How are the settings and tone different?
Red Dead Redemption 2: an 1899 frontier story
RDR2’s world is built around the gang’s flight across the American heartland and Arthur Morgan’s place in it. Its historical setting shapes the frontier landscape Rockstar describes: from northern snow-covered mountains to southern swamps, with farms, outposts, and towns in between. GTA VI: Vice City and Leonida
Rockstar’s announced premise puts Jason and Lucia in Vice City and a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. The official announcement describes GTA VI as a single-player experience. It is a contemporary setting, unlike RDR2’s 1899 frontier; comparisons of tone beyond that basic contrast are interpretation, not a measure of which game’s world is more immersive. Rockstar Games
How are the GTA 6 and RDR2 maps different?
RDR2 has publisher-described frontier environments and settlements; GTA VI’s disclosed geography points to a range of settings within Leonida, from urban Vice City to natural areas. That report also attributes a qualitative size claim to Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut, who described GTA VI’s world as the studio’s largest “by some degree.” It does not provide comparable measured land areas for GTA VI and RDR2. What can you do in each open world?
RDR2 activities: separate story mode from online
Rockstar’s cited overview lists activities and roles including bounty hunting, trading, collecting, moonshining, and naturalism in Red Dead Online. Those online features should not be treated as a list of story-mode activities. GTA VI details: what preview reporting establishes
TechRadar’s summary of the 2026 Game Informer feature reports Rockstar figures of 170 animal species, including more than 60 bird types and over 30 land mammals, and more than 600,000 combined NPC animations. These are attributed pre-release figures, not independently verified counts from a launched game. The same report describes a weather system designed to be more localized and persistent, quoting Rockstar vice president of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd. Together, these disclosures suggest environmental variety and detail are areas Rockstar has emphasized; they do not confirm specific player activities or prove how the systems will feel in play. Which open world should you choose?
- Choose RDR2 if you want a released game now and a story set in an 1899 frontier world with Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang.
