Western Digital says its High Bandwidth Drive technology can let multiple drive heads read and write across multiple tracks at once, delivering up to twice the bandwidth of a conventional HDD. The company says the technology is with customers for validation, but its claims have not yet been independently benchmarked and the sources reviewed do not establish broad retail availability.

What is WD High Bandwidth Drive technology?

High Bandwidth Drive is Western Digital’s proposed way to increase hard-drive throughput by having multiple heads work on multiple tracks simultaneously, rather than relying on a single stream of activity. WD announced it on February 3, 2026, positioning it as a way to move large data sets faster while retaining HDD storage economics. The company specifically points to AI storage as a potential use, but that is a stated target—not demonstrated workload performance. WD’s announcement describes the technology and its intended direction.

In practical terms, bandwidth describes how quickly data can be transferred in a sustained stream. It is not the same as random I/O performance, which matters when a workload repeatedly accesses many small, scattered pieces of data. WD has not published independent results or finalized product specifications in the sources reviewed, so the announcement does not establish how the technology will perform across different workloads.

How much faster are high-bandwidth hard drives?

WD claims High Bandwidth Drive can provide up to 2x the bandwidth of conventional HDDs, with a longer-term path to 8x. These are company claims and roadmap targets, not independently measured results. The cited announcement does not provide a test setup, shipping-product comparison, or separate figures for random I/O, capacity, power use, or price per terabyte.

WD also described a companion technology called Dual Pivot. It adds a second, independently operating actuator set on a separate pivot. WD says Dual Pivot could provide up to 2x sequential I/O on its own, and that pairing it with High Bandwidth Drive could yield up to 4x sequential I/O. That 4x figure describes the proposed combined sequential-I/O gain; it is distinct from the 8x longer-term bandwidth target for High Bandwidth Drive alone. WD says Dual Pivot remains in the lab and expects drives using it to become available in 2028. The company’s announcement is the source for these claims and timing.

Are high-bandwidth hard drives available yet?

WD says High Bandwidth Drive is with customers for validation. That indicates the technology is being evaluated, not that a generally available retail drive has been established. The cited sources do not identify a retail model, price, finalized specifications, or independent benchmark for a shipping High Bandwidth Drive product.

Dual Pivot is at an earlier stage: WD says it is still in the lab, with availability targeted for 2028. That date is a company expectation, not a guarantee. Until products ship and independent testing is available, buyers should treat the speed figures as provisional.

How this fits WD’s capacity roadmap

WD presented its performance technologies alongside separate plans to increase HDD capacity. Its February 2026 roadmap described parallel ePMR and HAMR paths:

HAMR production Qualification underway; ramp production planned for 2027, according to WD.
HAMR capacity path WD set a target of 100TB by 2029.

These are announced plans, not guaranteed release dates or available retail specifications. StorageReview’s February 3, 2026 report summarizes the roadmap, while WD’s official announcement includes the company’s forward-looking-statement qualifications.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell buyers

The concept is aimed at a real distinction: a drive can offer very high capacity without delivering the throughput needed for every data-intensive task. If multiple heads can operate effectively in parallel, sustained transfers could improve. But the announcement alone does not establish performance in a particular server, NAS, or AI system.

  • Sequential bandwidth: WD has supplied claims, but the sources reviewed contain no independent side-by-side test.
  • Random I/O: The announcement’s bandwidth claims do not establish random-access performance.
  • Capacity and price: WD has announced capacity targets, but no finalized price or measured cost-per-terabyte comparison for High Bandwidth Drive products was established.
  • Power: The performance announcement does not provide a comparable power figure for a High Bandwidth Drive product.
  • Compatibility: Required software, controller, or infrastructure changes are not specified in the cited material.

WD separately announced power-optimized HDDs for cold AI data. The company says these drives would use 20% less power while preserving sub-second access, with customer qualification expected in 2027. Those figures and timing are WD’s claims, and they concern this separate announced product direction—not measured characteristics of High Bandwidth Drive. WD’s announcement gives the company’s stated details.

What to watch for next

For a buying decision, the meaningful milestone is not a roadmap multiplier but a shipping drive with published specifications and independent tests. Those tests should distinguish sustained sequential throughput from random I/O, and identify the drive configuration, workload, power draw, and system requirements. Until that information exists, conventional NAS or enterprise HDDs remain the available category to compare on current price, capacity, and documented performance; they should not be described as using WD’s announced High Bandwidth Drive technology.
