Gusto is easier to compare by published plan: its entry plan covers payroll in one state, while higher tiers add multi-state payroll, time tracking and other tools. QuickBooks Payroll is worth evaluating alongside your accounting setup, but check whether a quoted price is for payroll alone or a bundle that also includes Workforce and accounting. Compare the total cost and features you actually need—not just the starting price.
How to compare Gusto and QuickBooks Payroll
Start with your employee count, work locations, payroll needs and bookkeeping workflow. Then price the specific plan from each vendor that meets those requirements. Gusto publishes a base monthly fee plus a per-person charge; Intuit also displays combined Workforce-and-accounting bundles, which are not directly comparable to payroll-only pricing.
- Price the same workforce: Include the base fee, employee charges and any necessary add-ons.
- Match required features: Check payroll runs, tax handling, state coverage, time tracking, pay timing, HR tools and support.
- Account for bookkeeping: If you already use QuickBooks accounting, confirm how the exact payroll plan connects to your records and workflow.
What Gusto’s published plans cost and include
Gusto’s pricing page lists three plans with monthly base fees and per-person charges. The listed prices below were on the vendor page accessed October 7, 2026; prices and eligibility can change, so confirm current terms before buying.
| Gusto plan | Published monthly price | Notable listed features |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | $49 per month plus $6 per person per month | Single-state payroll, unlimited monthly payrolls, and tax filings and payments |
| Plus | $80 per month plus $12 per person per month | Multi-state payroll, time tracking, and next-day pay |
| Premium | $180 per month plus $22 per person per month | Premium support and compliance-related tools |
These are plan-level descriptions, not a guarantee that every feature or service is available in every situation. Check Gusto’s pricing and plan details for current inclusions, add-ons and eligibility.

Estimate your Gusto monthly charge
For a basic estimate, multiply the per-person charge by the number of people billed and add the plan’s base fee. For example, a business with five people on Simple would calculate $49 + (5 × $6) = $79 per month before any add-ons or other charges. This arithmetic uses the listed monthly rates; it is not a quote.
What to check in QuickBooks Payroll pricing
Intuit’s current pricing page describes full-service payroll, payroll tax calculation, filing and payment, payroll reporting, and automatic payroll for salaried employees. It also displays bundled Workforce-plus-accounting prices. Because those bundles include more than payroll, compare them with a Gusto payroll plan only after deciding whether you need the included accounting and Workforce products.

Use the QuickBooks Payroll pricing page to identify the exact package, its current price, included services, employee charges, and any conditions. The available comparison information does not establish a single payroll-only price that can be fairly set against every Gusto tier.
Which service fits your workflow?
Choose Gusto when its plan structure matches your needs
Gusto is a straightforward candidate if you want to select from clearly differentiated payroll tiers. Simple is listed for single-state payroll; Plus adds multi-state payroll, time tracking and next-day pay; Premium adds premium support and compliance-related tools. Confirm state coverage, registration costs, feature limits and add-ons for your particular business before choosing.

Evaluate QuickBooks Payroll in the context of QuickBooks accounting
If your business already keeps its books in QuickBooks, assess how the payroll package under consideration connects to those records and supports the process your bookkeeper or accountant uses. Do not assume every QuickBooks-branded payroll or Workforce bundle has the same accounting features or integration behavior; verify the exact package with Intuit.
Compare operational details, not brand claims
Both vendors describe payroll and tax-related functions, but the available official information does not provide a neutral, independent head-to-head test establishing which is more accurate or easier to use. Confirm that the plan you would buy supports the payroll schedule, tax filings, reporting, support level and HR or compliance tools your team needs.

A practical way to make the decision
- List your requirements. Write down employee count, states where employees work, payroll frequency, time-tracking needs, pay timing, tax services, support expectations and any HR or compliance requirements.
- Select a qualifying plan from each vendor. For Gusto, check whether Simple’s single-state scope is sufficient or whether Plus or Premium is required. For QuickBooks, distinguish payroll-only pricing from any Workforce-and-accounting bundle.
- Calculate total monthly cost. Add each plan’s base fee, per-person charges and required add-ons at your actual employee count. Compare equivalent packages rather than one vendor’s entry plan with the other’s bundle or higher tier.
- Verify the workflow before committing. Confirm current state availability, any registration fees, integration behavior, feature limits and support eligibility directly with the vendor.
What Gusto’s customer survey does—and does not—show
Gusto’s comparison page reports that its own September 2024 survey of 538 Gusto customers found an average of 156 hours saved annually. That is a vendor-reported survey finding, not an independent comparison showing that Gusto saves more time than QuickBooks Payroll. The same comparison page says its competitor feature data was collected as of July 2025 and may change, so use it as a starting point for questions and confirm current details with each provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: choose based on total cost and fit
Gusto is the clearer fit when its published tiers cover your payroll requirements, especially if you need the multi-state and time-tracking features listed on Plus. QuickBooks Payroll deserves closer consideration when your accounting workflow already depends on QuickBooks, but price the exact package and confirm how it works with your records. The better choice is the qualifying plan with the lower total cost and the fewest workflow compromises for your business.
