No—not from the default build. Python’s Global Interpreter Lock (GIL) is still enabled in the standard CPython build. Free-threaded CPython, which can run threads in parallel across available CPU cores, has been available as an optional build since Python 3.13 and is officially supported in Python 3.14. You must choose that build, and a program benefits only if its workload and dependencies can use it.
What changed—and what did not
CPython is making the GIL optional through a staged transition, not switching it off for everyone at once. PEP 703 initiated the work. Python 3.13 introduced a free-threaded build experimentally; Python 3.14 moved it to officially supported status. The regular GIL-enabled build remains the default. The Python Software Foundation’s Python 3.14.7 release page confirms free-threaded support in the 3.14 series.
Officially supported means the build is a supported option, not that every package, deployment environment, or Python application is ready for it. PEP 779 treats changing the default as a separate future decision, dependent on ecosystem readiness and evidence about real-world benefits and costs. The cited official material gives no committed date for that decision. Dates sketched as possible later steps in PEP 703 are not a delivery schedule.
What free-threading enables
In the usual CPython build, the GIL prevents more than one thread from executing Python bytecode at a time. A free-threaded build removes that interpreter-wide restriction, allowing threads to execute in parallel on available CPU cores. Python’s free-threading guide cautions that not all software benefits automatically: programs designed to use threads may run faster on multicore hardware, but a program does not gain parallel speed simply because you upgrade Python or add threads.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The relevant case is a workload that can divide CPU-bound work among threads and whose dependencies operate correctly without the GIL. If work cannot be parallelized effectively, or the cost of free-threading and package incompatibilities outweigh the parallel work, switching builds may not help. Measure the application you actually run rather than extrapolating from the existence of multiple cores.
Costs and performance evidence
Free-threading has overhead, and results depend on workload and hardware. The current Python guide reports average overhead on the pyperformance benchmark suite ranging from about 1% on macOS aarch64 to 8% on x86-64 Linux systems. Those are suite averages for the named platforms, not a prediction for an individual application.
PEP 779 reports a different set of pyperformance observations: a performance penalty of around 10% on linear performance, except around 3% on macOS, and about 15–20% higher memory use by geometric mean. These figures are attributed to that proposal’s measurements; they should not be combined with the documentation’s platform-specific averages into one universal estimate. Neither source supplies a general-purpose speedup figure for real applications.

For an adoption decision, compare throughput, latency, and memory use for representative workloads against the GIL-enabled build. Include startup and deployment conditions that matter to your service or application, and check whether the GIL remains disabled after imports. A favorable result from one benchmark does not establish a benefit for another workload.

Native extensions are a key compatibility risk. Some third-party C-API extension modules are not yet marked as safe for free-threading. When an unmarked extension is imported, CPython may automatically enable the GIL and print a warning. A project can therefore use a free-threaded interpreter build without actually running with the GIL disabled.
Test the complete environment, including optional dependencies and production import paths. Pure-Python tests alone do not establish that a package set containing native modules will preserve free-threading. Install and verify a free-threaded build
Python documents official macOS and Windows installer options for free-threaded builds, as well as building from source. Exact installer choices vary by platform and release, so use the instructions for the Python version and operating system you intend to deploy from the official guide. After installation, check both the build’s capability and the running process state:
-
Run
python -VVor inspectsys.versionto identify the interpreter build. The version information indicates whether it is a free-threading build.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check whether the interpreter was compiled to support free-threading with
sysconfig.get_config_var("Py_GIL_DISABLED"). A supported build does not by itself prove the GIL is currently off.Rank #4

-
Check the current process state with
sys._is_gil_enabled(). This distinguishes a free-threaded-capable build from a process in which the GIL is enabled. -
Run the check after importing your application’s dependencies, and watch for warnings about extensions that enable the GIL. A free-threaded build can run with the GIL enabled through
PYTHON_GILor the-X giloption, and incompatible extension imports can also re-enable it.
Thread safety still requires care
Free-threaded CPython uses internal locks for built-in types such as dict, list, and set to protect concurrent modifications, with behavior intended to be similar to the GIL-enabled build. That protection is not a promise that arbitrary multi-step operations are atomic or that all application code is thread-safe.

Use explicit synchronization, such as threading.Lock, when correctness depends on coordinating access to shared state. Do not rely on implementation-level internal locks as a substitute for designing and testing thread-safe operations.
What the extension ABI change means
PEP 703 describes the initial --disable-gil build as ABI-incompatible with the standard build, which can require extension authors to produce separate builds. PEP 803 proposes abi3t, a Stable ABI variant intended for free-threaded CPython 3.15 and later. That proposal describes a compatibility route; it does not mean existing extensions already support free-threading. Check the package’s stated support and available builds for the interpreter you plan to use.
When to try it
-
Consider a trial if your application has CPU-bound work that can use threads and you can test its full dependency set.
-
Benchmark before adopting if throughput, latency, or memory limits are important; benchmark both builds under representative conditions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Keep the standard build for now if required native extensions are incompatible, imports turn the GIL back on, or your workload does not benefit in measurement.
-
Plan for operational differences by checking installer or source-build availability and ensuring your development, test, and production environments use the intended build.
