For a nonstop YouTube video stream, choose between Hetzner Cloud and a dedicated server by comparing the stream’s sustained outbound traffic, encoder CPU demand, region and network route, current plan price, and recovery design. Hetzner Cloud offers flexible capacity, with shared CPU on CX/CPX/CAX plans and dedicated CPU on CCX; standard dedicated root servers have a dedicated 1 Gbit/s uplink and unlimited traffic under Hetzner’s published policy. Neither hosting choice by itself guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast.
What matters most for a nonstop stream
A YouTube live stream sent from a server is a continuous outbound workload. The key distinction is not simply “cloud versus physical”: it is whether your chosen plan can encode the video reliably and carry its sustained traffic without unexpected charges.
- CPU: A software encoder must keep up with the source video in real time. Shared cloud plans can burst above a baseline, while Hetzner describes CCX as providing dedicated CPU resources and continuous, predictable performance. Your stream’s actual CPU need depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, and software; the available evidence does not establish a universal minimum server size.
- Traffic: An uplink speed is a capacity measure; a traffic allowance is a volume limit. Estimate the latter from bitrate and hours streamed, then check the exact plan’s allowance and overage terms.
- Network path: Region and routing to YouTube’s ingest server matter. A server’s advertised port speed does not prove that a particular route will remain healthy.
- Recovery: A stream can fail because of the encoder process, media source, connectivity, or YouTube ingest. You need monitoring and a tested recovery or backup-encoder plan as well as a suitable host.
How the Hetzner options differ
| Option | CPU model | Traffic and network | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner shared Cloud: CX, CPX, CAX | Shared resources, with baseline CPU performance and temporary bursts. | For EU CX, CPX, and CAX, Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 20 TB included; US and Singapore allowances vary by plan. Cloud overage is billable. | You value cloud capacity and locations, and your tested encoder workload fits shared CPU behavior. |
| Hetzner CCX Cloud | Dedicated CPU resources; Hetzner describes continuous, predictable high CPU performance. | Allowance varies by plan and region; overage is billable. | You want more predictable CPU behavior without leasing a whole physical server. |
| Hetzner dedicated root server | Physical server resources are dedicated to your workload. | Hetzner documents a dedicated 1 Gbit/s uplink by default and unlimited traffic for root servers. The 10 Gbit/s uplink option instead includes 20 TB before overage charges. | Your workload is sustained and your traffic needs make the published standard traffic policy useful, subject to model and location availability. |
Traffic figures and policies above are from Hetzner documentation last changed 2024-05-21; verify the exact model, region, current allowance, and price before ordering because product terms can change. The AX42 product page also lists a 1 Gbit/s port and minimum network availability of 99.9%; that product-page figure is not a guarantee that a YouTube stream will stay live end to end. See Hetzner traffic documentation, Hetzner Cloud FAQ, Hetzner Cloud server types, and the AX42 product page.
Estimate bandwidth before choosing a plan
Start with the video bitrate you expect to send to YouTube. YouTube’s networking guidance says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For a continuously running server, translate bitrate into monthly traffic and compare it with the allowance for the exact location and plan.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose an encoder target. For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 12 Mbps for 1080p60, and 6 Mbps for 720p60. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular server can encode at that setting.
- Allow network headroom. Reserve at least the 20% margin YouTube recommends rather than provisioning exactly to the stream bitrate. Confirm that sustained upload capacity on the selected server and route can support it.
- Estimate volume. Approximate outbound data in decimal GB as
bitrate in Mbps × seconds streamed ÷ 8,000. At a constant 10 Mbps for 30 days, that is about 3,240 GB, or 3.24 TB, before protocol overhead. Multiply by the actual daily streaming time if the stream is not truly continuous. - Check the plan’s terms. Compare that estimate against included traffic for the selected plan and region. Hetzner’s Cloud billing FAQ says excess traffic is billed in 100 MB blocks; 75% and 100% usage notices are alerts, not caps.

Choose based on your workload, not a blanket rule
Pick shared Cloud when flexibility matters and your test passes
CX, CPX, or CAX may fit a modest or otherwise well-tested encoder workload when burstable shared CPU is acceptable. The relevant traffic allowance depends on plan and region: the documented 20 TB applies to EU CX, CPX, and CAX, not automatically to US, Singapore, or every Cloud family. Check current pricing and availability for the location you need.

Consider CCX when CPU predictability is the concern
If encoding load is sustained or your stream is CPU-intensive, CCX is the Cloud middle ground to evaluate. Hetzner describes its CPU resources as exclusive and its performance as continuous and predictable. It remains a Cloud plan with plan- and region-specific traffic terms, so it does not remove the need to calculate usage.
Consider a dedicated root server for sustained traffic and physical isolation
A standard dedicated root server is worth evaluating when you need sustained server resources and the published 1 Gbit/s dedicated uplink and unlimited-traffic policy suits your traffic profile. Confirm the specific model and location. Do not assume the same traffic terms for the 10 Gbit/s add-on: Hetzner documents 20 TB included and per-TB overage for that option.

Benchmark before committing to an encoder workload
There is no evidence-based universal CPU threshold for a given resolution, codec, or software encoder. Test the exact source, encoder, and output settings on the candidate plan or model. If CPU remains saturated or the encoder falls behind, move to a configuration with suitable predictable CPU capacity rather than assuming a larger traffic allowance will solve an encoding bottleneck.
Configure and test the YouTube stream
For a server-based DIY setup, the exact commands and interface depend on the encoder you choose; the available evidence does not establish one universal software recipe. The operational requirements below apply regardless of encoder. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps. For H.264, it recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

- Prepare the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its stream key and ingest details. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public code, logs, screenshots, or a shared configuration.
- Set the encoder deliberately. Select a supported protocol and codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings page for the applicable recommendation rather than assuming one bitrate suits every codec or picture.
- Check the encoder host’s capacity. Ensure CPU can sustain real-time encoding and the network can carry the total bitrate with headroom. Watch for dropped frames, encoder lag, or rising CPU use during a representative test.
- Start a private or unlisted test and inspect the preview. YouTube recommends testing before going live. Confirm video, audio, framing, and stream health in Live Control Room before relying on the setup.
- Rehearse failure and recovery. Test backup-encoder failover and the recovery path you expect to use. A planned restart or fallback is more useful than discovering during a long-running broadcast that a process or route cannot recover.
- Monitor during operation. Watch stream health and audio/video continuity. YouTube’s guidance recommends continuous monitoring; an unattended server still needs a way to detect a failed encoder or interrupted ingest.
YouTube’s live tips also recommend setting up the encoder in advance, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing failover, verifying accessibility, monitoring the program, and stopping the encoder when the event ends. See encoder settings and live streaming tips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why neither server choice guarantees “nonstop”
A host’s network-availability figure concerns a network service measure, not every component between a media file and a viewer. Continuous delivery also depends on a running encoder, readable source media, software supervision, routing, YouTube ingest, and a working restart or failover procedure. YouTube advises testing the encoder, monitoring stream health, leaving bandwidth headroom, and testing backup-encoder failover; its guidance does not certify any Hetzner configuration for continuous uptime.

Troubleshoot common stream failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable or insufficient connection | Available upload bandwidth, bitrate, route, or competing traffic. | Check the stream’s total bitrate and sustained outbound capacity; retain YouTube’s recommended 20% margin, then test again. |
| Encoder falls behind or CPU stays saturated | Encoding workload exceeds the plan’s sustained CPU capacity. | Measure the exact workload. On shared CX/CPX/CAX, account for burstable shared CPU; evaluate CCX dedicated CPU or a suitable dedicated model if a test shows the need. |
| Stream stops after traffic use rises | Cloud allowance or billable overage, rather than raw uplink speed. | Review usage and the exact region/plan policy. Cloud overage is billable; usage notices are not caps. Re-estimate monthly traffic before continuing. |
| Encoder is running but YouTube is not receiving a healthy stream | Stream key, ingest connection, encoder state, or YouTube-side stream health. | Check the key and ingest configuration privately, inspect Live Control Room, and test the backup or restart path. |
| Stream breaks despite an advertised availability percentage | The published network measure does not cover the whole broadcast chain. | Check encoder process, source, route, ingest, and monitoring/recovery. Do not treat a product-page availability figure as end-to-end stream uptime. |
