A GPS data logger can record a route and let compatible software graph speed and elevation, but a graph made from a saved track is not necessarily a live, updating curve. Maximum elevation and maximum speed are also device-defined readings—often the highest recorded values since the last reset—not guaranteed measurements of true ground height or peak speed.

What a GPS data logger records

A logger records a series of position fixes over time. Its device or companion software may use those records to display a route, show speed and elevation, and calculate summary values. The logger’s recording interval and the software’s graphing features determine how much detail appears; the phrase “GPS data logger” alone does not establish either.

For example, the Renkforce GT-730FL-S manual has an “Altitude / Speed Graph” section, documenting graphing in its logger-and-software setup. That does not establish that the graph updates live during recording, that the software works with current operating systems, or that the product is currently available. See the Renkforce GT-730FL-S manual for the documented feature.

Live curve or graph after recording?

These are different capabilities. A post-trip graph is generated from recorded track data; a live curve or live map updates while an activity is underway. Check the product and app documentation for explicit support for live updates rather than assuming that any altitude or speed graph is real time.

Live location sharing is a separate feature from logging and graphing. Garmin LiveTrack, for instance, can share a participant’s current location and selected activity information with followers. It requires compatible equipment and connectivity; in many setups, the paired phone must accompany the activity and have a good cellular signal. If cellular service drops, followers may see the last known position until service returns. See Garmin’s LiveTrack support page for device and connectivity details. Garmin cautions: “LiveTrack location sharing with incident detection should NOT be relied on as a primary method to obtain emergency assistance.”

What “maximum height” and “maximum speed” mean

For GPS readings, “height” is better described as elevation or altitude: an estimate associated with the recorded position, not a surveyed measurement. A maximum is likewise a recorded field, and its meaning depends on the device and its reset behavior.

Garmin’s GPSMAP 67 manual lists “GPS Elevation,” “Elevation – Maximum,” “Speed,” and “Speed – Maximum.” It defines maximum elevation and maximum speed as the highest values reached since the last reset. This is a clear example of device-specific terminology, not a rule that every logger records those fields the same way. Consult the GPSMAP 67 owner’s manual for that model’s fields.

How accurate are recorded speed and elevation?

A plotted peak is not automatically ground truth. GPS.gov says user accuracy depends on satellite geometry, signal blockage, atmospheric conditions, and receiver design and quality. Those conditions affect speed accuracy too. Its stated signal-in-space global average user range rate error—≤0.006 m/sec over any 3-second interval, with 95% probability—is a measure of the government-provided signal, not a promise of consumer-device speed accuracy. See GPS.gov’s GPS accuracy explanation.

Garmin’s general guidance estimates consumer handheld GPS location accuracy at around 3 meters (10 feet), 95% of the time. That is not a universal guarantee for all loggers, routes, or vertical measurements, and it does not establish a logger’s altitude accuracy. Garmin also notes that recording positions while stationary without pausing can allow drift to accumulate into recorded distance. See Garmin’s GPS accuracy guidance.

Choosing a logger for speed and elevation graphs

Before buying, match the device and its software to the way you plan to use the data. A dedicated logger is a direct fit for recording tracks; a handheld GPS may add navigation and device-specific maximum fields; a Bluetooth receiver relies on a phone app for recording and visualization.

Using a Bluetooth GPS receiver with an app

An external Bluetooth receiver provides location data to a mobile device; it does not decide what the app records or graphs. Garmin says its GLO 2 pairing flow offers basic Garmin Explore functions such as viewing current location and saving waypoints, while Earthmate includes basic track recording. For more robust functions, Garmin recommends finding a third-party app that supports the needed features. Confirm the app’s graphing, maximum-value, export, and live-display functions before relying on a receiver-and-phone setup. See Garmin GLO support.
