To prevent a spreadsheet paste from creating an unwanted empty item, clean the pasted text before splitting it—and choose a cleanup rule that preserves any blank rows your users intend to keep. If paste should go where the caret is, insert at the textarea’s selection range rather than appending with +=.

Why an extra empty item appears

Splitting text on n creates an empty final entry when the text ends with a newline. For example, "onentwon".split("n") includes an empty string after two. But the clipboard payload may not be the only source: whitespace between a textarea’s opening and closing tags is part of its initial value. If the textarea markup starts with a newline, that can create an empty item independently of what was pasted.

The original discussion describes both issues: the pasted text and the textarea’s existing contents must be considered separately. SitePoint forum discussion

Choose what counts as an unwanted ending

There is no universal way to tell whether identical trailing line breaks represent an accidental clipboard terminator or intentional blank rows. Decide the application’s rule based on the input it supports, and check representative clipboard data from the spreadsheets your users use.

Cleanup rule Effect Tradeoff
trimEnd() Removes all trailing whitespace, including spaces and line breaks. Simple, but also removes intentional trailing spaces or blank rows.
Remove a defined terminal line ending Removes only the ending your application specifies, such as one final LF or CRLF sequence. Preserves other trailing whitespace, but you must define whether one or multiple terminal line endings count as accidental.

The forum suggests trimEnd() as one possible policy; it is not limited to newlines. Apply it only if removing all trailing whitespace from each pasted payload matches the intended behavior. SitePoint forum discussion

If your input may contain Windows-style CRLF endings, account for both carriage return and line feed when splitting or removing a terminal ending. Do not assume every spreadsheet produces the same clipboard serialization.

Insert pasted text at the caret

Use the paste event’s clipboard data, then replace the current selection with the cleaned text. This inserts at the caret when nothing is selected and replaces the selected range otherwise:

const textarea = document.getElementById("post-text");

textarea.addEventListener("paste", (e) => {
  e.preventDefault();
  const pasted = e.clipboardData.getData("text");
  const cleaned = pasted.trimEnd(); // Use only if all trailing whitespace should be removed.
  const start = textarea.selectionStart;
  const end = textarea.selectionEnd;
  textarea.setRangeText(cleaned, start, end, "end");
});

For a narrower rule, replace the trimEnd() line with cleanup that removes only the terminal line ending your application defines. The example uses the paste event’s own clipboard data; it does not write to or clear the system clipboard.

By contrast, textarea.value += pasted appends to the end of the field. It does not insert at the caret or replace a selected range. The SitePoint thread describes using selectionStart and selectionEnd to preserve the text before and after the selection when pasting in place. SitePoint forum discussion

Split the resulting text into rows

Once the textarea contains the text under your chosen cleanup policy, split it using a line-ending-aware expression if CRLF and LF are both possible:

const rows = textarea.value.split(/r?n/);

This handles the common LF and CRLF forms, but does not decide whether trailing empty rows should be kept. That decision belongs to your input policy: removing all trailing whitespace can erase them, while preserving the payload leaves the resulting empty entries available to your application.

Check the surrounding implementation

  • Start with the intended initial value. If the textarea should be empty, write it without whitespace or a newline between its tags.
  • Register the listener once. Add the handler during setup, not every time a function opens a dialog; repeated registration can cause one paste to be processed multiple times. A related SitePoint thread explains that addEventListener adds a listener rather than replacing an existing one. SitePoint forum discussion
  • Use the event passed to the handler. Read clipboard text from that paste event’s clipboardData, rather than referencing a different event variable.
  • Render pasted values as text. If rows are later displayed on a page, avoid concatenating untrusted pasted strings into HTML.
