GPS collars track the locations of tagged animals; camera traps record detections at fixed sites. Choose collars to study individual movement and space use, cameras to study which animals use particular places and when, and both when those distinct records answer linked questions. Neither method is a universal substitute for the other.
What does each method actually measure?
The key difference is the observation unit. A GPS collar produces repeated location fixes for an instrumented individual. A camera trap produces images or videos when an animal enters the camera’s detection zone. Those records support different inferences: a sequence of fixes can describe where a known animal went, while camera records describe detections at selected places.
That distinction matters when interpreting results. A camera array does not continuously follow an animal between sites, and a collar study samples only the animals that were captured, fitted with devices, and successfully tracked. Apparent absence or movement can also reflect how each method detects and records animals, not just what animals did.
How do the methods compare?
| Decision point | GPS collars | Camera traps |
|---|---|---|
| What is sampled | Repeated locations from tagged individuals | Detections at stationary sampling locations |
| Best fit | Individual movement, space use, routes, and movement-linked habitat use | Presence, occupancy, activity timing, species assemblages, and repeated site detections |
| Spatial coverage | Follows an instrumented animal beyond the deployment site, subject to device and data-retrieval limits | Samples the camera’s detection area; broader coverage requires a planned array |
| Handling | Requires capture and device attachment, with species-specific ethical planning | Collects images without capturing animals for device attachment; installation may disturb a site |
| Common limitations | Capture or attachment effects, device failure, missed fixes, location error, and sampling or analysis choices | Imperfect detection, placement and behavior effects, variable image performance, and identification limits |
| Work after deployment | Manage telemetry, assess location error and sampling, and handle device recovery or transmission | Maintain sites and equipment, manage batteries and memory, process images, and identify species |
| Decision question | Do you need tracks for known individuals? | Do you need repeated records from selected places or detections of multiple species? |
When are GPS collars the stronger choice?
Movement by identifiable individuals
Use collars when the outcome depends on trajectories through space and time: routes, individual space use, or habitat use linked to an animal’s movements. Fix frequency should match the scale of the behavior under study. A sparse series may miss short movements or routes, while frequent fixes create more data to manage and do not automatically make an inference stronger.

Movement estimates need validation
Fix rate, location error, canopy, terrain, and analysis choices can affect movement estimates. A 2017 evaluation by Ironside, Mattson, Arundel, and Hansen examined a Telonics GEN3 collar across 67 sites. In the conditions sampled, excluding two-dimensional fixes reduced mean location error by 10.95 meters but also discarded 54.50% of the data. Those results describe that collar and study conditions, not every device or landscape. They illustrate why automatic filtering can trade away substantial information and may bias which habitats remain represented.
Collar studies also depend on successful capture, attachment, and device performance. Costs or failures that reduce the number of animals tracked can weaken the study design; fine-scale data are useful only when the sample and analysis support the question.

When are camera traps the stronger choice?
Site use, timing, and multiple species
Choose cameras when the question concerns detections at places over time: which species use sites, when they appear, or how a community’s detections vary across locations. A camera network can observe multiple species without attaching a device to each animal. Camera-trap methods can support analyses of diversity, occupancy, density, abundance, behavior, and interspecies interactions, provided the analysis accounts for imperfect detection.
Placement defines what the camera can see
A camera samples only its detection area. Placement along trails or near resources may increase the chance of recording particular behaviors or species, but it also shapes the records collected. Trigger performance, image quality, animal size and behavior, and the ability to distinguish individuals or similar species all affect what can be inferred. Cameras may be less suitable for reliable individual identification, determining sex or breeding status, monitoring some small mammals or ectotherms, or collecting biological samples.

Interactions depend on sampling design
A 2024 comparison used simulated trajectories and a field trial in Doñana National Park to examine GPS telemetry, regular-grid cameras, and cameras placed at resources. Resource-focused cameras performed strongly for detecting direct interactions in simulations when the resource setup was feasible. Regular-grid cameras identified potential indirect interaction pairs but missed many direct interactions; GPS performed well when fixes were frequent, at a high number per hour. The authors’ findings depend on landscape and animals’ visits to resources, so they do not establish a general ranking.

Daily travel distance can be estimated in more than one way
Osinga and colleagues’ 2026 Movement Ecology study used simulated data and three empirical case studies. Under the study’s conditions, continuous-time movement models using adequately sampled, error-corrected GPS data produced daily travel-distance estimates comparable in magnitude to camera-trap estimates when camera activity and data-volume requirements were met. GPS straight-line displacement estimates were lower in the tested scenarios. This is a finding about particular data, methods, and outcomes—not evidence that the methods are interchangeable for all species, landscapes, or movement questions.

How should you choose a method?
- Define the quantity first. If you need individual tracks, routes, or space use, assess a collar design. If you need detections at sites, activity timing, or a multispecies record, assess a camera array.
- Set the scale and sampling plan. Specify species, habitat, spatial scale, and time interval. For collars, ask whether fix frequency and expected fix loss can resolve the behavior. For cameras, plan locations, repeat visits, and the detection area each station will sample.
- Include welfare and field constraints. A collar proposal needs justified capture and attachment procedures, species-specific planning, and appropriate oversight. A camera plan needs access for installation and maintenance, and enough capacity for image processing.
- Plan the analysis before deployment. Evaluate GPS location error and how filtering affects the usable sample. For cameras, account for imperfect detection and plan how images will be processed and species identified.
- Combine methods only for complementary questions. Use both when individual movement records and site-level detections each answer a necessary part of the study. Align their time periods where relevant, and analyze each method according to its distinct observation process.
