These are adaptable late-game recommendations from Pocket Gamer’s guide, not a tested ranking or a guarantee that one path beats the other.
How to choose between melee and ranged
Choose based on the combat style and weapon setup you want, your current level and skill-point budget, and whether you can obtain the guide’s example equipment. The guide presents progression examples rather than a universal build: its ranged tree is shown at about level 73, while its melee examples include a tree around level 65 and a final tree around level 188. The guide also cautions that a short build guide cannot account for every boss encounter.

Ranged build: critical chance first
Pocket Gamer’s guide, updated October 5, 2026 for version 1.4.18, says ranged is still potent but no longer has the significant advantage it once had; it characterizes the change as not being a ranged nerf. This is the guide’s balance assessment, not an independently verified developer statement.

Skill progression
- With only one Dark skill point on a first run: prioritize critical chance and critical damage, then health and defence, then movement speed. Leave magic nodes until last.
- When the Dark tree is available: take HP nodes, Hermes Feet, and Hunter, followed by Falcon Agility.
- Around level 50: work toward Man of Focus and Weak Spot Hunt.
- After level 60: invest in Berserker Soul. The guide’s reasoning is that critical multiplier becomes more useful once critical chance has been raised.
Ranged equipment
- Compound Bow: purchased from the Inventor’s Shop at the Inventor’s Atelier. Until you can get it, use the gear that gives you the most damage output.
- Carapean set: available from Barnaba’s Shop at Deamon Market or as a reward for defeating Deamon Mercenary.
Melee build: defence, charge, then critical strikes
The guide attributes melee’s improved potency to a developer rework of the block mechanic. Its early skill priorities are Divine Immunity and Onrush, followed by Crit Master.
Skill progression
- Divine Immunity: the guide says it increases defence by 10% and applies to item stats.
- Onrush: charges the attack while searching for the next opponent; the guide notes this can help with farming.
- Crit Master: invest in critical strikes after the early defensive and charge skills.
Melee equipment
- Carapean set: available from Barnaba’s Shop at Deamon Market or as a Deamon Mercenary reward.
- Daemon Dagger: available from Barnaba’s Shop.
- Enchanted Shield: dropped by Monstrous Skeleton in the Graveyard.
- Enchanted Sword: dropped by Necromancer in Shadow Temple. The guide warns that obtaining it may require significant farming.
Adjust the recommendations to your progress
The guide emphasizes flexibility, saying “nothing’s set in stone!” Its skill forest allows many node combinations, so use the listed priorities as a route rather than a rigid template. If you lack a named weapon or armor piece, the ranged advice is to equip the gear that currently produces the most damage; for either path, consider your available skill points and the encounter you are preparing for instead of assuming the late-game example fits every stage.
