HDFC Bank lists savings-account interest at 2.50% per annum, calculated on daily balances and credited quarterly. Its fixed-deposit rates vary by tenure, deposit size and customer category. For deposits below ₹3 crore, the bank’s rate table effective 19 August 2026 lists 6.45% per annum for 18 months to under 21 months and 6.50% for 3 years 1 day to under 4 years 7 months. These are dated rates, not standing offers: the rate applied depends on the rate prevailing when the deposit is processed or the funds are received.
To compare the two, use the same amount and time horizon, then account for access to your money, interest payout, eligibility, account requirements and tax—not just the headline rate.
What HDFC Bank’s listed rates show
| Option | Rate and basis | What changes the applicable rate |
|---|---|---|
| Savings account | 2.50% per annum across balances, effective 24 June 2025; calculated on daily balances and credited quarterly. | The rate is stated across balances; account requirements still depend on product and location. HDFC Bank savings rates |
| Fixed deposit below ₹3 crore | Examples in HDFC Bank’s table effective 19 August 2026: 6.45% per annum for 18 months to under 21 months, and 6.50% for 3 years 1 day to under 4 years 7 months. | Tenure, deposit amount, customer category and booking date. The table has separate standard and eligible senior-citizen rates; senior-citizen rates do not apply to NRIs. HDFC Bank FD rates |
The two quoted FD rates are examples, not a complete comparison for every depositor. Select the row matching your deposit amount, tenure, residency and eligibility. HDFC says the applicable rate is the one prevailing when the deposit is processed or funds are received, so check the rate shown at booking.
Compare the same amount over the same period
A fair comparison starts with a specific principal and a time period during which you expect not to need that money. Savings interest is based on daily balances and paid quarterly; an FD is booked for a selected tenure, with the payout instruction affecting when you receive interest. A headline annual rate alone does not show the amount or timing of cash you will receive.

For an FD longer than six months, HDFC says quarterly calculation applies. If you choose monthly interest payout, the bank calculates interest for the quarter and pays it monthly at a discounted rate compared with the standard deposit rate. A periodic payout is therefore not the same as leaving interest to accumulate toward a maturity value. HDFC Bank FD details
HDFC’s FD calculations use actual days in the year: 366 in a leap year and 365 in a non-leap year. For an exact illustration, use the bank’s calculator or booking screen with your principal, dates, tenure, payout choice and applicable rate; a maturity amount cannot be inferred from the annual rate alone.

Decide how much liquidity you need
Money in a savings account remains accessible. An FD commits the selected deposit for a chosen tenure, and closing it early may change the interest calculation. If you could need the money unexpectedly, compare the cost and conditions of early closure with the value of keeping that portion readily available.
HDFC’s FD terms describe an early-withdrawal calculation based on the rate applicable on the booking date for the period the deposit actually remained with the bank, with a one-percentage-point reduction for applicable deposits. The exact treatment depends on the deposit type and terms. Domestic and NRO deposits liquidated within seven days do not earn interest. Check the terms for your specific FD before relying on its contracted maturity return. HDFC Bank FD terms

Check which rate and account conditions apply to you
For an FD, match the published rate to your deposit size, tenure and customer category. HDFC publishes separate standard and senior-citizen rates and states that the senior-citizen rates do not apply to NRIs. Confirm your eligibility and the rate displayed at booking rather than assuming a rate from a different category or date.
A savings account can also have balance conditions unrelated to its interest rate. HDFC lists these requirements for its Regular Savings Account: ₹10,000 average monthly balance for metro and urban branches, ₹5,000 for semi-urban branches, and ₹2,500 average quarterly balance for rural branches. Requirements vary by product and location, so verify the conditions for your exact account variant. HDFC Bank Regular Savings Account

Include tax in the comparison
HDFC says FD interest is taxable as income from other sources, while savings-account interest is subject to applicable tax laws. Tax treatment and any withholding depend on current rules and your circumstances. TDS is tax withheld at source; it does not, by itself, determine your final tax liability. Check current official tax guidance or consult a qualified adviser for a personal calculation. HDFC Bank tax information
