Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said Grand Theft Auto VI has been in development since 2015, but most of the team began working on it after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018. Those are different milestones: the project’s early development began years before the broader team ramped up. The announced release date has also moved, from 2025 to May 26, 2026, and then to November 19, 2026.
When did GTA 6 development start?
In an interview with French outlet TroisCouleurs, reported by GamesRadar, Nelson said: “The game’s been in development since 2015, so the idea is gestating for a long time.” He also said: “The majority of the team really started rolling on it after Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018.”
The first date describes the project’s development; the second marks when most of the team got involved. Nelson’s comments do not mean that every team member worked continuously on the game from 2015.

What Rockstar has said about the long timeline
Long development cycles and creative choices
Nelson’s comments point to two considerations behind a long project: Rockstar’s extended development cycles and the challenge of choosing material that will still fit by the time it is written, performed, and implemented. As he put it, topical ideas “could be gone, could change, could be dated.” He said the studio tries to select concepts that fit the story and its fictional world. That is a creative consideration, not a full explanation of the schedule.

What the public explanations do—and do not—establish
When Take-Two announced the May 2026 date in May 2025, CEO Strauss Zelnick said the company supported Rockstar taking additional time to realize its creative vision. That explains the stated rationale at that point. The public statements cited here do not provide a complete account of the internal reasons behind every date change, so claims about specific causes such as staffing, scope, or production resets should not be treated as established by these announcements.
What is currently announced about the game
Rockstar and Take-Two have announced GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official materials cited here do not announce a PC version or release date; that does not establish that a PC version will never arrive.

The story is set in Leonida, including Vice City. In the May 2025 Trailer 2 announcement, Take-Two described Jason and Lucia as a pair relying on each other after an easy score goes wrong, amid a criminal conspiracy across the state. The announcement is available in Take-Two’s Trailer 2 release.

What the announced editions and physical format mean
Take-Two’s June 2026 announcement lists a Standard Edition at $79.99 and an Ultimate Edition at $99.99. Those are the prices stated in that announcement; check the current listing for your region before buying. It also says digital pre-load begins November 12, 2026, and that the physical version will be available starting November 12 to support pre-loading.

“Physical” does not mean a disc in this case. Rockstar Support says the boxed Standard Edition contains a download code and no disc. The Standard Edition can be upgraded digitally to Ultimate through the PlayStation or Microsoft store. Rockstar also warns that account-region restrictions can affect activation and recommends buying from a retailer in the country associated with the platform account. Nelson’s 2015 and 2018 milestones help clarify why “in development since 2015” does not mean the whole studio spent every year on the game. The release announcements show a separate timeline: the public target shifted twice before Take-Two reaffirmed November 19, 2026. Rockstar has described creative considerations and support for additional time, but the available public explanations do not account for every internal scheduling decision.

The scale of the franchise provides context, not a measure of this game’s development time: Rockstar’s December 4, 2023 announcement said Grand Theft Auto V had sold over 190 million units as of that announcement. That is a dated company figure, not a current sales total.
