A hardware wallet keeps an individual signing key offline; a multisig wallet requires a preset number of separate keys to approve an action. For personal funds, an offline signer is a practical defense against online key theft. For shared funds or a treasury, multisig can prevent one signer from acting alone. You can combine them by using separate hardware wallets as multisig signers—but transaction review, recovery planning, and smart-contract risks still matter.
What each wallet protects against
Hardware wallet: keep the signing key offline
A hardware wallet stores a private key on a dedicated device and uses it to sign transactions without exposing the key to the connected computer. Ethereum.org says this can reduce hacking risk even if an attacker controls that computer. It does not make an unsafe transaction safe: you still have to decide what to approve. Ethereum.org’s wallet guide advises checking transaction messages and the exact recipient address, and notes that Ethereum transactions are irreversible.
Multisig: require more than one key
An Ethereum multisig wallet sets an authorization threshold: a configured number of separate keys must approve an action. For example, a 2-of-3 setup requires two of three signers. Ledger describes its Enterprise Multisig product as built on Safe, an on-chain smart-contract protocol. Ethereum.org’s account-abstraction overview also describes smart-contract wallet policies such as backup keys, key replacement, multiple signatures for high-value transactions, and restrictions to trusted addresses.
Multisig changes how many approvals are needed; it does not, by itself, keep any signer’s key offline. Conversely, an individual hardware wallet isolates a key but does not require another person’s approval.

How the protections compare
| Concern | Hardware wallet alone | Multisig |
|---|---|---|
| Online theft of a key | Offline key storage can reduce exposure if the connected computer is compromised. The user must still verify what the device is signing. Ethereum.org | A threshold does not necessarily keep keys offline. Use secure signers; a multisig threshold can prevent one key from acting alone when more than one signature is required. Ledger |
| One signer compromised | If the wallet relies on one key, compromise of that key can put funds at risk. | A threshold above one can limit what a single compromised key can authorize, provided other signers are genuinely separate and independently secured. This is an implementation principle, not a guarantee. |
| Misleading signing request | The device does not automatically determine whether a transaction is malicious; review the details before signing. Ethereum.org | More approvals do not ensure that signers understand a request. Each signer needs to review it. The Ethereum Foundation identifies blind signing as a significant user-experience security problem. Ethereum Foundation, August 20, 2025 |
| Lost or unavailable key | Access depends on safely protecting the wallet’s recovery phrase. | The threshold must remain achievable with the signers who are still available. Recovery and coordination can be difficult if a signer loses access or cannot participate. Ledger |
| Contract and configuration risk | A hardware device does not add multisig contract rules. | A contract-based multisig adds smart-contract and configuration considerations. Ethereum.org lists smart-contract vulnerabilities among security concerns; this does not establish the risk profile of any particular deployment. Ethereum.org’s smart-contract security guide |
| Speed and coordination | A single signer can act without collecting multiple approvals. | Signers must coordinate and reach the threshold, which can slow transactions. Ledger |
There is no comparative loss-rate study in the cited sources that establishes one approach as safer overall. The practical result depends on the threat you are addressing and how well the keys, approvals, and recovery process are managed.
When a hardware wallet is the better fit
For someone managing personal funds, a hardware wallet is a straightforward baseline against theft of a key through an online computer. Its value depends on protecting the recovery phrase as carefully as the device itself. A stolen or exposed phrase can undermine the benefit of keeping the key offline.

- Read transaction details and verify the recipient address before signing.
- Do not treat a hardware wallet as protection against phishing or a transaction you approve without understanding.
When multisig is the better fit
Multisig is useful when funds are shared or when a second-person approval rule is important. A threshold such as 2-of-3 means no single signer can authorize a transaction alone, but the arrangement only works if the signers and their keys are managed separately and enough remain available to meet the threshold.
- Choose a threshold that balances protection with the possibility that a signer is unavailable.
- Assign signers who can review proposals and coordinate when needed.
- Plan and test recovery before depositing significant funds; do not rely on a threshold you cannot meet if a key is lost.
Can hardware wallets and multisig be combined?
Yes. Separate hardware wallets can serve as signers for an Ethereum multisig, combining offline key storage with a multiple-approval rule. Ledger’s Safe explainer describes using multiple signatories, including one controlled by a Ledger signer. Ledger’s Safe and multisig guide and its Enterprise Multisig page describe product-specific capabilities. Check current device and network compatibility for the exact wallet and setup you intend to use; support varies by product and model.

For higher-value arrangements, combining the approaches can address both online key exposure and reliance on one signer. It does not eliminate mistaken approvals, poor recovery planning, or contract risks.
Transaction review is still essential
A hardware device or multisig threshold cannot substitute for understanding the transaction. Ethereum.org recommends reading transaction details before signing, and the Ethereum Foundation has highlighted blind signing as a major UX-security issue. Its May 12, 2026 clear-signing statement calls for “What You See Is What You Sign” and clear signing by default. Ethereum Foundation, “Clear Signing: Making Transaction Approvals Safer on Ethereum”

Before approving, inspect the displayed transaction details and recipient, and make sure the request matches the action you intend. In a multisig, each signer should review the proposal rather than assume another signer has validated it.

Multisig adds setup and coordination work. Fees depend on the wallet, network, and action; they are not one universal cost of Ethereum multisig. Ledger’s Enterprise Multisig page, accessed October 7, 2026, says submitted proposals and signatures do not incur its listed network gas charges, while execution and on-chain changes do. The same vendor page lists its own Ethereum service fees: a $10 flat fee for certain governance actions and a 0.05% transfer fee capped at $5,000 per transaction, in addition to network gas. These are Ledger product terms, not general Ethereum fees, and may change. Ledger Enterprise Multisig

Which should you choose?
- Personal funds: Start with a hardware wallet if your main concern is keeping a private key away from an online computer. Protect the recovery phrase and review every transaction.
- Shared funds or a treasury: Consider multisig when no single person should be able to move funds alone. Select a workable threshold, independent signers, and a tested recovery plan.
- Higher-value funds: Consider hardware wallets as separate multisig signers if you need both offline key storage and multiple approvals. Verify the exact wallet, device, network, and recovery process.
