It lets you handle quick tasks without opening the device; the exact features depend on the model and its software. The operating system can also respond when the phone is partly or fully opened, allowing supported apps to adjust their layout or move between displays.
What is a foldable phone’s cover screen?
On a clamshell foldable, the cover screen is the smaller display on the outside when the phone is folded, while the larger flexible display is protected inside. On a book-style foldable, the cover display is the front-facing screen you can use with the device closed; opening it reveals a larger inner display. Samsung’s guide describes using its foldables in open and closed states, and its Galaxy Z Flip6 specification sheet lists the FlexWindow separately from the main display.
The name describes where the screen is and when you use it, not a universal panel design. Cover displays can differ by device; the available documentation does not establish that all foldables use identical display hardware.
How does it work?
When the phone is folded, its software presents an interface designed for the outer display. The phone’s state also matters: a foldable can be closed, open, or partly folded, and supported software can respond to those different postures. Samsung’s developer documentation explains how apps can use device-state and display information to adapt; it describes Flex mode for partly folded devices, rather than the ordinary closed-phone cover-screen view. There is no single set of controls or app behavior shared by every foldable. What appears on the outer screen depends on the phone, its software, and whether an app supports that display.
What can you do on the cover screen?
Capabilities vary, so treat features as model-specific rather than standard across all foldables. For example, Samsung documents these functions for the Galaxy Z Flip6’s FlexWindow:

- Check notifications and use widgets for glanceable information.
- Open selected apps, including Samsung Wallet, and access Bixby.
- Launch the camera and choose camera modes while viewing the preview on the outer display.
- Receive and answer calls. Samsung says answering on the cover screen uses speakerphone when no headset or Bluetooth audio device is connected.
- Reply to some messages, including with suggested replies described in Samsung’s guide.
These are documented Galaxy Z Flip6 examples, not a promise that another model offers the same controls. Samsung’s FlexWindow guide explains its supported functions and settings. Motorola’s Razr 2025 documentation is another example of an external display that can be configured to run apps and respond as the phone is folded or opened: Motorola Razr external-display guide.
Can apps continue when you fold or unfold the phone?
Some can, but support is selective. Samsung says App Continuity works with select apps, and Motorola documents continuing an app on the external display when folding. Whether a particular app can run on the cover screen, preserve its place, or present useful controls depends on the device, app, and software release. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model rather than assuming any app will transfer seamlessly. How is Flex mode different from the cover screen?
Flex mode refers to using a supported foldable while it is partly open, often resting at an angle. A compatible app may use that posture to arrange content and controls differently or make hands-free viewing more convenient. This is separate from using the outer cover display while the phone is fully folded. The precise layout and app support vary by device and app. Samsung explains the distinction through its developer guide to Flex mode and support guide to Flex mode and foldable apps.

- Screen size and shape: Consider how much information fits and whether the interface has to accommodate camera hardware or screen contours.
- Available tasks: Look for the actions you actually need, such as notifications, calls, replies, camera controls, wallet access, or media controls.
- App support: Find out which apps can run on the cover screen and whether they need a separate setting or feature.
- Continuity: Check whether supported apps can move between outer and inner displays, and which apps are included.
- Partly folded behavior: Check whether the phone offers useful app layouts when partly open, distinct from its closed cover-screen features.
For a concrete size example, Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Flip6’s cover display as 3.4 inches and Super AMOLED in its specification sheet. That figure describes this model only; it is not a general measure of foldable cover screens.
