Short answer: X Money is the payment-account service associated with X; the available product information does not show Grok itself as a general-purpose way to pay bills or send money. ChatGPT Finances connects financial data so you can analyze and plan, but it cannot execute payments or move money. So the practical comparison is X Money for account and payment features versus ChatGPT Finances for financial insights—not two competing payment tools.

What “Grok payments” and “ChatGPT payments” mean

The wording can suggest that both AI assistants have built-in payment functions. The documented products are different. X describes X Money as an account with payment features, including bill payment and transfers to other X users. That does not establish that Grok is the interface for starting those transactions. A narrow exception is the Grok Bot template rewards pilot, whose terms mention X Money as a way eligible participants may receive rewards.

Finances in ChatGPT is a financial-data connection and analysis feature, not a payment account. OpenAI says it can help users understand, plan, and evaluate financial decisions, but cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, or make trades.

Features and availability

Feature X Money ChatGPT Finances
Primary role Financial account and payment features within X. Financial dashboards, summaries, and answers based on connected account and credit data.
Money movement Advertises direct deposit, bill payment, wires, mailed checks, instant payments to other X users, and an X Card. Cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, or make trades.
Availability stated by provider Rolling out to select users in the United States who are 18 or older. Available in the United States to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users on web, iOS, and Android, according to OpenAI’s Help Center.
Financial-data connection An X Money account; review its product terms and privacy details before opening or using one. Connects account data through Plaid and separate credit-report data through Experian.
Rewards or yield Advertises conditional APY, cashback, and ATM-fee reimbursements; eligibility and terms apply. The reviewed Finances documentation describes no yield or cashback offer.

OpenAI’s May 2026 launch announcement said Finances supported more than 12,000 financial institutions at launch; connections and availability may vary. The Help Center does not give a complete pricing comparison or identify a separate Finances feature fee. Plan eligibility is not the same thing as a statement that the feature or ChatGPT subscription has no cost.

X Money fees, rates, and account protections

Payments and card fees

X says users can send money instantly to other X users “free and with no limits,” and advertises bill pay, wires, checks, and direct deposits up to two days early. These are X’s product claims; the applicable account terms govern use. The X Card is described as accepted wherever Visa is accepted, with no foreign transaction fees. Premium and Premium+ subscribers are described as receiving unlimited ATM operator fee reimbursements; other users are reimbursed up to $4 per transaction for up to two transactions per month. See X Money’s product page for the terms.

APY and cashback are conditional

X states that its advertised 6.00% APY was accurate as of July 27, 2026, may change, and varies by subscription and jurisdiction. Premium+ users qualify for that rate; other users may qualify for a boosted 6.00% APY with qualifying direct deposits. New York residents do not receive APY, interest, or interest boosts on stored-value accounts.

The page also advertises up to 3% cashback on eligible X Card purchases for Premium and Premium+ users. Other users may qualify for boosted cashback up to 3% after at least $1,000 in qualifying deposits over a trailing 34-day period. Fees may affect earnings, and neither the yield nor cashback should be treated as guaranteed for every account.

Bank and FDIC coverage

X identifies Cross River Bank, Member FDIC, and participating insured banks in its cash-sweep explanation. It says funds are insured up to $250,000 at Cross River Bank and that the sweep program may provide up to $10 million in aggregate pass-through coverage across participating banks, subject to conditions. X Payments LLC is not an FDIC-insured bank; deposit insurance applies to the failure of an insured bank, not to X as a company. Check the account terms for how coverage applies to a particular account.

What ChatGPT Finances can access—and what it cannot do

When accounts are connected, OpenAI says Finances can access balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities. A separate Experian connection supplies credit-report data. OpenAI says it cannot see full account numbers or make changes to connected accounts, and it cannot initiate a payment or trade. The feature is designed to help interpret information, not act on it.

Useful questions include “Where did I spend the most money this month?”, “What subscriptions am I paying for?”, “What bills are coming up?”, and “Am I on pace to stay within my grocery budget?” Answers depend on the connected data available to ChatGPT, so they should be treated as analysis of that data rather than confirmation that an actual payment or account change has occurred.

Privacy and user controls

ChatGPT Finances

OpenAI says Finances follows the user’s general ChatGPT model-training settings. Users can disconnect accounts; OpenAI says synced account data is deleted from its systems within 30 days, and data associated with the ChatGPT connection is deleted from Plaid within 30 days under Plaid’s policies. Disconnecting does not remove financial information already present in conversation history. Financial memories are separate and can be viewed or deleted. OpenAI describes the feature and controls in its personal-finance announcement and Help Center.

Grok on X versus standalone Grok

“Grok privacy” depends on where you use it. SpaceXAI’s privacy policy covers its websites and apps; it says Grok use on X is governed by X’s privacy policy and terms. X’s Grok Help Center page describes controls to opt out of using Grok interactions, inputs, and results for model training and to disable personalization. Feedback and use of Grok-powered features on X can have separate effects. X says deleted conversation history is removed within 30 days unless retention is needed for security or legal reasons.

X Money transaction information

X Money’s product page says the account uses passkeys, custom transaction limits, and advanced privacy controls, but the reviewed page does not provide a detailed account of how transaction records are used, shared, or retained. Those security statements are not a complete transaction-data privacy policy. The available information therefore does not support a simple claim that one service is more private: the products collect and process different kinds of financial information, and their policies need to be assessed separately.

What about Visa payments in ChatGPT?

Do not confuse ChatGPT Finances with agent-initiated shopping. The Associated Press reported on June 10, 2026 that Visa had embedded its payment network in ChatGPT for agent-initiated purchases. The report said users could link Visa cards and that purchases could be made at merchants accepting Visa, but OpenAI and Visa did not disclose fees or financial terms for the collaboration. AP also reported that OpenAI retired Instant Checkout in March after merchants did not widely adopt it and found its merchant fee too high. This reporting describes a separate initiative, not a capability listed for the Finances dashboard; it does not establish broader current availability. Read the Associated Press report.

Which one fits your task?

  • To hold or move money: X Money is the product in this comparison that advertises an account and payment functions, subject to rollout, eligibility, and account terms.
  • To review spending or ask questions about connected finances: ChatGPT Finances is built for analysis and planning, not transaction execution.
  • To compare costs: X publishes conditional rates, rewards, reimbursements, and payment claims; the reviewed ChatGPT Finances page does not state a feature-specific fee or a full subscription-price comparison. There is not enough information here to calculate an all-in cost for either service.
  • To assess privacy: Decide which data and permissions matter to you, then review the relevant policies and controls. Grok on X and standalone Grok do not fall under the same policy description, while ChatGPT Finances uses Plaid for accounts and Experian for credit data.
