You cannot enable HDR, VRR or 120Hz for GTA 6 on PC right now because Rockstar has not announced a PC version. Rockstar’s official announcement names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for the game’s November 19, 2026 release; it does not give a PC release date or confirm PC display features. You can prepare and check whether your Windows PC, display and connection support HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR) and 120Hz—but those checks do not establish what a future PC edition will support.

This distinction matters if you are searching for a GTA 6 PC settings menu or trying to fix an HDR option that appears greyed out: there are no verified GTA 6 PC menu paths to follow. The Windows and display checks below are general preparation, not instructions for enabling these features in GTA 6. Rockstar’s announcement and Rockstar’s support listings are the relevant places to recheck for a platform update.

Update: November 4, 2026. The latest official platform information available for this guide lists GTA 6 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date. No PC edition, PC launch date, PC requirements, or PC HDR, VRR, 120Hz or 120fps support is confirmed in that information. That is not proof that a PC version will never arrive; it means there is no verified PC version to configure today.

Why can’t I enable HDR, VRR or 120Hz for GTA 6 on PC?

Because a PC version has not been announced, there is no confirmed GTA 6 PC settings screen or in-game toggle for any of those features. Windows can enable display capabilities, but doing so does not create a game version or demonstrate that a particular game supports those capabilities.

Rockstar’s October 15 announcement says, “Grand Theft Auto VI arrives November 19 to PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S.” Its current official game information likewise concerns the console release. The November 19 date is a console release date—not a PC launch date—and Rockstar has not supplied a PC release date or system requirements in the cited information. You should not treat PC-related listings, rumored settings, or a console announcement as evidence of a PC launch.

The distinction between the platform and the display is the key to avoiding misleading setup advice:

  • HDR is a display and operating-system capability as well as something a game may implement. Turning on Windows HDR does not prove a game has native HDR.
  • VRR lets a compatible display vary its refresh timing. A Windows indication that a display supports VRR is not confirmation that a specific game supports it or that the game is using it.
  • 120Hz is a display refresh rate. It is not the same as a game rendering 120 frames per second (120fps), and setting Windows to 120Hz does not guarantee that result.

So if your goal is to play GTA 6 on a PC with HDR, VRR or 120fps, there is no supported PC setup path to give you yet. If your goal is to check that your existing Windows setup can use these display modes in compatible software, the following general steps can help.

What should I check before changing display settings?

Start with the exact display mode you want to use, such as 4K at 120Hz. The display, the computer’s graphics output, the display input and the connection between them all need to support the mode together. A cable or Windows setting cannot add a capability that the hardware does not support.

  1. Check the display’s specifications. Look up whether the specific monitor or TV supports HDR, VRR and the refresh rate you want at your intended resolution. A display may support a high refresh rate in one mode but not another; verify the combination rather than relying on a headline maximum.
  2. Check the computer and display ports. Identify the graphics output on your PC and the input used on the display. Confirm that the particular ports support the resolution, refresh rate and features you need. If the display offers an appropriate DisplayPort connection, Microsoft suggests checking that route when HDMI is causing HDR problems.
  3. Check the selected input and its settings. Confirm that the screen is on the input connected to the PC, and review the display’s own picture or input settings. Some displays have settings that must be enabled for HDR or a particular input mode; consult the display maker’s documentation for the exact labels.
  4. Check the cable category where relevant. Rockstar’s general HDR troubleshooting recommends an HDMI 2.1-capable cable for an HDMI setup. HDMI Licensing Administrator says certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cables support 4K at 120Hz and VRR, and can carry up to 48Gbps. Look for the certification label; these are cable-category specifications, not a GTA 6 performance target or a guarantee that every device in the chain supports the mode.

The whole path matters: a capable display connected through an incompatible port, input or cable may not expose the desired mode. Conversely, connecting a suitable cable cannot turn an incompatible screen or PC output into a 4K/120Hz, HDR or VRR device. Rockstar’s HDR guidance is general troubleshooting advice and is not a GTA 6 PC compatibility statement. Read Rockstar’s HDR troubleshooting guidance and the HDMI cable certification overview for those respective general topics.

How do I check HDR in Windows 11?

On a compatible Windows 11 PC and HDR-capable screen, select the display you intend to use and turn on HDR in Windows. Then check the display’s own settings. This prepares the Windows display path; it does not enable or verify native HDR in GTA 6.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. If more than one screen is connected, select the HDR-capable display you intend to use.
  3. Turn on the HDR setting if Windows offers it for that display.
  4. Open the monitor or TV’s own settings and enable HDR there if its documentation or menu requires it. Rockstar’s general HDR troubleshooting also suggests trying the display’s Game Mode, if available, and reviewing picture-processing options.

If the Windows HDR switch is missing or unavailable, do not assume there is a GTA 6 error. Check whether the selected display supports HDR, whether you selected the right screen, and whether the graphics output, input and connection support the intended mode. Microsoft also notes that duplicating a laptop screen to an external HDR display can prevent HDR in that configuration; extending the displays may help. Its HDR guidance describes using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) to check display capabilities when needed.

Microsoft’s Windows HDR settings guide explains the operating-system controls and troubleshooting. It does not establish that GTA 6 has native HDR on PC. A Windows HDR desktop, a display’s HDR indicator or an HDR toggle in another application cannot answer that game-specific question.

How can I check 120Hz and VRR in Windows?

Use Advanced display to inspect what Windows reports for the selected screen, then choose 120Hz only if that rate is offered for the mode you want. The available rate is determined by the display and what it supports; a 120Hz output setting is not a 120fps promise.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display, select the screen connected to your PC, and open Advanced display.
  2. Read the selected display’s reported resolution and refresh rate. Check whether Windows indicates VRR support for that display.
  3. If 120Hz is available for the intended display mode, select it. If it is not listed, review the display’s resolution-and-refresh specifications and the capabilities of the PC output, display input and connection.

Microsoft’s Windows documentation says, “The refresh rates that appear depend on your display and what it supports.” In other words, a Windows menu cannot add a mode that the display path does not offer. Check Microsoft’s instructions for changing a monitor’s refresh rate for the Windows control and Microsoft’s display guidance for relevant compatibility checks.

VRR support in Windows is also a hardware-and-software compatibility matter, not a GTA 6 toggle. Microsoft documents VRR-related optimizations for compatible windowed games, but that does not confirm that GTA 6 on PC exists or is compatible. Likewise, Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is separate from a GTA 6 VRR setting. Microsoft says DRR needs a VRR-capable display and at least 120Hz, and warns that it may limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. Do not enable DRR as a blanket fix for an unannounced game.

What can I do if HDR is greyed out or 120Hz is missing?

First troubleshoot the PC-to-display path, not an unverified GTA 6 menu. A greyed-out HDR switch or absent refresh rate usually means Windows is not offering that mode in the current display configuration; check the display, selected screen, ports, connection and mode before changing unrelated settings.

  • HDR is unavailable: Confirm the selected screen is HDR-capable and that Windows is displaying on that screen. Check the PC’s output, display input and connection, then enable HDR in the display’s own settings if required. If you are duplicating a laptop display to an external HDR screen, try extending the displays, as Microsoft recommends.
  • 120Hz is missing: In Advanced display, confirm you selected the intended screen and inspect its available rates. Check whether the display supports 120Hz at the chosen resolution and whether the connection uses compatible ports and a suitable cable. Do not assume a game setting can add an unsupported display mode.
  • VRR is not reported: Confirm the specific display and connection support VRR, then review the display and PC documentation. The presence of a high refresh rate alone does not establish VRR support.
  • The image looks wrong after enabling HDR: Check both Windows and display settings and consult Microsoft’s HDR troubleshooting. Windows HDR Calibration is available for HDR-capable Windows 11 displays; Microsoft documents three test patterns in the app. Calibration can help adjust the display path, but it cannot prove a game’s HDR implementation.

These checks are for Windows and compatible software generally. They are not GTA 6 fixes, and there is no verified GTA 6 PC error message, menu label or in-game troubleshooting path to prescribe. For general display help, use Microsoft’s HDR instructions and Rockstar’s general HDR troubleshooting page.

Will Windows HDR Calibration or Auto HDR enable GTA 6 HDR?

No verified information supports that conclusion. Windows HDR Calibration adjusts aspects of a compatible HDR display in Windows, while Auto HDR is documented for supported SDR games; neither establishes native HDR support for a GTA 6 PC edition that has not been announced.

Microsoft says the HDR Calibration app uses three test patterns. Use the app only as a general display-calibration tool on an HDR-capable Windows 11 display, following Microsoft’s guidance. Do not treat a successful calibration as proof that an unannounced game will use HDR, or prescribe Auto HDR as a tested GTA 6 fix.

More generally, keep three questions separate: whether your screen can display HDR, whether Windows can output HDR to it, and whether a particular game supports HDR in its own implementation. The first two can be checked in your current setup. The third requires game-specific information that Rockstar has not supplied for a PC version. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guide and its HDR Calibration app information.

What should I wait for before following a GTA 6 PC guide?

Wait for an official PC-platform announcement before following PC-specific setup instructions. Even that would confirm only the platform—not HDR, VRR, 120Hz, 120fps, an uncapped frame rate, system requirements or the names and locations of game settings.

For a reliable PC guide, Rockstar would need to confirm a PC release, and the specific display features and controls should be supported by separate official information or credible, attributable technical documentation. No GTA 6 PC HDR, VRR or 120fps benchmark, PC system-requirement figure or verified PC menu path is established in the available official material. Avoid claims that a console release date, generic Windows control, cable specification or monitor capability guarantees a particular PC game result.

Also do not mistake a console purchase for a PC workaround. Rockstar says the boxed console Standard Edition contains a download code, not a disc; it is not a PC copy. Check Rockstar’s official GTA 6 page and support listings for future platform information. An announcement should be followed by feature-specific confirmation before replacing these conditional Windows checks with GTA 6 instructions.

What can you conclude today?

There is no verified way to turn on HDR, VRR or 120Hz for GTA 6 on PC because Rockstar has not announced the PC version. You can check Windows HDR, refresh rate and VRR reporting, and verify that your display, PC output, input and connection support the modes you want. Those checks prepare your setup for compatible software; they do not confirm GTA 6 PC support, a 120fps result or any future in-game setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a GTA 6 console download code to install the game on a PC?

No. Rockstar identifies the boxed console Standard Edition as containing a download code, not a disc, and that code is not a PC copy. A console edition does not provide a way around the absence of an announced PC release.

Will Auto HDR make GTA 6 look like native HDR on a PC?

That cannot be confirmed without an announced PC edition and game-specific support information. Auto HDR is a Windows feature for supported SDR games; its availability does not show how a future GTA 6 PC version would handle HDR.

Does setting Windows to 120Hz mean GTA 6 will run at 120fps?

No. The Windows setting controls the display output refresh rate, while the game’s rendered frame rate is a separate matter. No GTA 6 PC frame-rate figure or benchmark is established in the official information cited here.
