In a small home-based pilot, 12 middle-aged Japanese women had some better sleep-related measures while using it. The result is promising, but it does not show that Hinoki oil treats insomnia or that a store-bought bottle will have the same effect.
What is Hinoki root oil?
The study tested Kagawa Hinoki root essential oil (KHREO), made from roots cultivated in Kagawa Prefecture. Its most abundant reported volatile compounds included α-pinene, δ-cadinene, γ-cadinene, limonene, and α-muurolene. Those findings describe the oil used in the study; they do not establish that oils made from Hinoki leaves or branches—or retail oils generally—have the same composition. The 2026 paper identifies the study material.
What did the sleep study find?
Zennifa and colleagues’ paper, published in the Journal of Wood Science on September 1, 2026, describes a single-blind crossover pilot involving 12 Japanese women aged 35–60. Participants’ mean age was 46 years (SD 6.72). Each woman used KHREO for two weeks and an unscented squalane-oil control for two weeks.
After 13 days of exposure, the authors reported better questionnaire scores for sleepiness upon awakening and fatigue recovery in the oil condition than in the control, along with fewer nighttime awakenings recorded by smartwatch. EEG readings showed increased slow-wave activity around sleep onset after seven days, which the authors interpreted as consistent with deeper sleep. The results point to possible benefits on selected measures; they do not establish a large or clinically proven effect.

How did participants use it?
At home, participants put three drops of the assigned oil in a paper cup, inhaled its aroma for 10 seconds before bed, then kept the cup about 30 cm from the nose overnight. Researchers assessed sleep using a wearable EEG headband, smartwatch measures, and the OSA sleep inventory MA questionnaire. This was the study protocol, not a validated or recommended dose for consumers.
What the results do—and do not—show
The pilot is relevant because it examined sleep under everyday home conditions and combined physiological measurements with participants’ own assessments. Kyushu University Associate Professor Kuniyoshi Shimizu said this combination helped the researchers examine sleep “from multiple perspectives under everyday home conditions.” The university’s September 16, 2026 release describes the study and quotes Shimizu.

- The sample was small and specific: 12 women in one age range and region cannot establish whether the same results apply to men, younger adults, or other populations.
- The design had limitations: It was single blind, and some outcomes came from wearable devices and self-report.
- It was not an insomnia-treatment trial: The findings do not show that the oil treats diagnosed sleep disorders.
- The tested oil may not match other oils: The study used root-derived Kagawa Hinoki oil, and it did not compare plant parts, brands, or commercial products.
Does this mean you should try Hinoki oil?
The study does not establish an ideal product, dose, or use condition. Kyushu University says further research is needed to determine those details. The paper names Ouken Co., Ltd. as the supplier of the study oil, but the available sources do not establish that this exact material is sold to consumers. A bottle labeled Hinoki essential oil should not be assumed to be the same oil tested in the pilot—or to deliver the reported outcomes.
