The game was made for the Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo’s only official re-release is on Nintendo Switch, inside the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. On PC, the game is reachable only through emulation, and Dolphin’s compatibility list marks the GameCube version as “Playable”. That is a community compatibility rating, not a PC port and not a guarantee for your particular computer.
Where Super Mario Sunshine officially exists
Three routes are relevant, and only the first two are Nintendo products.
| Route | What the sources support | Things to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Original GameCube release | Nintendo UK’s catalog lists the game as a Nintendo GameCube title, released in the UK on 4 October 2002. | Needs GameCube hardware and a physical copy. Condition, region and price vary by seller, and current stock was not checked. |
| Nintendo Switch: Super Mario 3D All-Stars | Nintendo’s page describes a Switch collection with Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, released 18 September 2020. | Sold for a limited time. Availability today varies by retailer. |
| PC via the Dolphin emulator | Dolphin’s compatibility list marks GameCube Super Mario Sunshine as “Playable”. | Not an official Nintendo product. Results depend on your hardware and settings. No universal system requirement or benchmark is established. |
What “Playable” on Dolphin actually means
Dolphin is an emulator, which is software that imitates a console on another device. It does not include the game. The “Playable” status is a dynamic, community-maintained entry on Dolphin’s compatibility list. It says the game can be played on Dolphin, not that it will run smoothly on any specific PC. Nintendo has not endorsed this route.
This article does not explain how to obtain game files. The sources reviewed do not settle the legal rules for creating game images across different countries, so no blanket assurance is given. Nintendo’s GameCube product page also warns that unauthorized devices or software enabling technical modification may render the game unplayable. Check the rules where you live before choosing this route.

The Switch version is not a PC port either
The Switch release is the nearest thing to an official remaster, but it runs on Nintendo’s console. In a September 2020 developer article, Nintendo European Research & Development (NERD) said that its “own Nintendo GameCube emulation technology was used in Super Mario 3D All-Stars to bring Super Mario Sunshine to Nintendo Switch.” The same article lists changes including “16:9 HD rendering, updated controller bindings for an optimal Joy-Con experience, and others”.
So Nintendo itself used emulation to bring the game to a modern platform. That is a different thing from a native PC build.

Buying the Switch collection now
Nintendo announced that the digital version of Super Mario 3D All-Stars would leave the eShop on 31 March 2021. Nintendo UK’s current page says people who already bought it digitally can still play and redownload it. Physical copies were sold while stocks lasted, so a new purchase today usually means a retailer’s remaining stock or a second-hand copy.

- You want the official experience: use the GameCube original, or the Switch collection if you can find a copy.
- You only have a PC: Dolphin is the route its compatibility list rates “Playable”, with the caveats on hardware, settings and legality above.
- You want a native PC version: none was found in Nintendo’s official sources. A new announcement could exist that those sources do not show, so check Nintendo’s own announcements.
A GameCube controller suits the original-hardware route. No specific PC adapter was verified, so none is recommended here.
