Start with Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) for a compact, self-contained introduction to Hal Jordan: it tells his origin and induction into the Green Lantern Corps. If you want a longer story, try Green Lantern: The Animated Series; for the live-action film, choose Green Lantern (2011). DC’s newer Lanterns pairs Hal Jordan and John Stewart, but no earlier screen adaptation is established as required viewing.
Choose a starting point by what you want to watch
- A quick introduction to Hal Jordan: Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) is an animated feature focused on Hal’s origin and entry into the Corps. JustWatch’s US viewing guide recommends it as a compact starting point. JustWatch’s Green Lantern guide.
- A longer animated adventure: Green Lantern: The Animated Series (2011–2013) follows Hal on the Guardian Frontier as he faces an invasion by the Red Lantern Corps. DC’s series page introduces its premise.
- A live-action film: Green Lantern (2011), starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, is the standalone live-action feature in the guide. Whether its approach suits you is a matter of taste; it is not a prerequisite for the other adaptations.
- The newer DCU pairing of Hal and John: Watch Lanterns when you want the series DC has described as featuring both characters. It is a distinct project, not a reason you must first watch older screen versions.
A practical Green Lantern watch order
There is no official cross-adaptation order that makes these titles one continuous story. The following release-order route is a convenient way to sample standalone Green Lantern adventures, not a canon sequence. The JustWatch list deliberately leaves out films and shows where a Lantern mainly appears as part of a team.

What to watch before Lanterns
Nothing in DC’s announcement establishes an older movie or series as required preparation for Lanterns. DC’s January 31, 2023 announcement of its interconnected universe described the series as part of the DCU and named Hal Jordan and John Stewart as its leads. It also distinguished shared-universe projects from DC projects outside that continuity, so the different screen versions should not be treated as chapters in a single story.

Peter Safran, DC co-chairman and CEO, described the series in that announcement as “more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two Lanterns.” That description signals a mystery-led approach; it does not establish that viewers need to know the earlier adaptations.
Optional viewing and reading for John Stewart
If you want to see John Stewart in a team setting, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited are optional additions rather than steps in the standalone order. GamesRadar recommends the Justice League Unlimited episodes “Hunter’s Moon” and “Far From Home” as optional viewing in its guide to what to watch before Lanterns.
Rank #2
For character history beyond the screen, DC points readers to Hal and John’s first meeting in Green Lantern #87 (1971), the modern Green Lantern: No Fear story arc, and Green Lantern: Earth One. DC explicitly says Lanterns is not an adaptation of Earth One; these comics are supplementary context, not required screen homework. See DC’s universe announcement.

Availability depends on country, service, and date. JustWatch’s US guide, updated September 25, 2026, reported checking services on October 4, 2026; at that point it listed five of its six titles through the HBO Max Amazon Channel and showed other titles on additional services. It also listed digital purchase and, for some entries, Blu-ray or DVD options. Those are dated US listings, not a guarantee of what is available now or in another region. Check a current listing for your country before subscribing or buying. The guide also lists DVD and Blu-ray options for the animated series for viewers who prefer physical media.
