Choose a horror game by matching its kind of fear to what you want to experience, then check the main-story time and the exact platform edition before you buy. Ratings can flag disturbing content, but they are not a scale of scariness; a Teen-rated game may still include unsettling imagery. The right pick depends less on which game is “scariest” than on whether you want eerie pursuit, helpless psychological tension, graphic survival horror, or cinematic decisions.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Little Nightmares III | Eerie puzzle pursuit | Solo with an AI companion or online co-op; Teen rating with Blood and Gore and Violence descriptors | PlayStation 5/4, Xbox Series/One, Switch, PC; ESRB listing also includes Switch 2 | Nov 2026 |
| SOMA | Psychological, helpless science-fiction horror | Threatening creatures; no fighting back; Deku Deals displays a 9-hour main-story estimate from HowLongToBeat | PC, PS4 (playable on PS5); separate Switch/Switch 2 ESRB listing | Nov 2026 |
| Resident Evil 7 biohazard | Graphic first-person survival horror | ESRB Mature 17+; realistic combat effects, dismemberment and mutilated corpses | Not stated in the cited ESRB entry | Nov 2026 |
| The Quarry | Cinematic, choice-driven horror | Branching decisions, adjustable gameplay difficulty, Movie Mode; online decision-making for up to seven friends | PS4, PS5, Xbox console generations, PC | Nov 2026 |
The platform and content details in this table come from the linked official listings and rating entries; editions and features can differ by platform. The game categories describe horror styles, not an objective ranking from mild to terrifying.
How should I judge how scary a horror game is?
Judge the specific fear it creates, not just its rating: pursuit, combat, disturbing imagery, and psychological helplessness can affect people differently. A rating is useful for screening content, but it cannot tell you whether a game will feel manageable to you.
The ESRB explains that “Rating Categories suggest age appropriateness.” Its categories are not scariness scores, and content descriptors flag notable material rather than promise a complete inventory of every unsettling moment. Check the title’s rating summary when particular images or themes matter to you, and treat it as guidance rather than a guarantee that other content is absent. See the ESRB Ratings Guide.

Start with the kind of fear you want
- Pursuit and vulnerability: You are trying to escape or solve problems while danger presses in, rather than relying on combat to control the situation.
- Psychological unease: Tension comes from the setting, story, and threats. This can be deeply distressing even when fighting is not the focus.
- Combat and graphic injury: Weapons, realistic combat effects, blood, dismemberment, or mutilated bodies may be central to the experience.
- Cinematic suspense: Choices and branching events drive the horror, so your decisions may shape what happens in a playthrough.
These are decision categories, not a universal ladder of intensity. A player who dislikes helplessness may find a pursuit game harder to tolerate than a game with more combat; someone else may have the opposite reaction.
Use descriptors as screening clues
Little Nightmares III is rated Teen and has Blood and Gore and Violence descriptors. The ESRB summary mentions escape sequences, bloodstained settings, and disturbing bodily imagery, so Teen should not be read as a promise of a gentle or non-disturbing experience. Read its ESRB rating entry.
At the other end of the content spectrum, the ESRB assigns Resident Evil 7 biohazard Mature 17+ and describes weapons, realistic combat effects, dismemberment, and mutilated corpses. That makes it a clearer fit for someone seeking graphic first-person survival horror, not proof that it is scarier than every other game. See the Resident Evil 7 biohazard rating summary.

Pick the description that matches the experience you want, then check its content summary for specific concerns. These examples are useful contrasts, not a league table of fear.
Little Nightmares III: eerie pursuit and puzzle-solving
This is the fit to consider if you want a stylized, side-on-feeling horror adventure organized around escape and puzzles rather than the graphic first-person combat described for Resident Evil 7. Its Teen rating does not make it universally mild: the ESRB summary calls out bloodstained environments and disturbing bodily imagery. The developer says you can play solo with an AI companion or online in co-op. See the developer’s Little Nightmares III page for its platform and play information.
Use this option when the pursuit-and-puzzle format appeals to you, but review the rating summary if blood, violence, or bodily imagery is a deal-breaker. Do not infer that co-op removes the unsettling content.
SOMA: psychological science-fiction horror
SOMA suits someone drawn to threatening creatures, science-fiction unease, and a sense of vulnerability. Frictional Games says there is no fighting back; its content disclosure mentions gore and references to suicide. Its story focus is not a reason to call it gore-free. The Switch/Switch 2 ESRB listing also describes mutilated bodies. Compare the Steam listing with the separate ESRB listing for the Switch/Switch 2 version if you are choosing based on content or platform.

The no-fighting-back detail is a useful distinction when comparing it with a combat-focused survival game: expect its horror to come from facing threats without fighting them off, not from mastering weapons. That does not make the experience less intense or remove the disclosed gore and themes. If helplessness is the element you most want to avoid, consider that before choosing SOMA even if its science-fiction story appeals to you.
Resident Evil 7 biohazard: graphic first-person survival horror
Consider this when you specifically want first-person survival horror with graphic combat and injury details. The ESRB summary is the strongest content check in the available information: it names weapons, realistic combat effects, dismemberment, and mutilated corpses, and assigns Mature 17+. If those are the elements you want to avoid, do not treat a general horror label or a different game’s rating as a substitute for checking this entry.
The Quarry: cinematic choices and group participation
The Quarry is a fit for players who want branching decisions and a cinematic structure, including options that change how the game is played. Supermassive Games describes adjustable gameplay difficulty, Movie Mode, online decision-making, and couch co-op. Its Deluxe offering includes an optional Gorefest Movie Mode, so that mode is not a suitable choice for someone trying to avoid gore. The developer’s game page describes the available modes.
Think of its multiplayer options as different ways to participate, not as a guarantee of cross-platform play: couch co-op is local, while online decision-making lets up to seven friends take part. Before planning an online session, check that everyone is on the same platform. Adjustable gameplay difficulty and Movie Mode are participation or presentation options; the descriptions do not say that either removes frightening scenes or graphic content.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The examples are included because official rating, developer, or publisher descriptions establish different decision-relevant features: pursuit, psychological helplessness, graphic combat, and cinematic choices. No universal fear score or reliable shared intensity scale is established for them, so the categories are intended to help you filter by preference, not rank the games by scariness.
How long is the main story, and can I finish it this weekend?
Use a main-story estimate as a planning reference, not a promise, and leave slack for exploration, difficulty, and decisions. Of the examples here, the available figure is for SOMA: Deku Deals displayed a 9-hour main-story estimate from HowLongToBeat in 2026, and an 11-hour estimate for main story plus extras.
Those are secondhand, changeable estimates reproduced by Deku Deals, not an official runtime or a measurement of every player’s completion time. A short weekend session may be enough for some players to finish a game with that estimate, but your pace and play time matter; the figure cannot guarantee completion. The original HowLongToBeat page was not available for independent checking, so treat Deku Deals’ displayed attribution as the source of the estimate. See the Deku Deals SOMA listing.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
No verified publisher runtime is available here for The Quarry. Its consequential choices also mean that one playthrough and replaying to explore other outcomes are different time commitments. No single reliable average completion time is established for horror games generally, so a genre-wide estimate would not be a sound scheduling tool.
Make a realistic time budget
- Look specifically for a main story estimate rather than a total that includes extras or replay.
- Decide whether you want to explore thoroughly or focus on the critical path; estimates may not match both styles.
- For a choice-driven game, decide whether one ending is enough or whether you want to revisit decisions.
- Leave a buffer instead of planning around the estimate as if it were a fixed runtime.
For the weekend question, compare the estimate with the hours you can actually reserve, not the number of calendar days. SOMA’s displayed 9-hour figure is a useful rough benchmark for its main story, but the 11-hour main-plus-extras figure shows how optional content can change the plan. Neither figure guarantees that a particular player will finish in that time.
How do I check whether the game works on my console?
Match the game’s exact edition and platform generation to the device you own. A listing for one console family or digital edition does not establish that another edition has the same compatibility or features.
Little Nightmares III platform listings
The developer lists PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series and Xbox One, Switch, and PC. Its ESRB entry also lists Switch 2. Because these sources list platforms differently, confirm the specific edition on the platform or store where you plan to play rather than assuming every edition shares the same features.
SOMA on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch
PlayStation describes its SOMA listing as a PS4 version playable on PS5, while warning that certain PS4 features may be absent. That is a backward-compatibility statement for that PlayStation version, not a transfer of the game to Nintendo hardware. The separate Switch/Switch 2 ESRB entry concerns a different platform listing. Check the PlayStation SOMA page for the PlayStation-specific qualification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Quarry editions and multiplayer limits
The publisher and developer list physical Standard Editions for PS4, PS5, and Xbox console generations, while the Deluxe Edition is digital-only. For online decision-making, Supermassive Games says up to seven friends can participate, and its FAQ says players must be on the same platform. The publisher also says there are no cross-generation or cross-platform saves. Its The Quarry FAQ was published in 2022 and updated July 7, 2026.
If you plan to use a PS4 physical disc with the relevant PS5 digital upgrade, the publisher says you need a PS5 with a disc drive and must keep the disc inserted. A digital-only PS5 cannot meet that disc requirement. Verify the edition and multiplayer arrangement before purchase, especially if your friends own a different console generation.

The publisher’s compatibility note is specific: The Quarry does not feature cross-generation or cross-platform saves. Do not assume that a save started on one console generation will carry over to another, or that friends can join simply because they own a copy. Match platform, generation, and edition before arranging a group playthrough.
What should I check before buying a physical or digital copy?
Confirm the platform, generation, format, and multiplayer setup on the exact listing; a game title alone does not tell you whether a particular copy will work for your setup. This matters most when you are buying a physical disc, using a console without a disc drive, or planning to play with friends.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify your device precisely. Note the console generation or PC platform, not only the brand family. Check that the store listing names the edition you can use.
- Choose physical or digital deliberately. The Quarry’s Deluxe Edition is digital-only, while physical Standard Editions are listed for PS4, PS5, and Xbox console generations. Check that a physical disc is compatible with your hardware and that you can use its drive.
- Check multiplayer before coordinating. For The Quarry’s online decision-making, the publisher’s FAQ requires players to be on the same platform. Do not assume cross-platform participation or cross-generation saves.
- Verify the particular listing. Confirm region, format, and stock on the seller’s page. A product entry or developer page does not establish that a copy is currently available in your region.
- Recheck content on the edition you intend to play. Use the rating summary and platform-specific information where available; do not infer that a different platform listing has an identical content description or feature set.
For a physical-product search, use a generation-specific query such as “The Quarry PS5 physical game,” then verify that the listing is actually a PS5 disc and not a digital code, PS4 copy, or unavailable product. PS4 and Xbox physical Standard Editions are alternatives only if explicitly labeled for the generation you own.
No price comparison is established for these editions, so compare the actual seller listings rather than assuming that physical or digital is cheaper. Check the product name, platform generation, disc-versus-digital format, region, and stock on the listing itself. A Deluxe label also matters for The Quarry because that edition is digital-only; it is not a substitute for checking whether you need a physical Standard Edition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I choose if I am sensitive to particular content?
Start with the content you know you want to avoid, then read the game’s own rating summary and developer disclosures rather than relying on a broad genre label. A rating descriptor can flag material worth checking, but it does not guarantee an exhaustive scene-by-scene account.
- If graphic injury is a concern, Resident Evil 7’s ESRB entry explicitly mentions dismemberment and mutilated corpses; SOMA’s disclosure mentions gore, and its Switch/Switch 2 summary details mutilated bodies.
- If disturbing imagery is your concern even in a Teen-rated game, Little Nightmares III’s summary includes bloodstained settings and disturbing bodily imagery.
- If suicide references matter to you, Frictional Games’ SOMA content disclosure mentions them.
- If you are considering a mode specifically to reduce intensity, verify what it changes. The Quarry offers adjustable gameplay difficulty and Movie Mode, but the available descriptions do not establish that these options remove frightening or graphic content.
When the rating information does not answer a specific concern, the available official description may not settle it. Avoid assuming that an unmentioned element is absent.
What is the practical decision order?
Work through fear style, content, time, then platform. This order prevents a promising synopsis or a familiar console label from hiding a mismatch that matters more to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an ESRB rating tell me exactly what happens in every scary scene?
No. The ESRB says its categories suggest age appropriateness, while descriptors identify content flags rather than providing a complete inventory. Read the title-specific summary for more detail, and do not treat an omitted detail as proof that it never appears.
Does The Quarry let friends make choices together online?
Yes. Supermassive Games describes online decision-making with up to seven friends, in addition to couch co-op. Online players must use the same platform, according to the publisher’s FAQ.
Is SOMA completely gore-free because it is story-focused?
No. Frictional Games’ disclosure mentions gore as well as references to suicide, and the Switch/Switch 2 ESRB summary describes mutilated bodies. Story emphasis does not mean the content is free of graphic material.
Can I assume a PS4 copy of SOMA is a PS5 edition?
No. PlayStation describes the listing as a PS4 version playable on PS5, with a warning that certain PS4 features may be absent. It is a PlayStation compatibility note, not a separate Nintendo edition or a guarantee that every feature is identical.
Does The Quarry support cross-platform online play or cross-generation saves?
The publisher says online decision-making players must be on the same platform, and that there are no cross-generation or cross-platform saves. Confirm everyone’s platform before planning a session.
Is a weekend enough time to finish SOMA?
Deku Deals displayed a 9-hour main-story estimate from HowLongToBeat in 2026, but it is a changeable, secondhand estimate rather than a guarantee. Compare it with the hours you can set aside and leave time for your own pace; the main-story-plus-extras estimate is 11 hours.

Bottom line: Choose the fear style and content you can enjoy, then use a qualified main-story estimate to plan your time and verify the exact edition, format, and multiplayer rules for your device.
