Hall-effect switches sense a magnet moving past a sensor; optical switches sense light with a photosensor. Either approach can support adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger in particular keyboards, so the technology label alone does not tell you which keyboard is faster or better. Compare the exact model’s features, software, compatibility, and measured performance.
How Hall-effect and optical switches detect a press
Hall-effect: a magnet and a PCB sensor
A Hall-effect switch places a magnet in the moving stem. A Hall sensor on the keyboard’s printed circuit board (PCB) detects changes in the magnetic field as the key travels. A keyboard designed to read that changing signal can estimate how far the key has moved, rather than only reporting a single on/off press.
For example, Wooting describes its Lekker switches this way and documents analog input across a 0.1–4.0 mm range on the Two HE. That range applies to this named keyboard, not all Hall-effect switches. Wooting Two HE product information.
Optical: a light source and photosensor
An optical switch uses light and a photosensor, but “optical” covers more than one design. In a conventional optical switch, the stem interrupts a light beam and the interruption registers actuation. In an analog optical design, the amount of light reaching a sensor can vary with stem position, allowing the keyboard to infer travel.

- Tip: The magnetic switch is designed for magnetic keyboards (Hall effect keyboards), not for mechanical keyboards.
- Experience the Next Generation of Magnetic Switches: The Creamy Jade magnetic switch is a true blessing for Hall Effect keyboard enthusiasts. Designed as a linear Hall Effect switch for mainstream HE (magnetic) gaming keyboards, it delivers an incredibly smooth and responsive typing experience. Factory pre-lubed, it not only produces a deeply satisfying “thock” sound but also completely eliminates any scratchiness or gritty feel. Paired with a 20mm long spring, the rebound is quicker and crisper, making every keystroke feel sharp and decisive.
- Precision Engineered Specifications: With an initial force of 30gf (min) and an end force of 55gf (max), and a total travel of 3.50±0.1mm. The initial magnetic flux is 95+15GS, and the bottom magnetic flux is 580+50GS. This force range ensures a light, agile feel during high-speed operation while delivering just the right amount of feedback at bottom-out, effectively reducing finger fatigue after prolonged use. The well-designed gradient between initial and bottom magnetic flux not only guarantees consistent triggering but also gives the switch its distinctive “thocky” deep sound profile.
- Factory Lubed for out of the box smoothness: Factory pre-lubed delivers a silky smooth feel right out of the box, while tight manufacturing tolerances minimize stem wobble for consistent and stable keystrokes. Built-in light diffuser enhances RGB illumination for a vibrant keyboard lighting effect. The long-stroke, high-quality spring provides a fast and crisp rebound. Whether for competitive gaming or daily typing, this magnetic switch offers a premium experience that is stable, smooth, low-noise, and wonderfully responsive.
- Built to Last: Rated for 100 million keystroke cycles, these switches are highly durable. Premium materials: POM stem for self-lubricating smoothness, PC upper case for excellent light diffusion, and PA66 bottom case for structural stability. The durable construction also contributes to a clean, satisfying sound profile that will elevate your typing experience.
Razer describes its Analog Optical Gen-2 design as using infrared light received by a PCB phototransistor, with the stem controlling how much light passes. Its Huntsman V3 Pro line is an example of analog optical switches; this description should not be assumed to apply identically to every optical keyboard. Razer Analog Optical Switch technology.
What the sensing difference means in use
| Question | What to check | What the mechanism tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Can I adjust actuation? | Whether the exact keyboard offers adjustable actuation, its stated range, and whether adjustment is per key. | Hall-effect and analog optical designs can both offer it; conventional optical switches may simply register a beam interruption. |
| Does it support Rapid Trigger? | Whether the keyboard and its software support it, how sensitivity is configured, and whether settings are per key. | Rapid Trigger depends on how the keyboard reads and processes key movement, not on the sensor label alone. |
| Can I swap in another switch? | The exact switch models approved for the keyboard’s PCB. | Hall-effect and optical switches are not automatically interchangeable; sensor and circuit-board designs differ. |
| Will it work in my games? | Game and operating-system support for analog keyboard input, if that feature matters to you. | Analog output is a keyboard feature, but games and platforms do not all handle it the same way. |
| Which one is faster? | The model tested, the measured response interval, test conditions, and whether results are independently verified. | The sensing principle by itself does not establish a universal speed ranking. |
Adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger
Adjustable actuation
Adjustable actuation lets you choose how far a key must travel before a press registers. Razer specifies an adjustable 0.1–4.0 mm range for Analog Optical Gen-2 switches in the Huntsman V3 Pro line. Wooting documents a 0.1–4.0 mm analog input range for the Two HE’s Lekker switches. These are manufacturer specifications for those products, not category-wide limits. Rapid Trigger
With a fixed reset point, a key must rise to a set position before it can register another press. Rapid Trigger can instead respond to the key’s movement direction: a key may reset as it begins to rise and register again when pressed down, according to the keyboard’s sensitivity settings. This can be useful for repeated inputs in games, but its implementation and controls differ by model.
Wooting says Rapid Trigger is available on supported Hall-effect Lekker and older Flaretech optical keyboards. It notes that Flaretech support is less flexible and does not provide per-key settings on those older boards. SteelSeries likewise describes supported Apex Pro keyboards as resetting once a key starts lifting. Check the support page and software options for the exact keyboard before relying on a particular control. Wooting: What is the Rapid Trigger feature?; SteelSeries: What is Rapid Trigger?.

Compatibility: switches are not automatically interchangeable
A switch has to match the keyboard’s PCB and sensing components. Wooting explicitly says its Lekker Hall-effect switches and Flaretech optical switches cannot be swapped between the respective boards because each needs a different circuit board with specific sensor components. Before buying replacement switches, consult the manufacturer’s compatibility list for your exact keyboard; matching the physical shape alone is not enough. Wooting: Can I install other switches on the Wooting Two HE?.

Razer reports a 1.7 ms average response time for its Huntsman V3 Pro testing and presents its calibrated analog optical switches as providing consistent sensing. Those are manufacturer claims for a named product and test, not an independent head-to-head result covering all optical and Hall-effect keyboards. The available product information does not establish that either technology is universally faster, more accurate, or more reliable.

How to choose between a Hall-effect and optical keyboard
- For adjustable actuation or Rapid Trigger: Find a model that documents the feature and its adjustment range. Both Hall-effect and analog optical keyboards can offer these functions.
- For replacement-switch flexibility: Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact board before purchasing. Do not infer compatibility from the switch technology name.
- For analog game input: Confirm that your games and operating system support the keyboard’s analog output. Wooting says its analog movement feature on Linux and macOS is limited to games supporting DirectInput. Wooting: Does the Analog input work with all games?
- For a speed comparison: Look for results measured under comparable conditions and note whether they come from a manufacturer or an independent test.
- For everyday typing and gaming: Compare the full keyboard—key feel, layout, software, supported features, and your intended use—not just the sensor.
