On a DualShock 4, joystick input and controller vibration are separate functions. A Hall-effect replacement may change how the stick is sensed, but the available documentation does not establish that a particular module fits every DS4 revision, prevents drift permanently, or improves vibration.
What Hall effect means for a PS4 joystick
A Hall-effect sensor detects changes in a magnetic field to determine the joystick’s position. That makes it an input-sensing technology: the stick reports movement to the console. The DualShock 4’s vibration is an output feature, produced separately by motors inside the controller.
Sony’s DualShock 4 documents describe vibration but do not identify the stock joystick sensor as Hall effect. Sony’s PlayStation 5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020, distinguishes traditional rumble—two small spinning motors—from the DualSense’s dual actuators. That terminology does not mean the DualShock 4 uses Hall-effect sticks or has DualSense-style haptics.
Would a Hall-effect stick improve DualShock 4 vibration?
No evidence in the available sources shows that replacing a joystick changes the DS4’s vibration function. A replacement concerns how stick position is sensed; it does not, by itself, replace the controller’s vibration hardware or alter a game’s vibration settings.

To check the existing vibration setting on PS4, open Settings > Devices > Controllers and make sure Enable Vibration is on. Sony notes that the controller will not vibrate when this setting is off, even if a game requests vibration (PS4 Settings: Controllers). A Hall-effect joystick is therefore not a fix for disabled rumble or a way to add DualSense haptics.
Can you install one, and will it stop stick drift?
Hall-effect joystick replacement is discussed as a DualShock 4 modification in a community thread. That discussion is not proof of compatibility across controller revisions, measured drift reduction, or long-term performance. The sources available do not verify a specific Hall-effect module or establish that it will permanently prevent drift.

Fit depends on the exact controller and board revision, and replacement alone should not be treated as a guaranteed repair. Before buying, verify the seller’s documentation for the specific model and check board fit, physical dimensions, electrical compatibility, calibration requirements, and whether original touch-related functions are retained. Identify the DS4 revision before considering repair
Read the model number on the label on the back of the controller before ordering parts. iFixit’s community-contributed joystick replacement guide demonstrates work on CUH-ZCT1U and directs readers with a second-generation CUH-ZCT2U to the corresponding guides. iFixit also lists JDM board families for CUH-ZCT2 controllers (DualShock 4 device guides). A listing or guide for one revision should not be assumed to fit another.

Try basic troubleshooting before soldering
- Check the model label. Note the complete CUH-ZCT model number from the controller’s rear label so you can identify the appropriate troubleshooting and repair information.
- Reset the controller. Follow Sony’s DualShock 4 troubleshooting and reset steps, then reconnect and test it. Resetting is an initial troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed cure for a worn or damaged joystick.
- Decide whether board-level repair is appropriate. If the problem remains and you are considering a joystick replacement, confirm the part matches your exact revision and that you can perform the required soldering—or use a repair service.
What joystick replacement involves
The DS4 joystick module is soldered to the controller board, so replacing it is not a simple plug-in swap. iFixit’s guide says a soldering station is required and warns that parts and procedure may vary by model. Board-level soldering and desoldering require care; if you do not already have the equipment and skills, a reputable repair service is the safer option.
Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller Instruction Manual for the CUH-ZCT series (2016) warns, “The vibration function of this product may aggravate injuries,” and instructs users not to disassemble or modify the product. Consider that warning before opening the controller.
