There is no single best energy setup for every home. Grid electricity avoids the cost and upkeep of a rooftop system; rooftop solar can reduce the amount of electricity you buy, depending on your roof and local utility rules; and a battery can shift some solar power to later hours or support outage backup when installed with the right equipment. Community solar may be an option if your roof is unsuitable or you rent.
Compare the four home energy setups
| Setup | Main value | Trade-off or question |
|---|---|---|
| Grid electricity | No rooftop solar or home battery installation to manage. | Your costs and service depend on retail rates, reliability, and options offered by your utility. |
| Grid-tied rooftop solar | Generates electricity at home and may reduce purchases from the grid. | Roof production, financing terms, and the utility’s export-credit rules shape the economics. Panels alone generally do not operate during a grid outage. |
| Solar plus battery | Can shift some solar generation into evening hours and, with suitable system design, provide backup power. | It adds cost. Compare usable energy, power output, inverter and islanding capability, and the loads the system can serve. |
| Community solar | May let you participate in a shared solar project without installing panels on your roof. | Availability, subscription terms, and bill-credit rules vary; check local programs and contract details. |
This is a qualitative comparison, not a price or savings estimate. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes rooftop suitability, solar economics, and community solar in its Homeowner’s Guide to Solar.
Check whether your roof and home suit solar
Roof age and condition, shade, size, shape, and slope all affect whether a rooftop installation makes sense. DOE says south-facing roofs with slopes of 15 to 40 degrees typically perform best, though other roofs can also be suitable. A site assessment matters more than a simple orientation rule: shading, local sunlight, and the layout of usable roof space affect production.
Use NREL’s PVWatts calculator for an initial estimate, then request a custom, site-specific production estimate. DOE’s guide notes that NREL analyses use an average system size of 7.15 kW DC, with a 3–11 kW range; that is an analysis assumption, not a recommended size for every home or a consumer quote.

Work out the economics using your utility’s rules
Solar savings depend on how much electricity your household uses, system size and production, whether you buy or lease, your utility’s rates, and how the utility compensates you for electricity exported to the grid. Net-metering eligibility, export rates, and bill-credit design differ by state and utility, so a national average or generic payback period cannot establish what your household will save.
- Review your electric bills. Note total consumption and, if available, hourly or seasonal usage. The timing of consumption matters when deciding whether to use solar power directly, export it, or store it.
- Check the roof. Consider its condition, shading, available area, direction, and slope before seeking quotes.
- Estimate production. Use DOE’s solar guide to find its PVWatts recommendation for an initial estimate, then ask an installer for a site-specific projection.
- Get written proposals. Compare total system cost and financing terms, including purchase or lease terms, rather than relying only on projected savings.
- Confirm utility compensation. Ask your utility for current rates, eligibility, and written terms for exported electricity; include those terms in your comparison.
- Check local programs. Incentives and community-solar availability are location-dependent. Confirm current details with your utility and relevant state or local consumer-energy resources.
Without your location, utility tariff, and household usage, there is no reliable universal installation price or payback figure to apply. Treat any proposal’s savings estimate as dependent on its stated production assumptions and the utility terms in effect.

Decide whether a battery adds value
Solar production can fall as household use rises in the evening. A battery can store some generated electricity and discharge it later, reducing the mismatch between generation and use. It does not create energy, and its usefulness depends on the household’s consumption pattern, system design, and the value of electricity at different times. DOE explains this role in Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics.
When comparing batteries, distinguish energy capacity from power capacity. Energy capacity describes how much energy the battery can store; power capacity describes how much it can deliver at one time. Both affect what the system can do. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2024 residential battery storage assumptions provide technical context, not a quote for a particular home.

Assess the battery separately from the panels: compare its added cost with the value of using stored energy later, and decide whether outage backup is a goal. For solar-plus-storage system considerations, see NLR’s Solar-Plus-Storage Analysis.
Understand what solar can—and cannot—do in an outage
Ordinary grid-connected rooftop solar generally shuts off when the grid fails. This is a safety feature: the system is not designed to send electricity into a grid that utility workers may be repairing. As DOE explains in Solar and Resilience Basics, outage operation requires storage and a properly configured inverter that can isolate the home from the grid.

Backup capability depends on stored energy, available power, system configuration, and the appliances or circuits being served. Before signing a proposal, ask the installer which loads can run, whether the system can start them, and how long the backup is expected to last under specified conditions. Do not assume that a battery will power the entire home or run every appliance simultaneously.
