The current guide says ranged’s former advantage no longer applies, while a blocking rework made melee more potent. Choose based on the combat loop and equipment you want to use, not an assumed damage ranking.
How melee and ranged builds differ
The Steam description lists melee weapons, ranged weapons, and magic, and a current build guide provides separate melee and ranged setups. Its recommendations are build-guide advice, not the results of a controlled comparison: the sources do not establish which clears enemies faster or progresses more efficiently.
| Comparison | Ranged example | Melee example |
|---|---|---|
| Named weapons | Compound Bow | Daemon Dagger, Enchanted Sword, and Enchanted Shield |
| Early priorities | Critical chance and damage, followed by health and defense | Divine Immunity and Onrush, followed by Crit Master |
| Balance context in the current guide | Its earlier significant advantage is described as no longer applying | A blocking rework is described as making melee more potent |
| Best way to view the recommendation | A distinct ranged route, not a guaranteed top build | A stronger post-rework option, not an automatic choice for every player |
The detailed recommendations below come from Pocket Gamer’s guide, credited to player @HabibTryHard. The guide was updated October 5, 2026, and identifies Hero Tale version 1.4.18. Treat its exact route and equipment as version-sensitive advice.
Choose ranged if its priorities suit you
Pocket Gamer’s ranged setup develops critical chance and critical damage first, then adds health and defense before movement speed. In its stated sequence, magic nodes come last. For a first run with one Dark skill point, that is the guide’s suggested order, not an independently verified optimal path.

Ranged gear in the guide
The example uses the Carapean set and Compound Bow. The guide says the Compound Bow can be bought at the Inventor’s Shop in the Inventor’s Atelier; it also describes shops, enemy drops, and rewards as sources of equipment.
Choose melee if its priorities suit you
The melee route starts with Divine Immunity and Onrush, then builds toward critical strike rate with Crit Master. The guide describes Divine Immunity as adding 10% defense and Onrush as allowing you to charge an attack while searching for the next opponent. These are the guide’s descriptions and are not independently tested here.

Melee gear in the guide
The named equipment is the Carapean set, Daemon Dagger, Enchanted Shield, and Enchanted Sword. The guide points to shops, drops, or rewards for gear, but availability can depend on progression and game updates.
What the balance changes mean for your choice
Older claims that ranged is significantly ahead should not be treated as current fact. Pocket Gamer’s version 1.4.18 guide says that advantage is no longer present and credits a blocking rework with making melee more potent. That does not establish a universal winner: there is no controlled side-by-side time-to-kill or progression test in the cited material.

Hero Tale’s skill tree gives room to adapt rather than locking you into a single prescribed route. Steam describes almost 300 nodes and player-selected stat priorities, while Pocket Gamer says its paths can be adjusted. If you start with one style and dislike its combat rhythm or priorities, you can change your development instead of treating the guide as a rigid formula.
