Hong Kong’s Transport Department trialled pole-mounted LED devices that cast red light onto pedestrian waiting areas when the crossing signal shows a red “man.” The lights are projected onto the ground, not embedded in the pavement, and they supplement—not replace—the ordinary pedestrian signals.
Why Hong Kong added the warning lights
The Transport Department said it began the trial in July 2022 at four signalised crossing locations. Its stated concern was that pedestrians looking down at handheld smart devices might pay less attention to traffic signals.
How the projected lights work
Each device has an LED module mounted on an extension arm attached to a traffic-signal pole. When the red pedestrian signal is lit, the module projects red light onto the pedestrian waiting area. The light switches off when the green or flashing green pedestrian signal is on, and its brightness adjusts automatically to ambient light.
What pedestrians should do
The projected red light is an additional warning, not a separate crossing signal or a substitute for the usual signal. Pedestrians should continue to follow the ordinary pedestrian signals and wait for the permitted crossing indication before crossing.

These are not lights embedded in the pavement
The wording matters: the equipment is attached to a signal pole and shines onto the waiting area. The Transport Department’s description does not say that LEDs are installed in, or built into, the road surface.
