A yes–no oracle can be built as a small browser-side toy with vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: it turns a typed question and the moment you click into a YES or NO, then keeps a short history in the browser. But “100% private” is stronger than the available evidence supports. BenDen’s April 2, 2026 HackerNoon article describes the design, yet its sample also loads Tailwind from a CDN, which ordinarily requires an external network request. The code is a playful response generator—not a reliable way to make important decisions.

What the oracle does

BenDen’s April 2, 2026 HackerNoon article describes a browser-based yes–no oracle made with vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A user enters a question such as “Will I get that promotion?” or “Should I order sushi or pizza?” The page returns YES or NO and adds the consultation to a recent-history list.

The intended appeal is simplicity: the described response logic runs in the page rather than relying on a server-side decision service, and the sample keeps its history in browser localStorage. That is a description of the implementation in the article, not an independent audit of a live deployment or proof about every way the page or its dependencies handle data.

How the answer is generated

  1. Normalize the input. The sample trims whitespace from the question and converts it to lowercase.
  2. Build a simple hash. It processes the question’s characters with a basic integer-hash routine.
  3. Mix in click timing. It adds performance.now(), then uses a sine-based function to produce a pseudo-random-looking value.
  4. Choose a response. Values above 0.5 yield YES; other values yield NO.

Because the timing is part of the input to the calculation, asking the same wording again does not necessarily produce the same response. The author describes both wording and timing as affecting repeat questions. This custom construction is a toy mechanism, not a prediction engine, a cryptographic random-number generator, or a measure of what answer is best.

What “private” means here—and what it does not establish

The article’s sample prepends each question, answer, and locally formatted time to a history stored in localStorage, then limits the list to the latest 15 entries. This design keeps that history in the browser’s local storage rather than describing a remote history service. It does not, by itself, prove the privacy characteristics of a deployed page or of any third-party code loaded alongside it.

There is a specific mismatch in the article’s evidence: its sample HTML loads Tailwind using https://cdn.tailwindcss.com. In an ordinary browser load, fetching that external script entails a network request to the CDN. So the sample and the literal claim of “zero network requests” do not align unless the dependency is removed, self-hosted, or not present in the deployed implementation. The live deployment was not audited, so it is not established that it makes zero requests.

A page can avoid sending the question to a backend and still contact an external service to fetch a script or other asset. To make a no-external-request claim about a particular copy, inspect its actual deployed resources and browser network activity; the article’s example alone is not enough to establish that claim.

Is this cryptographically random?

No. The described code uses a question hash, click timing, and a sine-based function; it does not use Web Crypto. Those ingredients are enough for a lighthearted binary toy, but they should not be described as cryptographically secure or as providing a dependable random process.

If a project needs cryptographically strong random values in a browser, MDN documents crypto.getRandomValues() for that purpose. The W3C Web Cryptography API specification likewise describes the method as generating cryptographically strong random values, while noting that the specification sets no lower bound on information-theoretic entropy and that implementations should make a best effort to provide as much entropy as practicable. Using that API would change how a random value is generated; it would not make a yes–no answer meaningful or turn the oracle into sound decision advice.

What it is—and is not—useful for

The oracle fits low-stakes play: it can add a bit of randomness to an inconsequential choice or demonstrate basic browser JavaScript and local storage. It should not decide whether to take a job, make a financial trade, or act on a relationship concern. A binary answer generated from a hash and click timing has no access to the facts, priorities, or consequences needed to advise on those questions.

What to check when adapting the idea

  • Repeat behavior: Decide whether identical questions should yield a stable answer or whether variation is part of the toy’s appeal.
  • Answer generation: Keep a simple custom function clearly labeled as playful; use crypto.getRandomValues() if cryptographically strong random values are actually required.
  • Local retention: Tell users what the page saves, where it saves it, and how they can clear it. The sample’s history is capped at 15 entries.
  • External dependencies: Check for CDN scripts, fonts, analytics, or other remote resources before claiming that a page makes no external requests.
  • Decision stakes: Keep the output separate from advice, especially when a choice has financial, employment, health, or personal consequences.
