Google Maps accessibility information is useful as a starting point, but it is not a guarantee that a venue will meet your needs. The sources available do not establish a validated accuracy rate for its accessibility labels. Check the specific features you need, and confirm trip-critical details with the venue.

What Google Maps’ accessibility labels tell you

Google’s wheelchair-accessibility attributes describe particular features at a place: its entrance, restroom, seating, parking, and elevator. They are not a single, universal rating of whether a venue is accessible to every disabled person.

Google’s guidance gives practical criteria for these attributes. For example, an entrance should be about three feet (one metre) wide and have no steps, unless a permanent or movable ramp is available. Restroom and relevant stall entrances should be at least one metre wide. Seating should be reachable without stairs, with room to navigate to and sit at a table. Parking refers to a reserved space, and a multi-floor venue needs an elevator large enough for a wheelchair. See Google’s guidance on wheelchair-accessible places and its Business Profile accessibility attributes.

A marked entrance, for instance, does not tell you whether the restroom is accessible, whether the route from the parking space is usable, or whether the space suits your particular mobility device. Important details can include slopes, surface conditions, steps, wayfinding, and whether access is available at the time you visit. The National Centre for Accessible Transport (NCAT) identifies these as areas where people need more detailed information in its January 2025 report.

How accurate is the information?

There is no independently verified accuracy percentage in the sources reviewed for Google Maps’ place accessibility attributes. The available evidence does not establish how often an individual entrance, restroom, seating, parking, or elevator label is correct, nor does it provide a representative error rate by country or type of business.

Google says Maps information comes from user contributions, business updates, authoritative sources, and imagery. Its Maps content transparency report says user-submitted edits are assessed automatically and edits from business owners are prioritized. That explains Google’s stated process; it does not verify a particular accessibility label.

What the 2025 survey does—and does not—show

NCAT’s January 2025 highlights report says it surveyed more than 1,200 disabled people and reviewed more than 30 apps and websites, including Google Maps, Apple Maps, and local-authority apps. It reports that 66% of respondents trusted Google Maps most for journey planning. Among respondents who voted Google Maps least helpful, 31% found its data inaccessible or incorrect. These are findings about trust and perceived usefulness—not an audit of Google Maps’ accessibility labels. The report also notes that its survey demographics may skew toward people with mobility impairments.

The scale of contributions should not be mistaken for proof of accuracy. Google’s 2020 launch announcement reported accessibility information for more than 15 million places and more than 500 million accessibility updates at that time; those are historical figures, not current totals or accuracy results. Google separately reported 80 million place edits published in 2025, but that figure covers Maps place edits overall, not accessibility-specific updates. See Google’s 2020 announcement and the 2025 content transparency report.

How to check a listing and report a problem

  1. Open the place listing in Google Maps. Review the individual wheelchair-accessible entrance, restroom, seating, parking, and elevator details rather than relying only on a summary icon.
  2. Check the details that matter to your visit. Consider the specific entrance, route through the venue, facility, or seating arrangement you need. A missing attribute is not proof that a feature is unavailable, just as a positive attribute is not a guarantee for every visitor.
  3. Confirm essential details with the venue. If a feature is necessary for the trip, ask the business about that particular feature and any conditions that could affect access on your visit.
  4. Suggest a correction in Maps. Google says users can flag a missing or incorrect attribute through its Maps editing options, or share accessibility details in a review. Business owners can manage attributes through their Business Profile. See Google’s instructions for wheelchair-accessible places.

Place labels are not wheelchair-route guarantees

Accessibility information about a business and directions for a wheelchair-accessible journey are different kinds of data. A University College London-hosted workshop paper reproduces the route warning, “Use caution—wheelchair-accessible directions may not always reflect real-world conditions.” That caution concerns route directions, not the accuracy rate of a business’s place attributes. The paper also discusses the trade-offs involved in collecting accessibility data, including accuracy, speed, geographic coverage, completeness, and cost. Read the workshop paper.

Availability and alternatives

Google’s support documentation says wheelchair-accessible places are available only in certain countries, but the sources here do not establish a complete current country list. Google’s 2020 announcement described an initial rollout in Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States; that historical list should not be treated as the full list of countries where the feature is available today.

Wheelmap is another place directory to consider, not a proven more accurate substitute. Its FAQ says it is based largely on OpenStreetMap, accepts community ratings and photos, and displays data from partners under varying licenses. Its Wheelmap Pro page describes an organizational mapping product with custom branding, selectable accessibility criteria, and organization-controlled data collection. Comparing directories requires looking at local coverage, the features recorded, update recency, contributor and correction processes, and whether data covers places, routes, or real-time conditions. The information cited here does not show that Wheelmap entries are more accurate than Google Maps listings.
