The names are not standardized across TVs, so the visible result—and the manual for your model and input—matter more than the label.
What do HDTV zoom modes do?
A TV has to map the incoming picture to its screen. When the source and screen have different shapes, the TV can preserve the entire picture and leave unused space, stretch the image, or enlarge it until some of the image falls outside the screen.
That is why the same menu may offer several picture-size choices. Labels such as Normal, Wide, Panoramic and Zoom are examples, not universal definitions. Sony notes that “The picture size depends on the signal content.” Sony’s Help Guide describes its own options; another TV may use the same name for different behavior.
What is the difference between common modes?
| Menu label (examples) | Typical visible result | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Normal / Original | Shows the source at its original proportions. If it does not match the screen, bars remain. Sony describes sidebars around original 4:3 content in Normal mode; VIZIO’s legacy guide also describes Normal as preserving 4:3. | Preserves geometry and the complete image, but may not fill the screen. Behavior is model- and input-specific. Sony Help Guide; VIZIO SV470XVT1A user manual |
| Wide / Full / 16:9 | May scale or stretch an image to use more of the screen. VIZIO’s legacy manual describes Wide as stretching standard/full-frame material; an older LG manual describes 16:9 as resizing to fit the screen width. | Stretching can make shapes look too wide or otherwise distorted. A film wider than 16:9 can still have top and bottom bars. VIZIO SV470XVT1A user manual |
| Wide Zoom / Panoramic | Enlarges or remaps the image to reduce bars while trying to limit distortion in the center. Sony describes Wide Zoom as preserving the original picture as much as possible; VIZIO describes Panoramic as stretching the sides more than the center. | The outer edges can look unnaturally wide. The exact result depends on the TV. Sony Help Guide; VIZIO SV470XVT1A user manual |
| Zoom / Cinema Zoom | Enlarges the picture to reduce or remove bars. It crops whichever part of the image does not fit: top and bottom or the sides, depending on the source and screen proportions. | Important content—including subtitles, scores or details near an edge—may disappear. Panasonic explains that filling a 16:9 screen with wider CinemaScope material crops the sides. Panasonic FAQ |
| Auto Wide | Automatically changes the picture-size mode based on the signal or input information. | The picture may change size between programs or inputs. Sony says disabling Auto Wide can lock the selected mode; available controls depend on the TV and signal. Sony Help Guide |

Why does an HDTV have black bars?
Bars often mean the TV is showing the complete picture without changing its proportions. A 16:9 screen can show 4:3 material with bars at the sides. A film wider than 16:9 can have bars at the top and bottom. Neither is, by itself, evidence that the picture is incorrectly set.
Panasonic identifies 16:9 (1.78:1) as the HDTV widescreen ratio and gives 2.35:1 as a CinemaScope example. Because 2.35:1 is wider, fitting the whole image on a 16:9 screen leaves space above and below; zooming to fill the screen crops the sides. Panasonic’s explanation of black bars covers that tradeoff.

Why is part of the picture cut off or stretched?
- Edges or subtitles are missing: the TV may be using Zoom or another enlargement mode. Switch to Normal or Original and check whether the full frame returns.
- People or circles look too wide: a stretch mode may be changing the picture’s proportions. Try Normal or Original; avoid Wide or Full if it visibly distorts the source.
- The picture changes size between programs: Auto Wide or differences in the incoming signal may be changing the selected sizing. Check the TV’s Auto Wide setting.
- A cable or satellite box is connected: the box can have its own aspect-ratio or display-size controls. Sony advises checking the box maker’s instructions as well as the TV settings. Sony Help Guide
How should you choose a mode?
- Start with Normal or Original if available. Confirm that faces and other familiar shapes look proportionate and that you can see the full frame.
- If bars remain, decide whether keeping the entire image is more important than filling the screen. Bars can be the correct result for a source with a different aspect ratio.
- If you try Zoom, inspect all four edges, including subtitle and score areas. Return to the previous mode if useful content is cut off.
- If you try Wide Zoom or Panoramic, look especially at the left and right edges for stretching.
- If the setting is missing or behaves differently on another input, consult the model-specific TV manual and the instructions for any connected set-top box. Menu names and available modes vary by model and input.
