Grindr’s 2025 gAI rollout drew complaints from users who said AI use should require opt-in consent rather than default settings with an opt-out. The reporting documents that objection, but does not establish how many people received the notice or shared the criticism. Grindr says its AI-feature controls and AI-training choices are separate, so changing one setting may not change the other.
What Grindr announced—and what is confirmed
Grindr calls its proprietary AI technology “gAI” and describes it as generative AI and machine learning intended to personalize the app and help people connect. In its January 21, 2025 product roadmap, the company named six planned AI-driven products: chat summaries, A-List prompts, For You recommendations, a Discover tab, an Explore Heatmap, and Travel Pass. The roadmap marked the Heatmap as in development; a roadmap is not confirmation that every listed product launched.
Grindr’s September 16, 2025 privacy explanation, authored by Chief Product Officer AJ Balance, specifically describes A-List chat summaries and surfacing relevant chats. That page was updated September 20, 2026, so details on the current page should not automatically be treated as wording present in the original 2025 post.
Why the opt-out framing drew complaints
BetaNews reported on September 23, 2025, that users were encountering an in-app notice headed “AI for Personalization & Connection” and objecting to default AI use and the effort involved in opting out. The article embeds a September 18 post from user Sam Donovan: “This should be an opt in, not an opt out.” BetaNews characterized the main criticism as placing the burden on users to disable the feature.

That is evidence of reported complaints, not a representative measure of Grindr users’ views. BetaNews’s account draws on social-media posts and gives no count of people who saw the notice, no survey, and no denominator. It does not establish that all users were enrolled or that users overwhelmingly rejected AI.
Two separate choices: AI features and AI training
Grindr’s explanation distinguishes between using AI-powered features in the app and allowing personal information to train AI models. The company says users can disable AI-powered features in settings; opting out of training alone does not necessarily disable those features.

What Grindr says happens to messages and sensitive information
Grindr says messages may be processed to provide summaries or prompts when AI features are enabled, but message data is not used to train AI unless the user explicitly opts in. This distinction matters: not using messages for training does not mean messages are never processed to deliver an enabled feature.
The company also says sensitive health information—including HIV status, vaccine information, and poz tags—is not used for AI, advertising, or Grindr marketing. It says external AI providers are bound by data-processing agreements and cannot repurpose information for their own purposes. These are Grindr’s representations; its published explanation does not independently verify technical implementation or provider contracts.

What the earlier testing plan does—and does not—show
In a March 13, 2024 update, Grindr said new AI features would begin with internal testing and then controlled tests involving small groups of users who opted in. That describes the company’s intended testing approach at the time. It does not establish the consent flow used for the 2025 notice or prove how widely features were later made available.

What is still unknown
- How many Grindr users received the 2025 in-app notice, and how many chose to disable features or training.
- How common the objections reported by BetaNews were among users overall.
- Whether every product on the January 2025 roadmap subsequently launched, and its current availability.
- Whether the safeguards described by Grindr operate as stated in practice; the cited corporate explanation is not an independent audit.
