Neither is universally safer: they address different risks. A hardware wallet is a physical device that signs transactions while keeping its key away from an internet-connected computer during ordinary signing. Multisig is a wallet policy that requires a threshold of separate keys to authorize a transaction. You can use a hardware wallet as one signer in a multisig setup, combining both approaches.

Choose based on the threat you are trying to reduce—and whether you can reliably manage the keys, backups, and recovery process. Multisig can limit the damage from one compromised key, but its extra operational complexity can also create new ways to lose access.

Hardware wallet and multisig are different security layers

A hardware wallet protects a private key by keeping it on a physical signing device rather than exposing it to an internet-connected computer during ordinary transaction signing. A single-key hardware wallet still relies on that key: if it is lost, damaged, or compromised, the outcome depends on its backup and recovery arrangements.

Multisig—short for multi-signature—sets a rule that multiple distinct keys must approve a transaction. In a 2-of-3 setup, for example, any two of three keys are required. One key by itself cannot authorize a transfer. The keys can be held in different forms or locations, including on hardware wallets.

Casa Support describes its own example as a 2-of-3 vault with a mobile key, a hardware key, and a service-held recovery key: any two are needed to send. That is a Casa configuration, not a universal multisig design. (Casa Support: What is a multisig vault?)

How the approaches compare

Question Hardware wallet alone Multisig wallet
What is it? A physical device that signs using a private key. An authorization policy requiring a threshold of separate keys.
What if one key is compromised? A single-key wallet depends on that key and its backups; device isolation is intended to reduce exposure during signing. If the threshold is greater than one, one key alone is insufficient to authorize a transaction.
What if a key is lost? Recovery commonly depends on the device backup, such as its seed phrase. A threshold may let the remaining keys move funds and replace a lost signer, if the needed wallet information is available.
What must you manage? Typically fewer devices and signing steps, plus the key backup. Multiple signers, their locations, backups, coordination, and wallet configuration information.
What determines compatibility? The device and its companion software, asset, and wallet. The wallet implementation, asset, and supported signers and devices.

The comparison is about risk design, not a contest with a proven universal winner. The cited materials do not establish an independently published head-to-head statistic for security outcomes. A 2-of-3 threshold is an example configuration, not evidence of a measured theft or loss rate.

When a hardware wallet alone may fit better

A hardware wallet may be the more manageable choice if your main concern is keeping a signing key off an internet-connected computer and you can protect its backup. It usually involves fewer moving parts than coordinating several signers. That simplicity is useful only if you understand how the wallet is restored and keep its backup safe.

A seed phrase is sensitive: someone who obtains it may be able to recreate the key. It can also help restore a device if it is lost or replaced. Casa documents different backup approaches for its own vault configurations, including an optional mostly seedless approach for certain three-key setups; this is not a general instruction to destroy or retain every seed phrase. When multisig may fit better

Multisig may be useful when you want one compromised or lost key to be insufficient on its own to spend the funds, and you can maintain the other signers and the information needed to operate the wallet. The protection depends on the actual arrangement: keys must be meaningfully separated, the threshold must match your needs, and enough keys must remain usable.

For example, a 2-of-3 setup can tolerate one lost key if the other two remain accessible and the wallet configuration information needed to transact is preserved. Depending on the wallet implementation, the remaining keys may be used to move funds and replace the lost signer. Trezor’s educational guide describes this recovery possibility while noting that managing multiple keys adds complexity and risk if handled poorly. Plan recovery before choosing a setup

Recovery is not automatic just because a wallet uses multiple keys. Before moving funds, make a plan that answers these questions:

  • How many keys can be lost? Know the threshold and how many signers can become unavailable before funds are inaccessible.
  • Where are the signers and backups? Plan locations and access so one incident does not take out the keys you need—or expose enough keys to meet the spending threshold.
  • What wallet information must be preserved? Confirm what the specific wallet requires to recognize and use its multisig arrangement.
  • How will a lost signer be replaced? Understand the recovery and key-rotation process for the implementation you chose.
  • Can someone authorized follow the plan? Consider whether a family member or business partner can find the right information and carry out the steps if you cannot.

A seed phrase can make restoring a key easier, but anyone who finds a usable copy may be able to recreate that key. Decide how to handle seeds according to the specific wallet’s documented design and your recovery needs; do not assume one backup rule fits every setup.

Check asset, device, and service compatibility

Support varies by wallet software, asset, device model, and setup. Do not assume that because a device supports an asset on its own, it can serve as a signer for every multisig wallet holding that asset. Check compatibility for the complete combination before setting up or transferring funds.

Casa’s device guidance, updated June 26, 2026, lists Trezor Safe 3 among devices compatible with its vault; this demonstrates Casa compatibility, not compatibility with all multisig wallets or a guarantee of current availability. (Casa Support: Which hardware device should I use with Casa?) Casa also documents a BTC-specific option to replace its mobile key with a second hardware key in a more advanced three-key vault configuration; its setup article says that option was not then available for its ETH vault. Verify current support for the relevant asset and configuration before choosing. (Casa Support: Choosing your 3-key vault setup)

A service-assisted multisig arrangement can provide setup or recovery support, but its role depends on the provider’s design. In Casa’s cited example, the service holds one key in a 2-of-3 vault; it cannot send alone because two keys are required. Do not assume another provider holds a key or offers the same recovery model. (Casa Support: What is a multisig vault?)

Choose by threat model and operating capacity

  • Prefer a simpler arrangement if multiple signers, backups, and recovery details would be difficult to maintain consistently.
  • Consider multisig if reducing the authority of any one key is important and you can preserve and use the remaining signers and configuration information.
  • Combine them if the wallet supports your asset and devices: a hardware wallet can serve as one multisig signer, rather than being an alternative to multisig.
  • Compare service-assisted and self-managed options by checking who holds each key, what that party can do alone, and how recovery works.

Unchained’s operational-security guidance discusses device and seed-phrase threat models from a provider perspective, rather than presenting a controlled comparison of security outcomes. (Unchained: Operational Security Guide) Casa likewise describes its Bitcoin multisig service and vault in its own product materials; its design should not be generalized to other providers.
