployment delivers those outcomes.
MyAdvantech No. 23 also stated in 2018 that future 5G networks would support transmission rates of up to 10 Gbps. That historical forward-looking figure is not a current Advantech product specification or a typical industrial deployment speed.
