A BLDC motor can make a beachball hover by spinning an impeller that drives an upward air jet. The jet pushes on the ball until its aerodynamic force balances its weight; if the ball drifts sideways, uneven airflow can push it back toward the center. The motor sets the airflow, while a nozzle, suitable controller and careful setup help make the demonstration stable.

How the blower holds the ball up

The impeller accelerates air upward. When that moving air strikes the beachball, the jet transfers momentum to the sphere and creates aerodynamic drag in the upward direction. The ball settles at a height where the upward force is approximately equal to its weight: Fup ≈ mg.

This is a balance, not a suction effect that lifts the ball indefinitely. A free jet spreads as it rises and loses speed, so the upward force available to support the ball generally decreases with height. If the force is too great, the ball rises into slower air; if it is too small, the ball drops into faster air. The ball tends toward an equilibrium height.

Harvard Natural Sciences Lecture Demonstrations describes its setup as fast-flowing air creating a low-pressure zone that holds a beachball aloft. The more complete practical picture is that jet momentum and drag support the ball, while pressure and flow differences also matter, especially for keeping it centered.

Why it stays near the center of the jet

The jet is fastest near its center and slower toward its edges. When the ball shifts off-axis, the airflow around its two sides is no longer balanced. The faster-flowing side has lower pressure, and the resulting pressure and flow imbalance can create a restoring force toward the jet axis.

MIT Kraków describes its exhibit as a fan producing an upward force and explains the return toward center in terms of faster airflow on one side and a restoring force. Its explanation invokes Bernoulli and jet attachment; in a practical build, the exact stability depends on the jet, ball, and outlet geometry. The centering effect is not a guarantee that any fan will hold any beachball securely.

  • Multi-Voltage & Versatile Use: 12-36V operation (12/24/36V rated), 61KV (610RPM@12V, 1100RPM@24V). This bldc motor with encoder is suitable for robots, AGVs, medical devices, etc.
  • High-Adaptability Design: Works with mainstream FOC libraries; unified encoder ports/mounts for custom setups. 24-slot 22-pole stator + delta winding balances torque density and control precision.

What blower and parts to choose

Choose a blower by its airflow and pressure at the operating point, not by RPM alone. The ball’s mass and diameter, inflation, outlet size, nozzle shape, and distance above the outlet all affect the airflow needed. A manufacturer’s open-airflow and closed-pressure ratings describe different endpoints, not necessarily the performance where your ball will hover.

Part or factor What to look for
Blower A centrifugal BLDC blower or comparable fan with enough airflow and pressure for the intended ball and duct. Check operating-point performance where available.
Controller A controller compatible with the specific BLDC motor and its speed-control input. Some blowers require a dedicated controller; PWM speed regulation is listed for the example below.
Power supply A DC supply matched to the blower and controller ratings. Do not infer the required supply current from voltage or airflow alone.
Nozzle or tube A short duct or nozzle that directs and collimates the jet. Its dimensions affect the flow and therefore the ball’s stability and height.
Guarding A cage or guard that keeps hands and loose objects away from the impeller.
Optional feedback A proximity or position sensor to measure ball height for automatic control.

Example: OWB4235-24 manufacturer listing

The listed OWB4235-24 is a 24 V DC, three-phase BLDC blower with 48 m³/h open airflow, 7.0 kPa closed pressure, and 24,000 RPM open speed. The manufacturer listing also specifies PWM speed regulation, a controller requirement, 80 dBA noise, and IP54 protection. These are listing specifications, not a guarantee that the blower will levitate every beachball; the airflow and pressure figures refer to open and closed conditions rather than a stated beachball operating point. The listing does not establish a universal speed setting or a complete power-supply current requirement for this project.

DC 7.4V/11.1V 12V Mini BLDC Brushless Motor with Drive 200W Ultra-high Power Speed Aluminum Alloy Impeller Turbo Ducted Fan DIY(7.4V)
  • 1. Superior Efficiency & Longer Runtime
  • Operates with significantly less energy loss compared to brushed motors, converting more power into motion and extending battery life in portable applications.
  • 2. Enhanced Durability & Low Maintenance
  • No physical brushes to wear out or replace. This eliminates sparking, reduces friction, and ensures a longer operational lifespan with minimal maintenance required.
  • 3. High Performance with Precision Control

For context, Harvard Natural Sciences Lecture Demonstrations lists a 1/4 hp, 3400 RPM blower for its beachball demonstration, alongside a collimating nozzle and safety cage. That is a separate demonstration specification, not a direct comparison with the OWB4235-24 or a requirement that a BLDC build use the same rating.

Build and tune the levitation setup

  1. Assemble the air path: Mount the blower securely and connect a short tube or nozzle that points the jet upward. Keep the ball clear of both the outlet and the impeller.
  2. Add protection: Fit a guard or cage around the impeller before powering the system. Secure the blower and duct so vibration or airflow cannot shift them.
  3. Connect compatible electronics: Use the motor’s matched BLDC controller and a correctly rated DC supply. Follow the blower and controller requirements for wiring and speed input.
  4. Start at low speed: Use the controller’s PWM or other specified speed command to begin with low airflow. Increase it gradually while observing the ball’s movement.
  5. Tune with a light ball first: A smaller, lighter test ball makes it easier to find a stable jet before trying a full-size beachball. Adjust speed and, if needed, nozzle position or geometry in small increments.
  6. Set a target height if needed: For a manual demonstration, adjust blower speed until the ball settles where desired. For automatic height control, measure the ball position and adjust blower speed around the target.

A fixed PWM setting is open-loop control: the blower receives a command, but the system does not correct for changes in ball position or disturbances. Closed-loop control uses a position sensor to compare actual height with a target and alter blower speed. The 2019 IFAC paper Building of the Fan Driven Ball Levitation System describes a fan-at-the-bottom-of-a-tube arrangement and discusses fan selection and a proximity sensor. UNED’s Air-Levitator documentation includes a light ball, tube, fan, servo disturbance flap, position sensor, and air-speed sensor. A 2009 IEEE Transactions on Education laboratory describes controlling beachball height by changing blower voltage and modeling electrical, mechanical, and aerodynamic effects. These sources establish workable system architectures, but not one universal power setting for every build.

What affects the hover height and stability

  • Ball mass and size: A heavier ball needs more upward aerodynamic force. Diameter and shape affect how the jet interacts with it.
  • Inflation and leakage: The ball’s shape and condition affect its mass and response to the flow.
  • Jet speed and spread: The airflow changes with height and distance from the outlet; a nozzle or tube can shape the jet but does not make every setup identical.
  • Control response: Manual adjustment can hold a demonstration at a chosen equilibrium, while sensor feedback can correct height errors automatically.

Safety and practical limits

Keep the ball from contacting the impeller or blocking the outlet, and guard the rotating assembly. A blower’s published protection rating does not replace a physical impeller guard. Check the motor, controller, and supply ratings as a matched system, and account for heat, noise, and secure mounting. A listed 80 dBA figure for the OWB4235-24 is a manufacturer specification; actual noise in an assembled setup can vary with mounting, ducting, and operating conditions.
