Haiku is a free, open-source desktop operating system for personal computing, inspired by BeOS. Its distinctive, integrated desktop and BeOS lineage make it interesting to explore, but the latest release located here—R1/beta6, published August 26, 2026—is still beta software. Try it in a virtual machine before considering a hardware installation, and do not rely on it as a risk-free replacement for a production system.

What is Haiku OS?

Haiku is an independent open-source operating system project aimed at personal computers. The project describes it as inspired by BeOS and lists goals such as sensible defaults, concise code, and a unified desktop environment. It is a complete desktop OS rather than a Linux distribution.

Haiku’s project began as OpenBeOS on August 18, 2001, and adopted the Haiku name in 2004. It added 64-bit support in 2013 and integrated its package management system that October. The project’s release history includes R1 Beta 1 in September 2018, Beta 2 in June 2020, and Beta 3 in July 2021. See the Haiku project history.

What can you actually do with Haiku OS?

You can use Haiku as a desktop environment and install available applications through HaikuDepot, its included software installation app. The HaikuPorts project maintains ports of additional software, including KDE and GTK applications. That means Haiku has a broader software ecosystem than the bundled system alone, but availability of a port does not guarantee the same features, polish, or compatibility as the equivalent application on another operating system.

Browsers and applications

For R1/beta6 on x86_64, Haiku’s software depots offer Firefox-branded browsers as well as LibreWolf, Waterfox, Floorp, and Icedove, according to the official beta6 release notes. The project cautions that browsers and derivatives may lack features or have incomplete functionality compared with their versions on other operating systems. The notes also identify a Go compiler and runtime port in the repositories; they describe it as somewhat out of date and not submitted for inclusion upstream.

In practical terms, Haiku is worth exploring if you want to use its desktop, try software ports, or investigate its BeOS-inspired approach. First check whether the particular applications and features you depend on are available and work as needed; the existence of a port alone is not proof of parity.

Is Haiku stable enough to replace your current OS?

Not as a safe default for critical work. Haiku’s R1/beta6 release notes, published August 26, 2026, call it beta-quality software: feature complete, but still subject to known and unknown bugs. The project says it cannot assure users against data loss. Its user guide also discourages using beta versions in production and recommends keeping backups.

The project reports that more than 530 bug and enhancement tickets were resolved for beta6. That is a project-reported count of work completed for the release, not a measure of how many defects remain or an independent quality rating. The same release notes report more than 3,900 open and over 16,000 closed items on the bug tracker; those totals likewise do not tell you how a particular device or workflow will behave.

A sensible way to try it

  1. Start with a virtual machine. The Haiku project repository recommends this option if you do not want to install on bare hardware.
  2. Use a stable release image for ordinary evaluation. The official download page offers release and nightly images. Nightlies are mainly for development and testing, may be broken, and omit some bundled software.
  3. Back up data before any hardware installation. Beta software carries data-loss risk; do not partition or install on a computer containing the only copy of important files.
  4. Check your exact components before committing. Verify that your network adapter, graphics, audio, and storage work; test sleep or other hardware-dependent features you need. Compatibility is not guaranteed for an individual machine.

Which computers and architectures does Haiku support?

For R1/beta6, the official downloads are x86 32-bit and x86_64 64-bit. The download page labels ARM, ARM64, RISC-V 64, and SPARC variants as unsupported development builds, not ready-to-install general-purpose releases. In particular, the existence of an ARM build does not establish that Haiku is a supported Raspberry Pi or Apple Silicon system.

Official x86 variant BeOS binary compatibility Published requirements
Haiku 32-bit Hybrid (x86) Yes Minimum: Intel Pentium II or AMD Athlon processor, 256 MB memory, 800×600 display, and 2 GB storage. (Haiku R1/beta6 release notes.)
Haiku 64-bit (x86_64) No Recommended: Intel Core i3 or AMD Phenom II processor, 2 GB memory, 1366×768 display, and 16 GB storage. (Haiku R1/beta6 release notes.)

The figures above are Haiku’s published baseline and recommended specifications, not a promise that a computer meeting them will have working Wi-Fi, graphics acceleration, sound, suspend, or every other component. The beta6 notes say compatibility work particularly improves support on recent x86 systems and that many systems that failed to boot on the preceding release should now work more smoothly; that is a general project statement, not a guarantee for each model or device.

How compatible are Haiku’s hardware and networking?

Hardware support varies by the exact device and chipset. Beta6 includes compatibility work, including expanded support for USB Ethernet and Wi-Fi adapters through driver compatibility changes. The user guide notes that Wi-Fi firmware may require manual installation because hardware vendors have different licensing policies.

Before installing to a physical computer, identify its network, graphics, audio, and storage hardware as precisely as you can. Where possible, boot or otherwise test Haiku without committing your existing installation. A broad system requirement or a general improvement in a release note cannot confirm that a particular component will work.

What changed in Haiku R1/beta6?

The August 2026 release notes describe nearly two years of development work, including broader hardware compatibility changes, improved audio output, USB Ethernet and Wi-Fi adapter improvements, and system-wide performance work.

The project reports that a specific buffer-management change made MIME sniffing 5–10 times faster or more. It also reports a test of git status in a repository containing more than 160,000 files: about 33 seconds before optimization versus about 20 seconds after with a cold disk cache, and about 15 seconds versus about 2.5 seconds with a hot cache. These are project-reported results for particular operations and conditions, not independent benchmarks or a general comparison of Haiku’s speed with another operating system.

How should Haiku compare with another operating system?

Choose based on what you need the computer to do, rather than on the novelty of a different desktop. For an alternative OS, check its release maturity and data-loss risk, exact hardware and driver support, completeness of required applications, and whether its architecture and compatibility meet your needs. Haiku’s 32-bit Hybrid version offers BeOS binary compatibility; its 64-bit x86_64 version does not. A virtual machine gives you a lower-commitment way to evaluate Haiku than replacing an existing system, though it cannot establish that all bare-metal hardware will work.
