Neither HarmonyOS nor Android is automatically the better fit for every phone user. The answer depends on the specific HarmonyOS generation or Android release, the exact device and region, and whether your essential apps are available and work as you need them. Huawei’s statement that some HarmonyOS 2 devices could run existing Android apps does not establish Android-app support on HarmonyOS NEXT. And the privacy controls documented for either platform are feature descriptions, not proof that one is categorically more private.
At a glance: what the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
| Question | What the documented evidence says | What you must check for your device |
|---|---|---|
| Will my apps work? | Huawei says HarmonyOS 2 allowed existing Android apps to run on some HarmonyOS devices. Huawei’s developer materials distinguish Android APK packages from native HarmonyOS APP packages. Android’s compatibility guidance says app behavior can vary with the platform version and app target SDK. | Whether each essential app is available for your device and region, how it is distributed, and whether it depends on services or features your configuration provides. |
| How long will updates arrive? | Huawei and Android developer guidance describe platform changes that app makers may need to accommodate. Huawei announced a HarmonyOS 7 developer beta in June 2026. | The exact model, regional variant, current build, delivery schedule, and written security-support commitment. The cited platform and beta materials do not establish a universal handset-support term. |
| Which has better privacy? | Huawei and Android document permission, activity, and data-selection controls for specified versions and supported devices. | Which controls are present on your device and software version, what exceptions apply, and how apps use the data they receive. The documented features do not establish an overall privacy winner. |
App compatibility depends on the HarmonyOS generation and the exact app
“HarmonyOS” covers different generations and configurations. A compatibility statement about one generation should not be assumed to apply to another.
HarmonyOS 2: Huawei documented Android-app support on some devices
In a Huawei Support answer about updating from EMUI to HarmonyOS 2, Huawei said that HarmonyOS 2 allowed existing Android apps to run on some HarmonyOS devices. The wording is limited to that generation and those devices. It does not promise that every Android app works, that a particular app is available in every country, or that the same support applies to HarmonyOS NEXT.
HarmonyOS NEXT: check the app’s package and distribution route
Huawei’s developer guide describes HarmonyOS NEXT devices using HarmonyOS 7.0 and API version 26.0.0. Huawei’s AppGallery review overview distinguishes several package types, including APK for Android apps and APP for native HarmonyOS apps. That distinction matters: the package an app developer supplies and the way the app is distributed are part of the compatibility question. These documents do not confirm the availability of any particular app on a specific device or in a specific market.

For a banking app, messaging service, workplace tool, or other essential app, look for an explicit listing for your exact device and region. Check whether the app requires particular platform services, sign-in methods, or supporting apps. Do not infer that an app will work merely because it has an Android version, or that it will not work merely because its store listing is unclear.
Android compatibility also changes by release and app
Android’s official app-compatibility guidance describes compatibility as an app running properly on a particular platform version. It distinguishes behavior changes that affect all apps from changes that depend on the app’s target SDK. The guide identifies Android 16 as API level 36. That is useful context for developers and for evaluating an app’s support, but it is not a guarantee that every app will behave correctly immediately after a phone receives an Android update.

Can you use Google apps on HarmonyOS?
The cited documentation does not establish Google-app or Google-service availability across HarmonyOS generations, devices, and regions. Verify the exact Google app or service you need against the exact device configuration; do not treat the HarmonyOS 2 Android-app statement as an answer for HarmonyOS NEXT or for Google services specifically.
Updates: platform releases are not the same as phone support promises
An operating-system release can change APIs or app behavior, which may require developers to adapt and test their apps. Huawei’s HarmonyOS NEXT guide recommends reviewing API changes, adapting applications, and verifying them on both old and new system versions before an AppGallery release. Android’s compatibility guidance similarly describes platform behavior changes and testing considerations. Neither type of developer guidance tells a phone owner how many years a particular handset will receive system or security updates.

What the HarmonyOS 7 beta announcement means
Huawei announced a HarmonyOS 7 developer beta in June 2026. The announcement describes beta features and notes that actual device, service, and interface support can vary; some features require an over-the-air update. A developer-beta announcement is not an all-country consumer rollout schedule, a complete list of eligible retail devices, or a security-update duration commitment.
What to verify before relying on update support
- Exact model and regional variant: support can differ by device configuration, sales market, and carrier variant.
- Current software build: identify the installed OS generation and build rather than relying on the platform family name alone.
- Update availability: check the maker’s current information for that model and region; a platform announcement alone does not establish when a particular phone receives it.
- Security-support term: look for a written, model-specific statement covering security updates. The cited sources do not provide a universal support-duration comparison for HarmonyOS and Android phones.
Privacy controls: compare specific features, not platform slogans
The available documentation describes tools for seeing or limiting certain app access. It does not provide a comparable independent measure of real-world privacy outcomes, so it cannot support a numeric score or a categorical claim that one platform is more private.

HarmonyOS 4.2 and 4.3
Huawei Support says supported HarmonyOS 4.2 and 4.3 devices provide a Privacy Center with permission information, app privacy-behavior logs, and notices for sensitive permissions. Huawei says those logs are analyzed and displayed on the device rather than uploaded to the cloud. Its guidance also notes that some system apps may not show permission reminders or privacy suggestions. These statements apply to the specified versions and supported devices, not to every HarmonyOS device.
HarmonyOS NEXT
Huawei’s 2023–2024 Consumer Business Sustainability Progress Report describes HarmonyOS NEXT examples of more selective data access: an app can be given access to a photo selected by the user rather than the entire gallery, and the report gives examples of one-time access for other data. This is Huawei’s description of the platform’s controls, not independent comparative testing.

Android
Android’s official privacy and security guidance documents a Privacy Dashboard, camera and microphone access indicators, clipboard-read notices, and automatic permission revocation for unused apps on supported versions and devices. Android 16 guidance describes selected photo and video access for apps targeting API level 36. It also describes a phased local-network-permission initiative: the current opt-in phase is intended to let developers prepare, while enforcement is planned for a later Android release. That guidance does not say the permission is already mandatory for every app or device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for your own use
- Write down the apps you cannot do without. Include work, banking, travel, messaging, authentication, and accessibility apps, not just the ones you use most often.
- Identify the exact device and software generation. Record the model, region or carrier variant, current OS version, and whether the device runs HarmonyOS 2, HarmonyOS NEXT, or a specified Android release.
- Confirm each app’s availability and requirements. Check the app’s official listing or developer information for that configuration. Where distribution is unclear, ask the developer rather than assuming package compatibility.
- Check update commitments separately from OS features. Find the device maker’s model- and region-specific information for security updates and rollout eligibility; a developer guide or beta announcement is not a handset support promise.
- Compare the privacy controls actually present. Check the device’s settings for permission history, notices, selected-item access, and any stated exceptions. A feature’s existence does not by itself tell you how an individual app handles data.
That device-specific check is more reliable than choosing from a blanket “HarmonyOS versus Android” verdict: app support, update delivery, and privacy controls vary with software generation, device, app, and region.
