A media merger can change who owns studios, shows, film libraries, TV networks and streaming services. That may affect where a title is available, whether it is exclusive, what gets made and how films are released—but a change in ownership does not automatically move a show or reduce your choices. The effect depends on the deal, existing licensing contracts, the companies’ incentives and the alternatives available to viewers and competitors.
How could a media merger affect what you can watch?
The new owner may license a title to its own service, sell access to rival platforms, or reserve it for an exclusive window. A merger can also change how services are bundled and promoted, which projects receive funding, and whether a film gets a theatrical release before streaming. These are possible routes from a deal to your viewing options, not guaranteed outcomes.
Where a title is available
Streaming and distribution contracts usually govern access for particular terms and rights. A merger does not, by itself, cancel those agreements. When a license expires, the owner may renew it, license the title elsewhere or make it exclusive to a service it owns. An exclusive window can make a title easier to find in one place while it is unavailable on other services for that period.

Which films and shows get made
A combined company may reassess projects, budgets, release plans or the amount of content it produces. It may also have more resources to compete for audiences. Whether a deal leads to more or fewer new movies and shows depends on evidence about the particular companies and their plans, not simply on the fact that they merged.

Competition among services and creators
A studio’s titles can help a rival streaming service attract subscribers. If a merged owner could restrict rivals’ access to important content, regulators may examine whether that would make it harder for those services to compete. A merger may also change the number of companies competing to buy projects or creators’ work. The U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission’s 2023 Merger Guidelines include competition among buyers of labor and other inputs in their framework.
Will your shows move to another streaming service?
Possibly, but not necessarily—and not necessarily right away. A title might remain on its current service under an existing license, move when that agreement ends, appear on multiple services, or become exclusive to a service owned by the new company. The deal’s terms and the title’s individual distribution agreements matter more than a general assumption that a merged company will pull everything into one catalog.

When evaluating a specific show, check its listing on the services you use and look for announced licensing or release changes. A merger announcement alone is not proof that a title has moved or will move.
What the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery proposal shows
The example here is the proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance. On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) said it had completed its investigation and concluded that the proposal was not likely to harm competition or American consumers in subscription streaming, linear television, or studio development, production and theatrical film distribution. That was DOJ’s assessment of this specific proposal, not a guarantee about future prices, catalogs or release decisions. Read DOJ’s June 12, 2026 statement.

- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
DOJ said it considered whether the combined company would keep content exclusive to its own services and viewed that outcome as unlikely in this case, citing the parties’ historical licensing practices. It also described competition from established streaming services, other studios, independent producers and newer theatrical entrants. Those findings should not be treated as predictions for a different transaction.
The statement says DOJ’s eight-month investigation received over two million documents from over 80 custodians. That describes the investigation’s scale; it does not measure an effect on viewers.

A later federal filing dated September 15, 2026, describes state plaintiffs’ suit, filed in July, seeking to block the transaction. The filing documents litigation, not its outcome. The sources cited here do not establish whether the proposal subsequently closed or was blocked; deal and court status can change, so check for later orders and announcements before relying on its status. What regulators look at in a media merger
The DOJ and FTC’s 2023 Merger Guidelines are non-binding guidance for assessing whether a merger may violate antitrust laws. Agencies apply the law and facts of each case; the guidelines do not determine the result of every deal. Read the 2023 Merger Guidelines overview.

- Overlap and alternatives: Which studios, libraries, streaming services, networks or distribution operations compete with one another, and what meaningful alternatives would remain?
- Access for rivals: Could the combined company restrict access to content, services or distribution that rival services need to compete? Guideline 5 identifies this as a question agencies may evaluate; it does not mean every merger creates such a risk. Read Guideline 5.
- Production and release: Is there evidence that the deal could change project volume, investment, studio development or theatrical releases?
- Effects on creators and other suppliers: Would fewer competing buyers affect creators’ options for selling work, or workers’ options for employment?
- Price and choice: Is there deal-specific evidence about subscription costs, bundles or title availability? A general claim that a merger will raise prices or shrink catalogs is not established without that evidence.
Regulators may examine streaming, linear television and film production or distribution as distinct areas or in relation to one another, depending on the facts. Historical context can help explain why distribution matters: DOJ’s account of the Paramount Decrees describes an earlier case involving studio control of distribution and exhibition, and notes that viewing options later expanded to broadcast, cable, DVD and internet streaming. That history does not establish the rules or likely outcome for a modern merger. Read DOJ’s history of the Paramount Decrees.
Quick Recap
How to assess a particular deal as a viewer
- Check the legal status. Distinguish an announced proposal from an approved or completed deal, and look for outstanding lawsuits or court orders.
- Identify what overlaps. Find out whether the companies own competing studios, libraries, streaming services or distribution channels.
- Look for licensing and release plans. Check whether the companies have announced changes to title availability, exclusivity, bundles, production or theatrical releases. An announcement is more informative than speculation, but plans can change.
- Separate possibilities from proven effects. Ask whether there is evidence of a change to prices, titles or new productions, rather than assuming one follows from the merger itself.
