I started publishing on DEV for a practical reason: I needed something to link from the About Me slide in a conference talk. I wasn’t planning to build a personal blog. One year later, my posts had become part of how I shared my work, joined conversations with other developers, and found new speaking opportunities.
Why I started writing on DEV
In summer 2025, after a difficult period in my personal life and an injury that ended my judo routine, I was trying to make room for new activities. A friend’s LinkedIn post reminded me that I had wanted to speak at JS Poland for a long time, so I submitted a proposal.
The organizer asked me for a recording of a previous talk. I had one recording, sent it, and—by my recollection—received an invitation about half an hour later. I wanted a place to point people to from the talk’s About Me slide, but I did not feel like building a blog of my own. As I put it, “I don’t feel like building my own blog, though, so I decided to use an existing blogging platform.” I chose DEV in part because I liked its layout and had found articles there interesting and approachable.

What happened after the first post
Experimenting before I had a strategy
I initially expected to publish about once a week, and less often if I lost interest. Instead, I started writing more frequently to see what readers responded to. That early stretch was messy: I tried different subjects and began series I did not finish. I did not have a detailed content plan, and I do not think a new writer needs one before starting.
Letting the purpose evolve
The blog gradually became useful for more than a slide. I began pointing to my writing as evidence of activity in the developer community when submitting conference proposals. Later, organizers found my DEV articles and invited me to speak about the topics I had written on. In my experience, that helped both sides: organizers could see the subject matter, and I knew what talk they wanted.

- Presenter mode, built-in Class 2 red laser pointer for presentations, intuitive touch-keys for easy slideshow control. AAA batteries required (best with Polaroid AAA batteries)
- Bright red laser light - Easy to see against most backgrounds, works as a pointer clicker for presentation and clicker for powerpoint presentations
- Up to 50-foot wireless range for freedom to move around the room
- There's no software to install. Just plug the receiver into a USB port to begin. This power point clicker wireless solution makes presentations easy, and you can store the receiver in the presentation remote after use.
- 2.4GHz RF wireless technology, built-in docking bay stores receiver for easy pack up and portability; works well as a presenter clicker wireless or computer clicker for presentations.
That is what happened in my case, not a guaranteed route from publishing to speaking. A post can make your interests and experience easier to find, but it cannot promise an invitation.
How I think about readers, topics, and credibility
I try to balance subjects I genuinely want to explore with what readers may find useful. Some technical, expert-level posts will naturally reach fewer people than broadly appealing or provocative pieces. I do not expect every article to go viral, and I do not treat popularity as the only measure of whether a post was worthwhile.

When writers make claims about senior developers or technical expertise, I believe they should establish credibility through real experience and work. A confident tone by itself is not evidence.
Why community matters alongside publishing
Writing is only one part of participating. I try to reply to substantive comments when I can, and some discussions beneath my posts have been more interesting than the posts themselves. If I could advise my first-week self, I would say to spend time reading other people’s posts and interacting with the community, not only publishing my own.

What one year on DEV looked like
In my anniversary reflection, published September 29, 2026, I reported that my articles had reached 380,000 reads. That number is the figure presented in the article; it has no independently provided audit or methodology. My next-year goal is to publish roughly one post a week. I have considered YouTube as another way to share ideas, but I have not decided whether to pursue it.

What to take from my path if you are starting
- Begin with a small, concrete reason to publish. A useful link for a talk or portfolio can be enough.
- Choose an existing platform if getting started matters more to you than building and maintaining a site of your own. A personal blog may make sense if you want more control over the site and its infrastructure; my choice was shaped by not wanting to build one and by liking DEV’s layout.
- Let early posts teach you what you want to write. You can experiment with subjects before settling into a consistent approach.
- Think about readers without making every post chase reach. Interest, usefulness, and audience size do not always align.
- Make time for the community around your writing: read, respond, and take part in discussions.
My story began with a conference-slide link, not a grand plan to become a blogger. Publishing became more valuable as I kept writing and participating, but the opportunities that followed were specific to my experience.
