A strong hackathon demo shows the project working, explains who it helps, and makes one important technical choice understandable. Start with the project name, user, and problem; demonstrate its central interaction; then explain what works, what remains incomplete, and what the team learned. The exact format depends on the event: check its rubric, time limit, submission requirements, and whether it wants a live presentation, a video, or a separate business pitch.
What should I include in a hackathon demo?
Include the project, its intended user and problem, a visible demonstration of the main function, a concise explanation of how that function works, and an honest account of progress. Put those pieces in an order that lets a judge understand the result before hearing a long description of how the team built it.
- Name the project and its user. State the project name, who it is for, and the problem or prompt it addresses. Keep the context short enough that the audience reaches the demo quickly.
- Show the working moment. Set up a realistic task or input, perform the core interaction, and show the output. A software project can be demonstrated through its central user flow; a physical prototype should be shown doing the thing it was made to do.
- Explain one consequential technical decision. Describe the component, implementation choice, or code segment that helps the audience understand how the demonstrated function works. Connect the explanation to something the audience has just seen instead of listing every tool in the stack.
- Describe the result and its limits. Say what is functional, what the team completed during the permitted period, and what remains unfinished or would come next. Do not present a planned feature, mockup, or unreliable integration as completed functionality.
- Match the event’s rubric and handoff. Address the criteria the event actually scores, leave the time it allots for questions, and provide the requested links or files with the required access settings.
This order is a useful default, not a universal event rule. For digital submissions, a recorded view of the project operating may communicate more than a slide deck; for a classroom or stage presentation, a brief diagram or storyboard can orient the audience before the demonstration.
How should I pace a three-minute presentation?
For a three-minute slot, a practical illustrative run-of-show is 20–30 seconds for the user and problem, about 90 seconds for one end-to-end action, 30–45 seconds for the key implementation and its relevance to the rubric, and the remaining time for the result, limitation, and handoff. This is editorial guidance, not a timing rule issued by an organizer.

Rehearse against the actual event clock, including transitions and any required Q&A. If the demo runs long, shorten the opening context first rather than cutting the interaction that proves the project works. A single complete flow is usually easier to follow than several hurried features.
Do I need slides for a hackathon presentation?
Not necessarily. The event format determines whether slides are useful, required, or beside the point: some judging emphasizes a video demo, while a classroom presentation may call for a storyboard or diagram.
Major League Hacking’s organizer guide says, “Their video should be a demo of their hack, not a presentation.” Its standard rules also emphasize showing what was built. By contrast, the College Board’s Hackathon Tool Kit recommends a presentation showcasing the program solution, with an app name, explanation of user and problem, interface storyboard or diagram, a code segment tied to a live or video demonstration, a project link or export, and a brief account of collaboration. Those recommendations serve an educational presentation context; they do not override a competition’s instructions.
Use a slide, screenshot, or architecture sketch only when it makes the project easier to understand—for example, to show a system boundary the live interface cannot reveal. Avoid turning the demo into a stack inventory or a sequence of slides that delays the first working interaction.

How do I tailor the demo to the event’s judging criteria?
Read the event’s published rubric and submission instructions before deciding what to emphasize. A polished pitch is not automatically what judges score: events may evaluate the idea, execution, technical quality, design, impact, or other criteria, and their formats and rules differ.
Demo-first digital events
In specified digital-event or MLH-category contexts, Major League Hacking’s standard hackathon rules identify technology, design, completion, and learning as four equally weighted dimensions. They allow teams with unfinished hacks to explain what they tried. The rules also caution that member events may use their own rules, so check the event’s version rather than assuming every organizer follows the same scoring or submission format.
Event-specific showcase
HackIllinois 2026 is a concrete example, not a universal template. Its attendee guide listed idea and creativity, product design, execution and technical quality, and impact and intent. It required a public GitHub repository, a video no longer than three minutes, and a track-specific description. Its showcase allowed three minutes to present and a possible two-minute Q&A.

Separate entrepreneurship pitch
Do not add a startup pitch to an ordinary project demo unless the event asks for one. At HackIllinois 2026, selected HackVoyagers finalists had a distinct seven-minute pitch followed by five minutes of Q&A; the recommended deck covered vision, market, competitors, business model, and roadmap. Those business topics fit that separate finalist format, not every hackathon presentation.

Organizer-defined scoring
Devpost’s organizer guidance gives idea, implementation, and impact as an example judging framework and advises organizers to make criteria available. Compare the actual format (table demo, video, or stage presentation), time and Q&A, required materials, and rubric. Do not assume that slide design or commercial potential receives points unless the event says so. The example appears in Devpost’s guide to running an AI hackathon.
What should I do if the project is unfinished or unreliable?
Be specific and candid. Show the behavior that does work, identify the part that is incomplete or failed, and explain what the team tried or learned; do not describe a mockup or planned feature as a functioning product. Major League Hacking’s rules allow an unfinished hack to be presented through the team’s attempts and learning, although an event may set its own eligibility threshold.
If a network call, integration, or physical prototype may fail live, prepare a clear explanation of the behavior you can demonstrate. A recording can serve as a practical fallback where the event allows it, but it must represent the project honestly and comply with submission rules. If a failure changes what the audience can see, explain that distinction rather than presenting a rehearsed path as a live result.

How do I prepare a hackathon demo video and submission?
First check the event’s current instructions for the video length, visibility, deadline, required links, and access settings. These requirements vary, even between otherwise similar events.
For example, MLH’s fully digital host rules specify a maximum two-minute video, a mention of the hackathon at the start, and a public post-event video. HackIllinois 2026 instead specified a video no longer than three minutes that could be unlisted or public. These are examples tied to those rules, not defaults to apply to another competition. The MLH requirements appear in its standard rules, while the HackIllinois requirements are in its 2026 attendee guide.
- Make a submission checklist from the event page. Record the requested repository, demo video, project description, deadline, and visibility or permission settings. Do not infer that a public link is acceptable—or required—unless the instructions say so.
- Plan the recording around the actual working flow. Capture the project operating, with enough context to understand the input and output. Keep any spoken explanation tied to what is visible.
- Check links and access before submitting. Open each submitted link using the access level the event requires and confirm that the intended material is available.
- Rehearse a concise handoff. End by pointing to the requested project materials and use any remaining allotted time for questions.
Professional recording equipment is not a general requirement. HudsonAlpha’s historical HATCH participant guide said a smartphone alone could be used to make its required video. A smartphone tripod may be a convenient optional aid when filming a person or physical prototype, but it is not an organizer requirement. The historical example should not be read as a statement about another event’s current submission rules.

- A long abstract pitch before the project appears: name the user and need, then show the solution.
- An exhaustive technology list: explain the technical choice that matters to the demonstrated function.
- Unverified claims of completion: separate working features from mockups, planned work, and failed integrations.
- Generic business-plan slides: include market, competition, or business-model detail only when the event asks for a pitch or scores those areas.
- Assumptions about another event’s rules: a two-minute limit, a public video, a public repository, or any particular rubric is event-specific unless the current organizer instructions make it universal for that event.
What should my final demo checklist cover?
Use this checklist before the presentation or upload:
- The project name, intended user, and problem are clear.
- The core interaction has a realistic input and visible output.
- The technical explanation connects one meaningful implementation choice to the demonstrated behavior.
- Completed functionality is distinguished from incomplete work and future plans.
- The emphasis matches the event’s rubric, format, time limit, and Q&A allowance.
- Required repository, video, description, access settings, and deadline have been checked against the event’s instructions.
- Any required disclosures, including AI-tool use or reused materials, follow the applicable rules.
One organizer-planning figure can help explain why concise judging formats matter, but it should not be mistaken for an individual project’s odds: Major League Hacking reported an average of one submitted project per four checked-in hackers across the August 2025–March 2026 season. Its organizer guide also uses a four-minute-per-project allowance in a sample judging calculation, including a two-minute presentation and demo. These are planning observations and a sample calculation, not a prediction of how many judges will see a particular project.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “one project per four hackers” mean for judging?
Major League Hacking reported that average across its August 2025–March 2026 season as an organizer-planning observation. It is not a success rate, a project quota for an individual event, or an estimate of how many judges a team will face.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I use an unlisted demo video instead of a public one?
Only if the event permits it. HackIllinois 2026 allowed unlisted or public video, while MLH’s fully digital host rules specified a public post-event video; the organizer’s current instructions control.
Does a hackathon presentation need to explain team collaboration?
That depends on the format and criteria. The College Board toolkit recommends a brief account of collaboration for an educational presentation, but that recommendation does not establish a universal competition requirement.
