A current BIS hallmark on gold jewellery has three parts: the BIS logo, a purity mark showing caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. You can check the HUID through the official BIS Care app’s Verify HUID feature. A magnifier helps you read a tiny stamp; it does not authenticate the code or prove the gold’s purity.
What the BIS hallmark marks mean
BIS defines hallmarking as the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in an article. On HUID-era gold jewellery, the hallmark comprises three marks:
- BIS logo: identifies the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmark.
- Purity mark: states the gold grade in caratage and fineness.
- HUID: a six-character alphanumeric code unique to the hallmarked item and traceable through BIS.
Caratage and fineness express the stated grade in different ways. BIS lists these gold grades under IS 1417:2016:

These are grades, not a ranking of what every buyer should choose. Compare the mark with the grade stated for the particular item. BIS introduced HUID on 1 July 2021; see its Hallmarking FAQs for the hallmark description and grades.

How to check a gold hallmark and HUID number
- Inspect the article. Look for the BIS logo, purity mark and six-character HUID. Because the stamp can be very small, a 10x jeweller’s loupe may help make it legible. BIS consumer guidance says a jeweller should have a magnifying glass of at least 10x to show the hallmark.
- Verify the HUID. Open the official BIS Care app and select Verify HUID. BIS describes this feature as a way to verify HUID-marked hallmarked jewellery, including before purchase. The app is listed on the BIS Apps page.
- Check every item and component. For a pair, check both pieces. Check detachable parts separately too; BIS consumer guidance says each piece in a pair and each detachable part should carry a hallmark. See the Common Consumer Hallmarking FAQs.
- Seek a purity test if needed. If you still doubt the mark or the actual purity, ask about chargeable testing at a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. BIS says consumers can submit jewellery or a sample and receive an assay report identifying marks on the article. Details are on BIS’s Consumer Protection page.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you

What if the marked purity is lower than promised?
BIS states that if hallmarked jewellery is found to have less purity than marked, the customer is entitled to compensation calculated at twice the amount of the purity shortfall for the article’s weight, plus testing charges. The calculation and complaint process for an individual case depend on the applicable BIS guidance. Consult the current BIS Consumer Protection information before making a claim.
Does every gold article have to be hallmarked?
Do not assume that every gold article everywhere is covered by mandatory hallmarking. BIS rules include amendments and exemptions, and coverage can depend on the applicable order. The BIS order index lists amendments dated 2 March 2026, 28 April 2026 and 3 August 2026; the page was last updated 1 September 2026. Check the latest Mandatory Hallmarking Order for current district coverage and exemptions before relying on a general rule. BIS jeweller guidance lists exemptions that include articles under two grams, some special-category jewellery and jewellers below a specified annual-turnover threshold; confirm the precise conditions in the current order.
