Static ADAS camera calibration uses specified targets in a controlled setup while the vehicle is stationary. Dynamic calibration uses a prescribed drive so the camera can use the road scene as a reference. The vehicle maker’s current procedure—not convenience—determines which method is required; some repairs may call for more than one calibration or verification step.
What static camera calibration involves
For static calibration, a technician positions the vehicle in a controlled work area and places one or more specified targets at prescribed heights, distances, and alignments. A scan tool may be used to start the calibration routine and report whether it completed or failed.
The exact setup is vehicle-specific. ASE training material describes an example in which the technician first establishes the vehicle centerline and then positions targets at defined locations. A Tesla service procedure for certain Model S vehicles identifies a camera calibration target as a special tool and provides setup instructions. Neither example supplies universal dimensions or directions for other vehicles.
Depending on the manufacturer’s procedure, factors such as ride height, tire and suspension condition, floor condition, lighting, target type and placement, available space, and scan-tool capability may matter. Follow the applicable procedure for the exact vehicle and repair rather than assuming every factor applies in the same way.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What dynamic camera calibration involves
Dynamic calibration takes place during a prescribed drive. The camera uses the driving scene, including road features specified by the procedure, to establish or refine its reference. A scan tool or other monitoring may be part of the process.
Drive requirements are not universal. A procedure may specify conditions such as speed or road environment, and calibration time can vary with the scene—for example, the availability and quality of road markings. A Tesla drive-cycle procedure for first-generation Autopilot on 2012–2020 Model S vehicles is one limited example, not a template for other models.

Static vs. dynamic ADAS calibration
| Comparison | Static calibration | Dynamic calibration |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | Specified target or targets in a controlled setup | Driving scene and road features used by the procedure |
| Where it occurs | Service bay or other specified stationary setup | Prescribed road test or drive cycle |
| Typical constraints | Target type and placement, vehicle setup, alignment, space, and scan tool | Required speed, route and road conditions, useful visible road features, and any required scan tool or monitoring |
| Who sets the exact method | The current vehicle-specific manufacturer procedure | |
These are comparison points, not a universal checklist. Manufacturers’ detailed methods vary, and I-CAR advises using OEM repair information for required post-repair calibration.
How to determine which calibration a vehicle needs
There is no reliable universal list of repairs that always require static calibration, dynamic calibration, or both. The requirement depends on the vehicle, affected system, repair, diagnostic findings, and manufacturer instructions.

- Identify the exact vehicle: year, make, model, and market.
- Consult current OEM repair information for the specific repair and affected ADAS component.
- Follow the stated calibration, initialization, aiming, and verification steps, including any required scan-tool operations or road test.
- Document the required work and its completion as part of the repair process.
I-CAR’s guidance emphasizes consulting OEM information and following the published procedure. Its calibration-requirements matrix also notes that it is not complete for every US production vehicle, so a matrix entry—or lack of one—should not replace checking the manufacturer’s current instructions.
Why a target board or drive alone is not enough
A physical target is only one part of some static procedures. Correct target compatibility, positioning, vehicle setup, and the required scan-tool routine also matter. Likewise, taking a drive does not by itself establish that dynamic calibration was performed correctly; the prescribed conditions and completion criteria must be met.

Because these procedures require vehicle-specific information and sometimes specialized tools or controlled conditions, do not treat a generic target board or an improvised road drive as a safe substitute for the manufacturer’s process. For an actual repair, use the latest applicable OEM procedure and appropriately equipped, qualified personnel.
