ULED and Mini-LED describe different things, so they are not competing TV types. ULED is Hisense’s brand name for a suite of picture technologies; Mini-LED describes the backlight. A Hisense TV can use both, as the company’s 2026 U6 and U7 lineup does. To choose between TVs, compare their exact model numbers and sizes—not these labels alone.
What’s the difference between Hisense ULED and Mini-LED?
ULED is a Hisense-branded package of picture technologies; Hisense says the package is designed to improve color, contrast, brightness, and motion. It is not one particular panel or backlight type. Hisense’s U.S. TV lineup uses ULED as a product label.
Mini-LED refers to the backlight. It uses smaller LEDs than a conventional LED backlight. Hisense explains that more, smaller light sources can provide more even illumination, and that local dimming can adjust backlight brightness in different areas of the screen. The terms can therefore describe the same television from different angles: one identifies a branded technology suite, the other a backlighting approach. Hisense’s March 9, 2026 U.S. lineup announcement presents its U6 and U7 series as ULED MiniLED TVs.
Is ULED better than Mini-LED?
That comparison does not have a universal answer because the terms are not alternatives. A TV can be both ULED and Mini-LED, and neither label by itself is a performance rating. Picture quality depends on the complete implementation in a particular model, including its dimming behavior, panel, processing, and other features. Compare specific TVs at the same screen size and in a similar price range rather than trying to choose one label over the other.

What to compare when choosing two Hisense TVs
Start with the full model number and screen size. Hisense’s product lineup and specifications vary by model; a feature advertised for one set should not be assumed to apply to another with a similar name.
- Local dimming and backlight implementation: Mini-LED is a broad category, not a promise of a particular number of dimming zones or a specific level of contrast. The way a TV controls its zones affects how bright and dark areas appear together and how visible bright objects are against dark backgrounds. Check the individual model’s specifications and independent reviews for its actual behavior.
- Brightness and reflections: Look for model-specific brightness and anti-reflection information if the TV will be used in a bright room. Manufacturer brightness figures are specifications, not independent test measurements.
- Motion and gaming: Check the model’s native refresh rate, variable refresh rate support, HDMI and gaming features, and any stated limitations. ULED and Mini-LED do not establish these details.
- Smart platform: Hisense says the 2026 U7 has Google TV and Fire TV variants, identified as U7SG and U7SF respectively. Confirm the platform on the exact listing, rather than relying on the U7 name alone.
- Price and independent reviews: Compare like-sized TVs at the prices actually available to you, and use reviews of the exact model where possible. The labels alone do not establish which set is the better value or performs better.
What about RGB Mini-LED?
RGB Mini-LED is a specific implementation, not a synonym for all Mini-LED TVs. Hisense describes its 116-inch UX model as using red, green, and blue LEDs for RGB local dimming, rather than standard blue and white LEDs. That description applies to the named product; it should not be generalized to other Mini-LED models. See Hisense’s 116UX product page for its explanation of that set.

Why the Mini-LED label does not tell the whole story
Local dimming means a TV can control backlight brightness in separate zones. Mini-LED can provide many small light sources, but zone count, image processing, panel behavior, and dimming quality differ among TVs. The term therefore does not tell you how well a particular television controls contrast or avoids halos around bright objects.
For historical context, Hisense’s 2023 UX-series specification sheet lists more than 20,000 Mini-LEDs, more than 5,000 local-dimming zones, and a peak brightness of 2,500 nits for the 85-inch UX model. Those are manufacturer specifications for that model and year, not general Mini-LED figures or independent measurements. They should not be used to infer the specifications of current U6 or U7 sets.

What Hisense’s 2026 lineup tells you
Hisense’s March 2026 U.S. announcement identifies the U6 and U7 as its ULED MiniLED rollout and names the U6SF Pro, as well as U7 versions with Google TV (U7SG) and Fire TV (U7SF). Its U.S. television category page also lists ULED Mini-LED models including the U8QG, U75QG, U65QF, and QD7QF. The category page is dynamic, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a permanent catalog. Model names, sizes, features, and retailer availability can change; check the exact SKU and listing before buying.
In the announcement, Hisense Americas Region president David Gold said, “With MiniLED across the entire ULED lineup and advanced AI processing, we’re pushing picture quality to new heights—offering big-screen excellence and demonstrating that top-tier technology can be for everyone.” This is Hisense’s characterization of its products, not an independent assessment of their picture quality.
