In July 2009, Horizon Data Center Solutions (Horizon), a Dallas-area colocation and managed-services provider, said it was looking for sites in Northern Virginia, Houston, and California. The company had filled its first Dallas data center and was starting a second. A March 2010 report later documented a lease in Manassas, Virginia, but the available contemporaneous accounts do not show that Horizon completed its full national expansion plan.

Which markets did Horizon plan to enter?

Horizon’s July 29, 2009 announcement named Northern Virginia, Houston, and California as target markets, building on its Dallas-area base. The company was working with Dallas broker GVA Cawley to evaluate locations. The report described site-seeking activity, not completed facilities in those three target markets. Data Center Knowledge’s July 2009 report also said Horizon had filled its first Dallas facility and begun work on a second.

Its Dallas-area facilities

The first facility was reported as 25,000 square feet in a Digital Realty Trust building at 4025 Midway in Carrollton, Texas. The second was reported as 12,500 square feet at 2440 Marsh Lane, also in Carrollton. These are sizes given in the 2009 account, not current measurements.

What was Horizon’s business model?

Horizon aimed at small and midsize businesses that needed hosted IT infrastructure, as well as modest projects for larger corporations. Rather than build every facility itself, it planned to lease wholesale data-center space, acquire managed-services providers, and combine facility operations with customer services. The 2009 report said Horizon had acquired Mareechi in April of that year.

CEO Lance Smith described the intended niche this way: “In between colo and the large IT outsourcers, we find that the market genuinely needs a flexible approach for small to mid-sized customers,” according to the 2009 report. The strategy sought customers between traditional colocation and large-scale IT outsourcing.

Did Horizon establish a Northern Virginia presence?

A March 12, 2010 report documented a specific expansion step: Horizon leased a suite at Power Loft in Manassas, Virginia. The suite was backed by 2 megawatts of power, with an option for an additional 10 megawatts. That account supports saying Horizon leased space in Manassas; it does not establish that all the optional capacity was taken up or that the full national plan was delivered. Data Center Knowledge’s March 2010 report described the company’s wider ambition as up to 120 MW across Dallas, Northern Virginia, and California.

The market lists in the two reports are not identical. Houston appeared among the locations Horizon was seeking in 2009, while the later 120 MW plan named Dallas, Northern Virginia, and California. The reports do not explain the change, so Houston should not be presented as part of that three-market capacity plan.

What became of Horizon?

In July 2010, a company press release said Smith would focus on growth financing and strategic mergers and acquisitions in support of a previously announced “tri-coastal” strategy. It described Horizon’s offerings as colocation, managed services, and infrastructure-as-a-service. The July 2010 release shows that the company was still describing a growth strategy, but does not document completion of the planned capacity.

On September 21, 2011, Horizon announced that it was changing its corporate name to VAZATA, saying its offering had evolved beyond traditional colocation. The name-change announcement is the clearest endpoint for the company’s later identity in this historical account.

A 2020 New York court decision recounts a later, narrower development: VAZATA sold its wholly owned subsidiary Horizon Data Center Solutions II to Day1 Solutions, and the Manassas lease was terminated in December 2015 after Day1 defaulted. The decision concerns that subsidiary and lease; it does not establish the present status or complete operating footprint of every successor business.

What the expansion record establishes

  • In 2009, Horizon identified Northern Virginia, Houston, and California as target markets while operating from Carrollton-area facilities.
  • In 2010, reporting documented a Manassas lease backed by 2 MW and an option for 10 MW more.
  • The reported ambition of up to 120 MW covered Dallas, Northern Virginia, and California; it was a plan, not a verified delivered total.
  • Horizon announced its name change to VAZATA in 2011. Later records describe the sale of the Manassas subsidiary and termination of that lease, but do not resolve the current status of the broader successor business.
