A study of the original Bloons Tower Defense found that integer programming can turn tower placement and spending into a sequence of constrained decisions. Its multi-round plans finished two simulated scenarios with more lives than the study’s greedy plans—but the result is a demonstration on a simplified game model, not proof that the same methods will optimize real-world defenses.

Why tower placement becomes a resource-allocation problem

In Bloons Tower Defense, players place monkey towers to stop balloons moving along a track. Each tower costs money, covers a particular area, and occupies space. Towers cannot overlap, and placement is restricted near the track. Meanwhile, later rounds bring harder challenges, so spending money or using a good location now can limit what is possible later.

The problem therefore involves more than choosing the strongest tower for the next wave. The player must manage a budget, fit irregular tower footprints into a two-dimensional map, and preserve a workable configuration over successive rounds. The game makes these constraints visible: money, available space, coverage, and future needs all compete.

How the researchers modeled the game

Delorme and Malinowski describe winning as a temporal two-dimensional knapsack problem with irregular shapes and side constraints. A knapsack problem selects valuable items without exceeding a capacity or budget. Here, the two-dimensional placement and non-overlap rules represent the map, while the temporal element represents how a tower configuration must remain compatible with choices made across rounds.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The researchers developed two integer-programming approaches using a dotted-board model of the map. Both seek configurations that can stop balloons, but they plan over different horizons.

Approach How it plans Trade-off
Greedy framework Chooses a configuration one round at a time, keeping it compatible with the preceding configuration. Focuses on a strong next-round decision rather than jointly optimizing a longer sequence.
Multi-round framework Optimizes configurations over several rounds together. Can account for how current placements affect later rounds, but the more flexible computations are harder.

This distinction captures the central planning issue: a placement that works now can consume money or map space needed to meet a later challenge. Looking ahead can make those consequences part of the decision instead of treating each round mostly on its own.

What the simulated results show

The paper reports that its generated plans could win the modeled game and that some outperformed the human strategies used for comparison. Those baselines were plans derived from online wiki advice; the authors caution that they were not devised by Bloons experts.

In two reported comparisons, multi-round planning ended the simulated game with more lives than its greedy counterpart:

Plan comparison Lives remaining at the end of round 50
MD1 multi-round versus greedy 31 versus 24
MD2 multi-round versus greedy 25 versus 13

These are specific outcomes from the authors’ simulated scenarios, not typical results for players or a general guarantee that multi-round optimization always wins. The modeled game began with 40 lives and ran for 50 rounds.

The more flexible MD2 multi-round computations also took more effort: later-round solutions were not all certified optimal within the time limits, although the reported optimality gaps were below 8%. That qualification matters. The results show useful plans found under the study’s setup, not a proof of a globally optimal solution for every scenario.

What the study does—and does not—say about real-world decisions

The same broad mathematical ideas may help frame placement problems involving facilities, aircraft, or anti-drone detection systems: choose locations and coverage while respecting limits and considering how decisions interact. Maxence Delorme put the analogy this way in a Phys.org report provided by Tilburg University on October 5, 2026: “Whether you’re placing towers in Bloons or deploying aircraft to protect an area, mathematics helps you find the location where they will have the greatest impact.”

The analogy is about methods, not validated deployments. The game has explicit rounds and evolving budgets; real-world threats may not be known in advance, and real systems may not share the game’s constraints. The study illustrates how optimization can organize a constrained placement problem, but it does not test or prove the effectiveness of a real airport-defense or facility-placement plan.

Important limits of the game model

The experiments used the original 2007 Flash game, not Bloons TD 6. The model covered one map and 50 rounds, and its experimental version included only dart and super monkey towers. It also disallowed selling towers and building during a round.

  • Some details unavailable in the game were estimated from measurements.
  • The authors note that simulator behavior may differ from the original game.
  • The human comparisons were approximate implementations of wiki advice, not strategies created by expert players.

Those boundaries make the outcomes useful as an operations-research example, while limiting how broadly they should be generalized to the full game or to other settings.

Paper and reproducibility details

The paper by Delorme and Malinowski was first published in International Transactions in Operational Research on July 23, 2026. It states that the simulator source code is public and links to the simulator repository and optimization algorithms. The reported setup used Python for simulations, C++ for optimization, Gurobi 11.0.2, and a single-core virtual machine with an AMD EPYC-Rome 2.00 GHz processor and 64 GB of RAM.
