A National Taiwan University research release published October 7, 2026, reports that conventional calculations produced efficiency values almost 30 times too high in some cases compared with simultaneous measurements of electrical power and total heat flow. The discrepancy was not universal, and the release does not provide the case-by-case data needed to quantify it further.
How thermogalvanic cells turn heat into electricity
A thermogalvanic cell, also called a thermocell, uses two electrodes and a water-based electrolyte to convert a temperature difference directly into electricity. It has no moving mechanical parts. These cells are being studied as a way to harvest low-temperature waste heat, which is difficult to use with conventional steam-turbine generation.
The same water that makes a thermocell simple can complicate its efficiency measurement. Temperature differences can set liquid in motion, carrying heat from the hot side toward the cold side. That heat transfer does not necessarily produce corresponding electrical output, so leaving it out can make the cell appear more efficient than it is.
Why conventional efficiency calculations can be misleading
Efficiency compares useful electrical output with heat supplied to the device. If a calculation assumes heat moves through a stationary material, as methods developed for solid-state thermoelectrics often do, it may fail to count heat transported by moving electrolyte. The denominator is then understated and the calculated efficiency inflated.

The National Taiwan University release says conventional calculations agreed with direct measurements in some cases, but in others they reported efficiency almost 30 times too high. This is the reported maximum scale of overestimation, not a correction factor for every thermocell. The release does not provide the specific case data behind that figure.
What the direct-measurement approach changes
The researchers report measuring actual electrical power and total heat flux at the same time while a thermocell operated. Measuring both during operation addresses the central accounting problem: heat carried by fluid circulation is included alongside heat transferred through the cell in other ways. The release presents this as a more realistic assessment of total device performance than estimating heat flow with a stationary-material model.

The release identifies Energy Conversion and Management as the journal for the study and links to the article, but the publisher page was not accessible in the material available for this report. Its detailed methods and supporting data therefore cannot be independently checked here. Specific measurement results should be understood as findings reported in the institutional release, not independently audited values.
Does tilting a thermocell improve efficiency?
In the tested cell configuration, the release reports that an incline of 60 degrees relative to gravity gave the best result. The orientation suppressed large-scale liquid circulation while still allowing enough movement to transport chemical species needed for continued electricity generation. The researchers say this raised directly measured Carnot-relative efficiency without adding materials, membranes, or more complex cell structures.

That result also shows why design choices need to be judged with total heat flow in view: increasing the distance between electrodes looked beneficial under conventional calculations, but direct measurements showed the opposite trend. Neither finding establishes a universal design rule. The release does not give enough methodological detail to show that 60 degrees, or the electrode-spacing result, applies to other cell designs or operating conditions.

- Keep claims design-specific: The release reports a promising orientation for the tested configuration, not a commercially proven performance level or a universal optimum.
The release describes thermocells as a possible route for using low-temperature waste heat and mentions potential small-electronics applications. It does not establish market size, deployed capacity, or commercial performance. The study’s contribution, as described, is a measurement method and evidence that accounting for liquid-driven heat transport can change which designs appear effective.
