GrapheneOS is an open-source mobile operating system built around privacy and security, with support for Android apps. It adds protections and controls the project says are designed to strengthen app isolation and limit access to data—but it is not risk-free, and installing it means checking phone compatibility and following the official process.

What is GrapheneOS?

GrapheneOS is a non-profit, open-source project focused on researching and developing privacy and security technology for mobile devices. Its stated work includes app sandboxing, exploit mitigations and permission controls. The project describes its goals and design on its official overview; those descriptions are not independent proof that it is categorically safer than every other mobile operating system.

GrapheneOS is based on Android and supports Android applications. It does not include Google Play services or another implementation of Google services by default. Users who need Google Play can install it through GrapheneOS’s compatibility layer, where Play services run as ordinary sandboxed apps rather than receiving the special system-level privileges they have on many Android installations.

What do its privacy and security features do?

GrapheneOS describes protections at several layers: strengthening boundaries that isolate apps, mitigating some classes of exploit, and giving users additional control over access to data and device functions. Its features documentation describes examples of how those aims translate into use.

Google Pixel 11 Pro - Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 256 GB - Obsidian
  • Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
  • Storage Scopes: lets a user provide an app with access to selected files instead of granting broad access to shared storage.
  • Auditor: supports hardware-based verification of a device’s integrity. It can help detect certain forms of compromise or unexpected changes; it does not guarantee that a device or every app is safe.
  • Location indicators: make location access visible to the user.
  • Encrypted backups: provide a way to back up data in encrypted form.
  • App disabling controls: let users disable apps they do not want available.

These controls can reduce exposure or make access easier to notice, but they do not eliminate vulnerabilities, unsafe app behavior, phishing, or risks caused by a compromised account or device.

How does GrapheneOS compare with ordinary Android security?

Android already has a substantial security foundation. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) describes app sandboxing that restricts applications, user-visible permission controls, and hardware security capabilities. Devices also receive security patches while their manufacturers continue supporting them. For some critical software libraries, Google Play services delivers security updates on devices that include Google Play. The details vary by device and configuration; AOSP’s security overview explains the platform-level protections and their scope.

Google Pixel 10a - 30+ Hours Battery, Camera Coach, Gemini - Obsidian 128GB
  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

So the useful comparison is not “GrapheneOS versus an unprotected Android.” It is whether GrapheneOS’s additional design choices and controls suit your needs, and whether the phone you would install it on remains supported. No operating system can compensate for a device that no longer receives security updates or for risky app and account practices.

Google has also announced new Android security and privacy features for Android 17, initially including official-OS verification on Pixel devices, a public append-only ledger for production Google applications, automatic hiding of OTP codes from most apps for three hours, a 2G toggle, and work on post-quantum cryptography. These are features in Google’s 2026 announcement; the announcement should not be read as confirmation that every feature is available on every device or in every region.

How does it compare with other privacy-focused Android options?

CalyxOS and /e/OS are other projects that describe privacy-oriented Android experiences. Their own descriptions are useful for understanding what they offer, but are not independent evaluations. Compare the specific device, app and update requirements that matter to you rather than treating “de-Googled” as a single set of protections.

Option What its project describes What to check before choosing
GrapheneOS Android app compatibility, security and privacy features, and optional sandboxed Google Play installation through a compatibility layer. GrapheneOS overview Whether your exact phone is currently supported, how long it will receive updates, and whether apps you rely on need Google services.
CalyxOS Verified Boot, microG, F-Droid and privacy-focused apps. CalyxOS project description Current device support, update support and whether microG meets the requirements of your apps.
/e/OS A de-Googled operating system integrated with selected apps and online services. The e Foundation’s description Current device and update support, included services, and compatibility with the apps you use.

Security architecture, permission controls, Google-service dependence, app compatibility, update support and installation effort are separate questions. A project’s feature list alone cannot tell you how well your particular phone will be supported or whether a specific banking, work or messaging app will function as expected.

Which phones support GrapheneOS?

Recent coverage describes GrapheneOS as designed for Pixel phones, but an exact, current model list and the remaining update-support periods are not established here. Do not buy a phone based on a general “Pixel compatible” claim. Check GrapheneOS’s official installation documentation for current device eligibility and follow its device-specific guidance before proceeding.

How do you install GrapheneOS?

GrapheneOS provides an official WebUSB installer, which the project recommends for most users, and a command-line installation guide for technical users. The project advises using its own installation methods because third-party instructions may be outdated or wrong. Read the current official guide first; it contains the prerequisites and device-specific steps.

  1. Confirm compatibility: use the current device information in the official installation guide before starting.
  2. Choose the official method: use the WebUSB installer if you want the project’s recommended route, or the command-line guide if you are comfortable with that process.
  3. Prepare for the change: review the guide’s requirements and make sure you have saved anything you need to keep before installing a different operating system.
  4. Follow the device-specific instructions: complete the official steps and use the project’s update guidance to maintain the installation.

Is GrapheneOS a good fit?

It may suit someone who wants additional security controls, prefers not to have Google services included by default, and is willing to verify device support and manage installation and updates. It may be a poor fit if the required phone is unsupported, a must-have app depends on Google services in a way the compatibility layer does not satisfy, or you are not prepared to maintain the device according to the project’s guidance. Check the specific apps and hardware first; “Android app compatible” does not guarantee that every Android app or service will work.
