Put an indoor security camera where it can clearly capture the route or shared area you want to monitor—often an interior view of a ground-floor entry, hallway, or stairway. First decide what activity matters, then choose a position that avoids blind spots, glare, and obstructions. Check the camera’s live and recorded video and Wi-Fi connection from that exact spot before settling on the placement.
Start with the area you need to see
Choose the camera’s purpose before choosing its position. It might be to view an interior approach from a door or window, monitor movement through a shared hallway, or check activity near a particular room. A hallway or stairway can show movement between rooms, but the best view depends on your floor plan and the camera’s field of view.
CISA recommends considering camera views of doors and windows and positioning cameras to reduce blind spots. Use that as a planning principle, not a reason to point a camera at every opening: prioritize the route or area that matters to you, then consider whether walls, open doors, or furniture block the view. CISA’s residential security guidance covers these placement considerations.
Choose an angle that shows useful activity
A wide image is not automatically a useful one. The view should show the area you intend to monitor clearly enough to identify relevant activity, and the camera’s motion detection should cover that activity. A camera aimed down a route may show movement along it; one aimed into a shared room may capture a broader area. The right height and angle depend on the model, its field of view, and how it detects motion.
#1 Best Overall
- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
Do not assume that every camera detects movement the same way. SimpliSafe, for example, says its indoor camera’s motion detector is most sensitive to side-to-side movement and advises covering a significant portion of the room rather than framing only a doorway. That is product-specific advice, not a universal rule. Check the guidance for your model. SimpliSafe’s placement guidance explains its recommendations.
Avoid glare, backlighting, and problems with glass
Bright windows or lamps behind a person can make them appear dark in the image. Reflections from glass can also affect video or night vision, and some cameras’ motion sensors may not detect activity through a window. If your goal is to monitor indoors, an interior-facing position that does not point into a window is generally the more direct option. Performance and available settings differ by model.

If you must point an indoor camera toward a window, check the manufacturer’s instructions and review footage in the lighting conditions you expect. Google suggests keeping the lens flush against the glass to reduce reflections when using its indoor camera to view outside, but that model-specific workaround does not guarantee outdoor-grade performance. Google also notes that mesh screens can affect motion detection. Google’s camera-placement guidance, Ring’s placement guide, and TP-Link’s positioning guidance describe relevant lighting and window limitations.
Test the position before finalizing it
- Mark the intended area. Decide which entry route, transition, or shared area the camera should show.
- Check for obstructions. Look from the proposed camera position for furniture, walls, open doors, or other objects that hide important parts of the scene.
- Review the image. Use the camera app to check live video and a recording from the intended location. Confirm that the important area is visible and that lighting does not make the view unusable.
- Check detection and connection. If you use motion alerts, verify that the activity area falls within the camera’s detection view. Check Wi-Fi where the camera will sit or mount; a signal that works elsewhere in the home may not be adequate there.
- Adjust and check again. Change the angle or position if needed, then review the image and connection again. Follow model-specific guidance for placement and mounting.
These checks reflect Google’s advice to review live and recorded video and TP-Link’s guidance on checking Wi-Fi and view conditions.

Account for privacy, access, and installation constraints
Limit the camera’s view to the area needed for its purpose. Think about who may be captured in a shared space and who can access the footage. Privacy and data-protection requirements vary by location; Google places responsibility on users to comply with applicable laws. Google’s placement guidance states that users are responsible for making sure their camera use complies with applicable privacy and data-protection laws.
Placement is only one part of protecting a connected camera. The FTC recommends updating devices and their apps, securing the home Wi-Fi network, and reviewing IP camera access logs for unfamiliar access when logs are available. Use unique account credentials, and consider the device’s power arrangement, cable reach, and safe mounting when selecting a position. The FTC’s connected-device guidance provides additional security steps.
