A cold frame is usually the better fit for a small garden, a modest budget, and hardy crops such as lettuce and kale. Choose a greenhouse when you need more space and height, want to overwinter larger or cold-sensitive plants, or need greater control over growing conditions. Either structure can extend the season, but neither guarantees frost-free growing: climate, sunlight, construction, crops, and daily ventilation all matter.

Cold frame vs. greenhouse at a glance

Decision Cold frame Greenhouse
Size and height Low profile with limited room; suited to beds, small crops, and seedling trays. More room and height for larger plants and a broader growing area.
Typical fit Cool-season crops, shoulder-season protection, and hardening off seedlings. Seedling production at greater scale, overwintering cold-intolerant plants, and specialized growing environments.
Setup and cost Generally the simpler, more affordable option; it can be built with salvaged materials. Costs and complexity vary; some designs need powered ventilation, heating or cooling, or supplemental lighting.
Temperature approach Passive solar warming and soil heat; the lid may need to be opened on sunny days and closed at night. Ventilation and other systems can offer more control, depending on the design and equipment.
Management Monitor conditions and vent the lid to prevent overheating. Manage ventilation to control heat and moisture; demanding crops may require active environmental management.

These structures are not interchangeable versions of the same thing. The University of Minnesota Extension defines a cold frame as “a shallow, unheated box with a transparent cover.” A greenhouse is a larger growing space, and it can support more equipment and a wider range of plants. University of Minnesota Extension; Washington State University Extension.

How much can each structure extend the season?

For cold frames, University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension gives a general estimate: spring planting may begin three to five weeks earlier, and fall growing may continue for a similar interval beyond the frost date. Treat that as guidance rather than a promise; results depend on local conditions and the frame’s design. University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension.

A University of Vermont Extension page estimates that cold-frame interior air may be 5 to 10 degrees warmer than outside air. The estimate is not tied to a universal design or weather condition, so it should not be used as a dependable temperature forecast. Neither that estimate nor the season-extension range establishes that a frame will keep a particular crop frost-free. University of Vermont Extension.

A greenhouse admits sunlight, which is converted to heat, but its transparent covering can also lose substantial heat because it is not a particularly good insulator. A greenhouse therefore does not automatically stay warm overnight; its performance depends on the structure, cover, weather, and whether supplemental systems are used. Washington State University Extension.

When a cold frame is the better choice

  • You have a small garden or want to protect a limited bed or a few trays rather than create a walk-in growing area.
  • Your main aim is to grow hardy, cool-season crops or protect seedlings while they adjust to outdoor conditions.
  • You prefer a lower-cost, relatively simple structure and are comfortable checking and adjusting its lid.

University of Minnesota Extension lists lettuce, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli among crops suited to cold-frame use, and describes the frame as useful for hardening off seedlings. A frame can be made from scrap lumber and an old window sash; a snug-fitting, hinged cover makes it possible to vent. An electric heating mat can provide bottom heat, but that changes the setup from an unheated cold frame to a heated bed. University of Minnesota Extension.

When a greenhouse is the better choice

  • You need enough height and floor area for larger plants or a broader growing operation.
  • You want to overwinter plants that are cold-intolerant, such as citrus.
  • You need to maintain specialized growing conditions or start seedlings at greater scale.

A greenhouse can be equipped with systems for powered ventilation, heating, cooling, or supplemental lighting, but those are possibilities rather than standard features in every home greenhouse. The equipment needed depends on the structure and growing goals. Washington State University Extension; Utah State University Extension.

Ventilation is essential for both

Cold frames

On sunny days, a closed cold frame can heat up excessively. Open or vent the lid as needed, then close it at night to protect plants. A hinged lid makes this routine easier; temperature-controlled openers are also an available category of accessory, though compatibility depends on the lid. Greenhouses

Ventilation exchanges indoor and outdoor air to control temperature, remove moisture, and replenish carbon dioxide. How much ventilation a greenhouse needs—and whether it is manual or powered—depends on the structure and its use. NC State Extension.

Choose by crop, space, and the work you can manage

  1. Start with the plants. For hardy greens and seedling hardening, a cold frame is often sufficient. For cold-sensitive plants, larger specimens, or specialized conditions, a greenhouse is the more suitable option.
  2. Match the structure to your space. A frame serves a bed or trays; a greenhouse provides more growing area and headroom.
  3. Decide how much infrastructure you want. A cold frame can be a simple salvaged-material project. A greenhouse may need equipment to meet particular temperature, light, or ventilation goals.
  4. Be realistic about daily care. Both structures need ventilation. If you cannot monitor a cold frame’s lid on sunny days, consider how you will manage that before planting.
  5. Use local frost dates as a planning guide, not a guarantee. The cited extension ranges are broad estimates; site conditions and crop tolerance affect actual planting and harvest dates.

If you are unsure how much protected space you need, starting with a cold frame is a lower-cost way to learn what your garden requires. Nebraska Extension describes it as the most affordable option for beginning growers. University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension.
