FortiGuard Labs reports that attackers exploited 24 known vulnerabilities in internet-facing network and IoT equipment to install ClingSTUN, a Linux backdoor that can maintain remote access and turn compromised devices into proxy nodes. The count is a snapshot of vulnerabilities included in the report published October 5, 2026—not a claim that one new Linux flaw affects every device. Administrators should check exact models and firmware, reduce unnecessary internet exposure, and investigate multiple suspicious signs together. A connection to a public STUN server by itself does not prove infection.
What the 24-vulnerability report says
FortiGuard Labs’ October 5, 2026 analysis describes three campaign periods and reports 24 vulnerabilities associated with initial access as of publication. ThaiCERT summarized the same figure on October 6. FortiGuard says it continues to collect vulnerability information and update signatures, so 24 should be read as the report’s campaign snapshot, not a final or timeless total. The activity involves known flaws in exposed devices; the reporting does not describe a single new Linux kernel vulnerability.
Examples in FortiGuard’s reported initial-access list include CVE-2022-36553 affecting Hytec Inter HWL-2511-SS, CVE-2025-34035 in EnGenius EnShare, and CVE-2024-23625 in D-Link UPnP. The report also identifies flaws involving Linear eMerge, Realtek SDK, TP-Link Archer AX21, AVTECH AVM1203, D-Link, Sunhillo, Ivanti, Tenda, MeiG, and Lantronix. These names do not mean that every product from those vendors is affected: exposure depends on the specific device, firmware, vulnerable component, and network configuration. See the FortiGuard Labs analysis and check the applicable vendor advisory for exact scope.
ThaiCERT also describes seven additional vulnerabilities embedded for propagation, and FortiGuard lists seven hardcoded exploit entries for self-propagation. These are separate from the 24 reported initial-access vulnerabilities; the figures describe different roles in the campaign and should not be added together as one vulnerability set. ThaiCERT’s summary is available from ThaiCERT.

What is ClingSTUN, and how does it help attackers?
FortiGuard describes ClingSTUN as a Linux back-connect proxy backdoor. Once installed, it can give an operator a route back to the compromised device, execute remote commands, and use the device to relay traffic. A device need not contain sensitive files to be valuable: its network position and connectivity can make it useful as an intermediary.
The malware uses public STUN services. STUN, or Session Traversal Utilities for NAT, is a legitimate protocol used by applications such as VoIP and WebRTC to discover the externally mapped IP address and port of a device behind network address translation (NAT). ClingSTUN uses that information to support connectivity through NAT. Because ordinary applications also use public STUN servers, a STUN connection alone is not evidence that a device is compromised or that the server itself is malicious.

What ClingSTUN does on a compromised device
FortiGuard’s technical analysis describes behavior that defenders can use as investigative leads. The report says the malware can download builds for ARM, Intel 80386, MIPS R3000, PowerPC, and AMD x86-64 architectures, reflecting the variety of Linux-based equipment it targets.
- Persistence: It can modify startup paths including
/etc/inittab,/etc/init.d/rcS, and/etc/rc.d/rc.boot. - File locations: FortiGuard identifies copies at
/root/.clingand/usr/local/bin/.cling. - Concealment and continued operation: The report documents process and watchdog manipulation and concealment behavior.
- Remote control: The backdoor supports remote command execution and proxy activity.
These are reported malware behaviors, not a universal checklist that will be present on every device or variant. A missing file or process does not by itself clear a device, and unusual activity should be evaluated in the context of its model, firmware, and normal operation.

How administrators should check exposed devices
- Inventory internet-facing equipment. Record each device’s exact make and model, firmware version, support status, exposed management interfaces, and other services reachable from the internet.
- Compare device details with vendor advisories. Verify whether the specific model and firmware are affected and whether a security update is available. Do not infer vulnerability or remediation status from a vendor name alone.
- Apply supported security updates. Install vendor firmware or security updates that apply to the device, following the vendor’s instructions and confirming the resulting version.
- Reduce direct exposure. Remove unnecessary internet access to management interfaces and disable or restrict services that do not need to be publicly reachable. Isolate or replace unsupported equipment when it cannot receive needed security fixes.
- Investigate multiple indicators together. Look for suspicious processes, unexpected changes to startup files, unexplained UDP connections, and recurring STUN activity. Assess these signs together rather than treating STUN use alone as confirmation.
- Use current incident guidance if compromise is suspected. Consult FortiGuard’s original analysis for its indicators and check current vendor guidance. The report does not establish one cleanup procedure that applies to every device and firmware.
What remains unknown
The reviewed reporting does not identify the campaign operators, give a total number of infected devices, or name affected organizations. HackRead notes these disclosure limits in its October 5 account; it also attributes the following assessment to Jason Soroko, senior fellow at Sectigo: “A device does not need to hold sensitive data to be useful to an attacker,” and “ClingSTUN lets attackers relay traffic through compromised devices and run commands on them.” These are Soroko’s comments as quoted by HackRead, not statements from FortiGuard’s technical report.
Campaign indicators, vulnerability lists, signatures, and vendor fixes may change after the reports’ October 2026 publication. Determining whether a particular device is affected requires checking its exact hardware and firmware against current vendor advisories and reviewing how it is exposed on the local network.
