The best starting point for GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series X is your TV’s low-latency Game Mode, HDR enabled, artificial picture processing off, Dynamic Tone Mapping disabled, and HGiG enabled if available. Then run the console’s HDR calibration with the TV already in that mode. There is no verified GTA 6-specific brightness, paper-white, or peak-nit preset to copy, so avoid universal slider values.
As of November 6, 2026, Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 launch date. The console and TV instructions below prepare a compatible display path; they do not establish the game’s final resolution, frame rate, HDR sliders, or graphics modes.

What are the best 4K HDR TV settings for GTA 6?
Use a stable, low-processing HDR setup rather than chasing a brightness number that has not been confirmed for the game. Rockstar Games Customer Support advises players to “Enable the Game Mode preset, if available” and “Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping (DTM) if the option is enabled.”

- Picture preset: Game Mode, Game Optimizer, or the TV maker’s equivalent.
- HDR: Leave the TV’s native HDR handling enabled for HDR input.
- Dynamic Tone Mapping: Off.
- HGiG: On if the TV offers it. It is a useful option for a console-calibrated HDR setup, but it is not available on every display.
- Extra processing: Turn off AI, Smart, Dynamic, Adaptive, or other enhancement layers unless the TV manual says a setting is needed for HDR input.
- Console calibration: Run the matching HDR setup after selecting the TV’s Game Mode and HDR configuration.
Menu names vary by manufacturer, and some picture controls may disappear or behave differently while HDR is active. Rockstar notes that TV terminology and available settings are manufacturer-dependent. Do not copy someone else’s Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, or OLED Light values: those controls depend on the panel and may not mean the same thing across models.

How do I set up HDR for GTA 6 on PS5?
Set the TV to Game Mode first, connect the PS5 to a suitable TV HDMI input, and then use the console’s three-screen HDR adjustment. PlayStation Support describes HDR as delivering a wider contrast, color, and brightness range than SDR, but the correct calibration depends on the display in front of you.
- Enable HDR on the TV. Select the TV input connected to PS5 and choose its Game Mode or equivalent. Make sure that input is configured to accept the TV’s full-bandwidth signal if the manufacturer requires a per-port setting.
- Open the PS5 video settings. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Choose HDR behavior. Set HDR to On When Supported as the neutral default. Sony says Always On converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR, while On When Supported keeps non-HDR content in SDR. Always On is a preference, not a GTA 6 requirement.
- Run the HDR adjustment. Open Adjust HDR and complete all three screens. Follow the screen prompts rather than applying a number from another TV or a different room.
- Set resolution. Under Resolution, use Automatic or 2160p if the TV supports 4K. This configures the console’s output; it does not prove that a game renders internally at native 4K.
- Leave Video Transfer Rate on Auto initially. If you encounter flicker or compatibility trouble, Sony’s guidance allows trying -1 or -2. Change one value at a time and check whether the symptom changes.
- Enable supported gaming features. Turn on VRR when both the TV and the game support it. Apply to Unsupported Games is optional: use it only if it improves the particular title without producing artifacts. Enable 120 Hz Output for compatible games and ALLM when the TV supports it.
These switches expose PS5 output features; they do not confirm that GTA 6 will use 120 frames per second, a particular VRR range, or a specific resolution. Leave a setting off if it causes visible instability or the TV reports an incompatible signal.
How do I calibrate HDR for GTA 6 on Xbox Series X?
First put the television in Game Mode with HDR active, then let Xbox calibrate against that display configuration. The console has separate TV and HDR calibration tools; use them in order and verify the TV’s recognized capabilities before interpreting the result.
- Connect to the right HDMI input. Select a port that supports the TV’s required high-bandwidth features. Some manufacturers require an input option to be enabled before the port accepts full-bandwidth video.
- Set the TV to Game Mode and HDR. Keep Dynamic Tone Mapping off and use HGiG if available. Do not change picture modes after calibration unless you plan to calibrate again for the new mode.
- Check what Xbox detects. Open Settings > General > TV & Display Options and verify that the console recognizes the TV’s 4K and HDR capabilities.
- Calibrate the TV. Go to Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Setup > Calibrate TV and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Calibrate HDR for games. From the same Setup area, select Calibrate HDR for Games and complete the guided screens.
- Test the signal and gameplay. Keep HDR and VRR changes separate while troubleshooting. If colors are wrong or the image is corrupted, Xbox’s official guidance includes disabling HDR10 or Auto HDR, or disabling VRR, as diagnostic steps. Restore features one at a time after identifying which setting is associated with the problem.
Auto HDR is a console feature for converting eligible SDR content; it is not a GTA 6-specific HDR calibration control. If a display or signal problem appears, temporarily turning off HDR10 or Auto HDR can help isolate whether the issue concerns HDR handling, but that does not mean HDR should generally be disabled for the game.

Should I use HGiG or Dynamic Tone Mapping?
For the recommended baseline, disable Dynamic Tone Mapping and enable HGiG if the TV provides it. Rockstar Games Customer Support specifically recommends disabling DTM; it does not publish a universal instruction or calibration value for every TV model.
Dynamic Tone Mapping can apply the TV’s own changing interpretation of HDR brightness. That may make an image seem brighter, but it can also mean the TV is processing the signal after console calibration. HGiG, where supported, is intended for a setup in which the console calibration is used to guide HDR output rather than relying on an additional dynamic tone-mapping layer. Exact behavior and menu labels vary by manufacturer, so check your TV’s manual.
If HGiG makes a particular scene look too dim, do not compensate by blindly raising every picture control. Confirm that HDR is active, the correct Game Mode is selected, console calibration was completed in that mode, and the TV is not applying another brightness or energy-saving feature. You can compare the TV’s available HDR modes as a personal preference, but understand that changing tone mapping after calibration can change highlight appearance. Recalibrate if you settle on a substantially different picture mode.

A compatible HDMI 2.1-capable signal path is the safest choice for the high-bandwidth features and HDR troubleshooting described by Rockstar and the console makers. It does not raise the game’s frame rate by itself, and it does not guarantee that every TV port supports every feature advertised for the set.

Use a direct console-to-TV connection where possible. Sony says PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120 Hz output, and recommends the cable supplied with the console or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz. Connect to the TV’s appropriate HDMI 2.1 port; an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, or capture device in the middle can affect the signal if it does not support the required format.
TV makers use different labels for enabling full-bandwidth HDMI on an input. Xbox’s support guidance gives examples including HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color on LG TVs, HDMI UHD Color on Samsung TVs, and Enhanced format on Sony TVs. Find the setting for the specific HDMI port connected to the console; do not assume it is enabled on every input by default.
If buying a cable, look for an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for 4K 120Hz gaming. The cable supports the signal path; it cannot make GTA 6 render at 120 fps or add HDR support to a display that lacks it. A 4K HDR gaming TV is also a feature-led category rather than a specific model recommendation: check for HDMI 2.1, VRR, ALLM, suitable HDR handling, and enough full-bandwidth ports for all connected devices.
Why does my HDR picture look too dark or washed out?
First confirm that the console is sending HDR to the TV and that the TV is using the intended Game Mode. A dark image and washed-out blacks can have different causes, so change one setting at a time rather than resetting every picture control.

- Dark image: Verify HDR is active on both the console and the TV input. Re-run the console’s HDR calibration after selecting the TV’s intended Game Mode. Check for energy-saving or adaptive picture features that may alter brightness.
- Washed-out blacks: Confirm the HDMI input is using the correct signal mode and that the TV is not applying an unintended picture preset. Avoid changing black level or contrast based on a generic online value; settings and labels are model-specific.
- Highlights look clipped or unexpectedly dim: Check whether Dynamic Tone Mapping is active, whether HGiG is available, and whether you changed picture mode after calibration. Restore the chosen baseline and recalibrate.
- Wrong colors or corrupted image: Check the connection and TV input format. On Xbox, troubleshoot HDR and VRR independently; Xbox guidance includes disabling HDR10 or Auto HDR, or VRR, as diagnostic measures.
- Flicker on PS5: Keep Video Transfer Rate at Auto first. If compatibility issues persist, try Sony’s suggested -1 or -2 settings individually.
Do not assume that a dim image means GTA 6 needs a particular nit value or that a bright image is better calibrated. No authoritative GTA 6 peak-brightness target or black-level number is available in the official guidance covered here.
Will GTA 6 run at 4K 60 fps or 120 fps?
That is not established by the official information covered here. GTA 6’s listing for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a console’s 4K output option, and a TV’s 120 Hz input capability do not confirm the game’s internal resolution or frame rate.
Likewise, enabling PS5’s 120 Hz Output or VRR only makes those console features available to compatible games and displays. The sources do not confirm a GTA 6 60 fps or 120 fps performance mode, a guaranteed VRR range, or final console-specific HDR behavior. Treat any exact resolution, frame-rate, or in-game slider claim as unconfirmed unless Rockstar publishes it.

- HDR highlight handling and black levels: Consider whether the TV can show bright highlights while retaining dark-scene detail.
- Game Mode latency: Look for a low-latency gaming preset and ALLM support.
- HDMI bandwidth and port count: Check which ports support the full feature set. A TV may not provide the same bandwidth or capabilities on every input.
- VRR and refresh support: Confirm the console-facing input supports the features you intend to use.
- Tone mapping: Check whether the TV offers HGiG or dynamic tone-mapping controls and how the maker describes them.
- Firmware support: Review manufacturer support for the exact model, especially if features or compatibility depend on firmware.
On PS5 versus Xbox, compare the ease of the HDR calibration workflow, the TV’s compatibility with VRR/120 Hz/ALLM, and which console ecosystem you use. Official platform documentation does not establish a GTA 6-specific visual-performance winner between them.
What should I do before launch?
Prepare the signal path and calibration now, then revisit settings if the game exposes its own HDR setup or Rockstar publishes updated technical guidance. A short checklist helps avoid confusing a TV or connection issue with a game-specific setting.
- Connect the console directly to the TV’s appropriate HDMI port if practical.
- Enable any manufacturer-specific full-bandwidth input setting for that port.
- Set the display to Game Mode, HDR, Dynamic Tone Mapping off, and HGiG if available.
- Confirm that the console detects 4K and HDR capability.
- Complete the console’s HDR calibration in the picture mode you plan to use.
- Enable VRR, 120 Hz, and ALLM only where the TV and game support them; they are capabilities, not promised GTA 6 modes.
- When GTA 6 is available, check its own settings and any official Rockstar guidance before changing the calibrated baseline.
The point of this setup is consistency: let the TV use a low-latency mode, remove unneeded processing, and calibrate the console to the actual screen. Do not treat it as a guarantee of a particular game image or performance mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does On When Supported keep my PS5 home screen in SDR?
Yes. Sony’s HDR setting description says On When Supported leaves non-HDR games and apps in SDR, whereas Always On converts them to HDR. That makes On When Supported a straightforward default if you prefer HDR only for content that supports it.
Can an AV receiver prevent 4K HDR or 120 Hz from working?
It can if the receiver, switch, or other device in the signal path does not support the format being sent. A direct console-to-TV connection is a useful diagnostic; if features work directly but not through the receiver, check its supported HDMI formats and the port configuration.
Does the HDMI cable included with PS5 support 4K 120 Hz?
Sony recommends using the cable supplied with PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz. The TV input and any device between console and TV also need to support the signal.
Should I turn on Auto HDR for GTA 6?
Auto HDR is an Xbox feature that can apply HDR conversion to eligible SDR games; it is not the same as calibrating a game’s native HDR output. If troubleshooting an Xbox image problem, the official guidance includes temporarily disabling Auto HDR or HDR10 to isolate HDR-related causes.
