They evolved from telephone and communications equipment into a way to hear live performances privately, and eventually into portable personal music devices. The key change was not just how headphones were built, but where and why people listened.
Who invented headphones?
There is no single inventor or company responsible for headphones as we know them. Their early history grew from practical telephone and communications equipment, with multiple contributors and uses. A surviving headset associated with Nathaniel Baldwin is an important artifact, but it does not establish him as the sole inventor.
What the Baldwin headset shows
The Smithsonian National Museum of American History catalogs a Type C headset bearing Nathaniel Baldwin’s name and patent dates of May 10, 1910, and September 14, 1915. The museum dates the object to around 1919. Those markings document Baldwin’s association with early headsets and the patent dates on this particular artifact; they do not settle the broader question of who invented headphones. Smithsonian National Museum of American History collection record.
What were headphones originally used for?
Early headsets served telephone operators and communications work, where wearing a receiver left the user’s hands available for other tasks. Head-mounted listening was initially practical equipment, not primarily a way to enjoy recorded music on the move.

Private access to live performances
Headphones and related listening receivers also became part of an early entertainment service. The London Electrophone Company began trading in 1895, connecting subscribers by telephone line to live performances from music halls, churches, and theatres, including Covent Garden Opera. Listeners held the receivers below the chin; this was remote access to a live event, not a portable music player. The Science Museum Group says the company ceased operating in 1925, after a history in which its audience and subscriptions ebbed at points. Science Museum Group’s Electrophone history.
When did headphones become popular?
There was no single moment when headphones became popular everywhere. The Electrophone offered a subscription-based way for some London listeners to hear live performances privately, while headsets also served work and communications. The move toward a mass-market personal listening experience came later, when portable players and lightweight headphones made it practical to take music along.

How did the Walkman change headphones?
Sony launched the Walkman in 1979 and developed lightweight headphones alongside the portable player. Together, they made private listening while moving a product experience that Sony had to introduce to a skeptical public. Sony describes using public demonstrations to show people the idea of listening on the move. Its corporate history reports more than 400 million Walkman units sold from the first model through 2019, across cassette, CD, MiniDisc, and digital flash-memory models. That is Sony’s cumulative historical total through 2019, not a current sales rate. Sony Group’s Walkman history.
Sony’s account also relates how co-founder Akio Morita backed the Walkman name: “This is something for the younger generations. If they say it’s good, then that’s that.” The quotation is attributed to Morita in Sony’s corporate history.

What came after the Walkman?
As headphone use expanded, designs moved toward smaller earpieces, noise reduction, and wireless connections. Sony’s corporate history describes the following company milestones; its “first” claims are Sony’s own, rather than universal priority claims independently established here.
- 1982: Sony says it used 16-millimeter drivers for what it calls the world’s first in-ear headphone.
- 1992: Sony says it brought its first consumer noise-cancelling headphones to market.
- 2017: Sony says it introduced wireless headphones.
These changes altered the form and convenience of listening, but the broader progression is clear: headphones moved from work and communications, to remote entertainment, to private music that could travel with the listener.
