HeadCrab is malware that Aqua Security researchers found targeting exposed Redis servers. In a report published February 1, 2023, Aqua estimated that about 1,200 servers were actively infected in the campaign it investigated, with cryptocurrency mining as the main impact it observed. That figure describes Aqua’s 2023 investigation—not the number of infected servers today.
How HeadCrab infected Redis servers
Aqua Nautilus described HeadCrab as custom malware focused on Redis, an in-memory data store. In its honeypot investigation, researchers observed attackers abuse Redis replication: an attacker-controlled master caused a target server to synchronize as a replica, then delivered a malicious Redis module and loaded it into the Redis process.
Redis is intended to run in a secure, closed network. Aqua noted that exposed instances without authentication could be accessed without authorization. The observed replication-and-module sequence explains how this campaign gained a foothold; it should not be taken to mean every Redis compromise uses the same technique.
What the malware did after gaining access
Observed use: cryptocurrency mining
Aqua’s main observed impact was resource hijacking for cryptocurrency mining. The researchers associated the activity with Monero. From an identified wallet, Aqua estimated almost $4,500 in annual profit per worker. This was an estimate based on the wallet, not audited revenue or a guarantee of what any individual infected server earned.

Broader capabilities
Aqua’s reverse engineering found capabilities beyond mining, including attacker-defined Redis commands and command execution. Those findings indicate the malware could support wider control of compromised servers; they do not establish that every capability was used on every infected host.
Stealth techniques Aqua reported
Aqua said HeadCrab ran in memory, deleted Redis logs, used Redis processes and modules, and routed communications through legitimate addresses. These techniques can complicate investigation, but they do not mean that every security product will miss an infection.

How many servers were affected—and when?
Aqua’s February 1, 2023 report estimated approximately 1,200 actively infected servers in the exposed systems it identified. The figure was a research estimate, not an independently audited census or a current prevalence count. SecurityWeek also reported the figure at the time, attributing it to Aqua.
In a January 29, 2024 follow-up, Aqua reported that an updated scan for HeadCrab 2.0 identified an additional 1,100 compromised servers. The follow-up result should not be added to the earlier estimate as if both scans measured the same population at the same time. Neither figure establishes how many servers are infected in 2026 or whether the campaign remains active now.

What changed in HeadCrab 2.0?
Aqua’s 2024 analysis described a change in how the malware handled command-and-control requests and reported a detection clue in the newer variant:

The CONFIG response difference is an Aqua-reported research finding, not a general-purpose detection recipe. Commands that alter Redis configuration can affect a live service and should only be tested by qualified operators in a controlled environment.

How Redis operators can reduce exposure
Aqua’s reporting points to reducing unauthorized access and limiting network exposure. Practical safeguards include:
- Keep Redis off the public internet where possible. Place it on a restricted network rather than exposing the service directly. If a public-facing architecture is deliberate, protect access through controls appropriate to that deployment.
- Require appropriate authentication and restrict network access. Limit which hosts and services can connect, and review access controls against the Redis version and deployment you actually operate.
- Monitor sensitive Redis activity. Investigate unexpected module loading, replication changes, unusual commands, or unexplained resource use. A single signal is not proof of HeadCrab, but unexpected changes warrant investigation.
- Review the host and surrounding network. If compromise is suspected, do not limit the investigation to Redis: Aqua advises assuming broader network compromise and initiating incident response.
What to do if a server may be compromised
- Start your incident-response process. Follow your organization’s procedures and involve qualified responders. Treat the Redis server as a possible entry point to the wider host or network, not as an isolated database problem.
- Preserve relevant evidence and assess the environment. Coordinate investigation of the Redis instance, host, and nearby network activity with responders before making changes that could affect evidence or service availability.
- Plan a safe recovery. Aqua recommends preserving a Redis database backup and migrating to a properly authorized server with traffic controls that is not directly internet-accessible where possible. Verify backup integrity and recovery steps under your organization’s procedures.
- Validate the replacement deployment. Check network exposure, authentication, and authorization before restoring service. Confirm any implementation details against current Redis documentation and the requirements of your version and architecture.
